Will the Redskins Be Favored Again?
A year ago last week, I wrote this stupid blog post, asking whether the Redskins would be underdogs again in the 2008 season.
Stupid, because things change too quickly in the NFL. Just because Las Vegas Sports Consultants--the outfit that advises the majority of Nevada bookmakers on setting initial lines--had the Redskins ranked fourth in the League in early October didn't mean they would be in the same place in late December.
Well, I'm about to make the same mistake again. Except now, I'm wondering if the Redskins will ever be favored again.
According to the latest LVSC rankings, Washington is the 26th strongest bet in the NFL. After facing Kansas City--as something like a 6-point favorite--nine of Washington's final 10 games come against the top third of the League. Based on current rankings, the Skins would be underdogs in each of those nine games.
That leaves just Oakland. If you add in the three points for home field and assume the current rankings are gospel, the Skins would be two-to-three point favorites over the Raiders in Oakland. And that's about it.
Like I said, these rankings are certain to change. But still, wow. The current LVSC rankings:
1. N.Y. Giants, 142.2
2. Indianapolis,142.0
3. New Orleans, 141.7
4t. New England, 141.0
4t. Pittsburgh, 141.0
6. Philadelphia. 140.8
7. Minnesota, 140.5
8. Baltimore, 140.0
9. Atlanta,139.0
10. San Diego, 138.5
11. Dallas, 137.4
12. Denver, 137.0
13. N.Y. Jets, 136.9
14t. Green Bay, 136.4
14t. Chicago, 136.4
16t. San Francisco, 135.7
16t. Cincinnati, 135.7
18. Arizona, 135.6
19. Seattle, 134.4
20. Miami, 133.6
21. Tennessee, 133.5
22. Houston, 133.4
23. Jacksonville, 132.4
24. Buffalo, 131.2
25. Carolina, 130.8
26. Washington, 130.6
27. Cleveland, 128.5
28. Kansas City, 127.7
29. Detroit, 127.3
30. Tampa Bay, 126.8
31t. Oakland, 125.4
31t. St. Louis, 125.4

What does the number (142, 136) mean? How do they come up with it?

Skins will be favored against Oakland, KC, possibly Denver, and possibly Dallas (depending on if we beat the Giants the week before).
