Behavior Change: Group protest

I can't even count the number of e-mails I've gotten with proposals for how to really send a message to the Redskins' front-office, from group walk-outs to group boycotts to group backs-to-the-field to group marches. (Ok, I probably could count the e-mails, since I'm pretty good at counting, but I'm choosing not to.)

One particular proposal, though, I've received way more than any other, so I'll link it here. This enterprising soul has plotted a way for tens of thousands of Redskins fans to create a massive sign with some advice for the front-office, based only on the color of the shirt they wear. The specific advice can be seen above. The full explanation is at the Fire Snyder Sign blog. And the amount of coordination required could probably solve several incurable diseases if properly harnessed, but it's still an impressive idea.

And yes, I realize I'm opening myself up for more comments telling me to stop already, but the Redskins' implosion is a thoroughly national story, and there are many links I haven't yet linked.

* The Skins were discussed again on Sunday's CBS pre-game show (more on that later), and as The Great Dave McKenna noted last week, "By now, all that's left is for Highlights to crush Snyder, and then every magazine on the rack, and every magazine off the rack, will have crushed him."

And wouldn't you know it, that was before Rolling Stone had unloaded. Matt Taibbi had about 15 or 20 whacks at the Snyder pinata in the latest issue; while there's no online link and lots of dirty language, here are some quotes from a story headlined "How to Wreck a Team."

"In typical Washington spirit, he spent a decade throwing gazillions at perpetual failure and this year attacked a crisis of his own making (in his case, an NFL team that couldn't score 17 points against a 145-pound-and-under Pop Warner club) with the same policies that got him there: big-ticket free agents, bad coaching hires and enough neurotic meddling to make George Steinbrenner look like the Dalai Lama."

"His performance this year has been a tour de force of executive [badwordery], solidifying his status as the very worst owner not just in football but in sports."

"He looks like a cross between Mitt Romney and a male nurse, with a spray-helmeted cube of black mannequin hair atop the pinched, entitled face of a guy [complaining to] a Howard Johnson's waitress about his curly fries not being curly enough."

"The players, for all the money he throws at them, look like they wouldn't touch him with a two-foot Whizzinator."

And so on. The conclusion is that at least Al Davis is old, and that D.C. fans don't even have that going for them. It's pretty upbeat, all in all.

* This is an excellent cartoon about the sign ban in the Fredericksburg Free-Lance Star.

* Via McKenna, Bob Franken also uses the current climate to unload on Snyder, and to compare him to other American anti-heroes, calling him

A symbol for all the management fat cats who have also run our entire economy into the ground and actually added to the wealth in the process, while most of us have seen the bottom fall out. He is not only in the NFL, but in a league with mortgage bankers, health insurers and all the other Snidely Whiplashes of modern America.

Read the full thing at Huff Post. It gets even more cheerful.

* Rumors and Rants dubs the Skins the "[badwordiest] franchise in North America."

* Kissing Suzy Kolber offers a surprisingly non-profane look at the sign ban.

* Dark comic of the Revolution Danny Rouhier starts a campaign for fans to pay for a new lineman, seen below.

* And in the spirit of fairness, David Donovan reached out to a blogger and helped earn some positive goodwill. Read it at Hogs Haven.

* Also, I finally got one (1) e-mail from a fan who said that sometimes at games, his view is blocked by signs, which are annoying to him. But he went on to say that he didn't like the way the team imposed the sign ban. Still waiting to hear from anyone who has been poked in the head by poster board.

* Oh, and I keep forgetting to link to the team's Web archived stadium policies, which show pretty clearly that the old policy was disappeared, in case anyone had doubts on that score.

Steinberg, listen closely: STOP WITH THE DAMN APOLOGIZING...Blast his a$s until he submits.

'Ill Doouche' deserves all the fire he's getting and then some. I got a pix of him in a russian fur hat with an AK being referred to as 'Great Leader, the guy from Bang Cartoons has 4 cartoons roasting $nyder with one showing him as a midget Caesar and another as a midget Generalissimo. I LMAO...

I can't get enough of the 'troll bashing' because this donkey has ruined the team my Pops (RIP Ol man) loved and raised me to love.

