For D.C. sports, 26 = sign of the devil

(By Mark Finkenstaedt for The Post)

As of this writing.....

The Redskins record is 2-6

The Wizards record is also 2-6

Clinton Portis wears No. 26. He's concussed, and likely out for the week.

D.C. United's Bryan Namoff wears No. 26. He missed the final month of the season with a concussion of his own.

Add 2 and 6, and you get 8. That's Alex Ovechkin. He's been injured for more than a week, and still isn't playing.

Subtract 2 from 6, and you get 4. That's Antawn Jamison. He's missed the entire regular season thus far, and still isn't playing.

In recent weeks, the Redskins have lost Hunter Smith (3), Chris Cooley (47) and Chris Horton (48), who was just placed on injured reserve, ending his season. Let's see, 3 plus 4 plus 7 plus 4 plus 8....yup, 26.

The latest Wizard to get hurt was Randy Foye, in Tuesday's loss to the Heat. Just before the season started, Foye celebrated his 26th birthday.

The Redskins' glory years started in 1983. That's the year they won their first Super Bowl, giving John Riggins the MVP trophy that helps make his voice still relevant all these years later. Or, to be exact, 26 years later.

The most recent championship won by a D.C. team in a Big-4 sport was the Redskins' victory over the Bills. That was Super Bowl XXVI, which translates to 26.

These, though, are not the glory years. I just got the latest NFL ratings from Las Vegas Sports Consultants, those advisers to the Nevada books. They have the Redskins ranked 26th in the league.

As I've often noted, the Redskins have the second-longest drought between 30 point games in the NFL, behind only the Lions. How long has it been since the Skins reached 30? Twenty-six games.

When Manny Acta was fired this year, his Nationals had 61 losses. And just 26 wins.

Or how about 2/6, as in February 6th? That was the date when Steve Spagnuolo left town two years ago, after hours of unsuccessful meetings with owner Daniel Snyder, leading to the Reign of