When you've been a fan from the George Allen/Larry Brown/Kenny Houston/Pat Fischer/Charlie Taylor/Sonny and Billy days, when you watched Danny Buggs and his go everywhichaway legs (lol), when you saw DT Eric Williams play on one leg until Tim Johnson made him get off the field, when you saw Gary Clark with purple bruised hamstrings who got killed going over the middle EVERY week, when you remember Okie and Manusky and Bacon and poor Bobby Wilson and that horrible back injury, when you've been thru all the ups and downs and lived and died with this team, you can't help but have anything but venom for this jacka$s who only cares about money.

Keep lighting his shortas$ UP!!!

I really wish the sign ban wasn't in effect because the Redskins-Broncos game at home on Nov. 15 on CBS presents a prime opportunity for some hero to get airplay on a sign reading:

another idea, seeing as how this is really tough to coordinate. assign someone to each section, have them bring construction paper in the colors needed for the section. then you just hand them out to the right seats. that way you are relying on 15 people, not 15000 people. everyone holds up their paper, message delievered

Lock Out Stadium, block doorways, roads, shutdown sales with total boycott, hand out flyers showing HOW the dollar is inflated in sales, concessions, spin offs, and how municipalities suffer from lack of revenue being routed into improvements for fans and surrounding area.

Show the sales divide in the dollar spent and the peformance of the "prodcut" on the field, in spite of assertions of that ROSTER space is properly taken. Yeah right.

Same as before fellas, score 17 and find a way to lose by more, even if you have to additional fumbles, penalties, brain #arts on all levels, to include blowing HUGE plays, huge coaching decisions, stalling drives with dumb calls and plays and players that blow.....

Aint nothin' changed!

Leave this team a wreath, its dead, no matter what they "flash you" for ticket sales, merchandise and getting involved in their personal goals.

Leave them and wait until a REAL owner shows, a REAL GM shows, at least 30 players to replace the sluffoffs, to help the ones that want to play, hard, and get results, in the end zone, not the zone ended and some ja bs excuse by a slow thinking Auburn QB who was GREAT in college, average at best in the NFL and has to stroke the ball before delivery. Seems to be very good at that.

We have to keep the pressure on. There are more of us (as in fans) as there are of them (as in Dan and Vinny). This is a Redskins nation and we love(d) our Redskins until Danny Boy came along with his pot of gold and ruined our team and their reputation. This is truly disturbing to us diehard fans. We are embarrassed to wear our Redskins Jerseys out in public now because we have become the laughing stock of the NFL. Seriously, the sports commentators are awaiting the next episode of the Redskins Follies. It's way beyond time for us to be fed up, this is the season to take action and demand our team back.

So a couple of years ago when the San Diego Chargers are dead set on replacing Drew Brees with Philip Rivers as their quarterback of the future, they play Brees on the last game of the year even though he was hurt and did he have a heck of a game. Brees was an unrestricted free agent and could of been had very cheaply due to his potentially career ending injury. I don't understand the mentality of todays GM's on draft day that look for the prototypical quarterback by todays standards. Great arm strength, 6'-4" and at least 225 lbs. Lets take for a moment and look at the past Superbowl winning quarterbacks sizes over the last 10 years and it will show them to be on average of 6'-1" and right around 200lbs. Going back even further they are about 6'-0" or even under and weigh in at less than 200lbs. So I don't understand why the Redskins given the opportunity to at least bring him in for a workout seeing how they had at the time the aging Mark Brunell and The Wonderboy Jason Campbell. So last year they draft Chase Daniel out of Missouri and really never give him a shot at competing and release him. Guess where he is now. He is the backup quarterback to Drew Brees in New Orlean. Vinny Cerrato is a complete moron and if he is not gone next year I know lots of Redskin fans will be.

Why are you being defensive about attacking Snyder? The only thing you and the rest of the media should be defensive about is why you didn't pull the curtain away from King Danny long ago. What we see happening is simply the culmination of all the same bad decisions and mistakes piling up over ten years. Without dramatic change, the general direction of this organization will never change. I gave up my season tickets two years ago. I'm amazed so many continue to pay for this charade.

This is getting old......
Sorry....I don't understand how any real redskins fans didn't see this kind of season coming.......

Everyone jumps on the bandwagon....what happened to the free thinkers??

We knew that Zorn would have a 2 year stint tops....We knew the OL was 50/50....we knew Campbell needed to take the next step...and we knew the aging Gibbs 2.0 Roster needed to continue the purge that began when Williams wasn't hired.

The defense is better than the record we will have at the end of the season......This team could not be rebuilt in a single year. The DL was focused on this year.....OL is next year....probably QB too at this rate.
Bunch of crybabies IMO.

Protest won't work:

1) All those McDonalds workers in the upper deck don't have high speed Internet - they'll never get the word.

2) New dress code at FedUpField. Everyone must wear authorized Redskin merchandise - burgundy jerseys with gold lettering - anything but number 56 (banned).

Snyder has doubled the value of the Redskins since he bought the team. Isn't that what a business owner is supposed to do?

It does not matter if the Redskins win or lose, Snyder wins.

Get a blank shirt and a magic marker. Now, obviously if you wrtie "FIRE SNYDER" on your shirt the gestapo will throw you out. So, just put on your shirt - FI, RE, SN, YD, or ER.

Now, if you go to the game in a group of 5 you're all set. Otherwise, make new friends and get together for TV. The cameras will find you.

Stein,

As long as the Snerratto Virus exists, we need to work to innoculate it.

STOP APOLOGIZING! KEEP THE PRESSURE ON!

I'm going to be at the Wizards/Heat game on Wednesday, and I want to bring an anti-Snyder sign to that venue.

Me and 5 other friends are going to be at the Skins game in Atlanta and are planning on taking in a sign blasting Snyder/Vinny. Ideally, we'd like to use the letters FOX to increase our chances of getting it on TV but would consider other options too. Any suggestions?

Posted by: varmau | November 3, 2009 9:32 AM | Report abuse

I think the Fredericksburg cartoon linked to in the article is the breath of fresh air we all needed.

I doubt Mr Snyder reads any of the stuff written by the media or the fans but I hope someone shows him that cartoon.

Everyone needs to take a breather .. back away from the ledge and move forward. That would include Mr Snyder not only rescinding the sign but maybe encouraging it .. stage a little contest, show the signs on the screen during breaks and in return? the fans behave themselves with what they write.

At some point fans and owners are tied together. If Mr Snyder is getting any advice I hope it's to cut the BS are remember at the end of the day who pays the bills.

Re: David Donovan

It's nice of him to try to go around and put out the fires that Danny starts. I'm sure he's being well compensated for his efforts.

In the spirit of "fairness", here are a couple of things he needs to consider:

1) No one is buying his crap about the "sign policy". It's a neat lawyer trick to point to a "policy" that wasn't in place or hasn't been enforced and use it to justify an arbitrary decision. When is he going to be prepared to address the issue honestly?

2) I've often heard Donovan blame the atrocious treatment of fans on some kind of rogue employees.
-forcing fans to take off shirts critical of Snyder was done by "overzealous" security
-tix agents shafting fans to sell to other tix brokers weren't following policy
-tiz agents threatening fans to pay or get sued were out of line with their authority

With all these "rogue" employees running around the joint, Donovan should be grilled about the leadership culture around the Redskins. Are they adequately training their staff? Are they not being clear about the policies of the Skins/duties of their employees when they train them? Is there an overall lack of accountability?

time for a boycott! black t-shirts, stop buying merchandise, sell tickets to opposing fans, picket lines, signs outside FedEx(DeadEx), blogs, emails, petitions. I think all of it are great ideas! LET'S KEEP IT UP!

Add a little blurb like "Danny Sell the Team" or "Fire Vinny" at the end.

The fact that the sign is on display in someone else's stadium and not in our own should help the message.

Also can't imagine FedEx liking the idea of having their name splashed that way...which is a good thing.

The time has come for the Washington Redskins' fans to take back the team from its incompetent owner, Daniel Snyder.

Collectively, we, the lifelong fans of the Washington Redskins are upset, angry and quite frankly embarrassed at how Dan Snyder has systematically destroyed one of the most revered, successful and valuable franchises in all of sports.

Unfortunately, he will never sell the team, but that doesn't mean we as fans cannot influence his decision making by hitting him where it hurts: his pocketbook.

Here's how we can do this:

Let's boycott Papa John. Their toppings for TDs has become a complete joke.

Go to their Feedback URL and let them know that they're being boycotted.

Here are my comments in the Papa John boycott.

While I have enjoyed your products in the past, I am respectfully boycotting your store at not only Fedex Field but all stores because as a loyal Redskin fan I am tired of being emotionally and physically abused by Mr. Daniel Snyder. He has turned your promotion of Toppings for Touchdowns into a sad joke.
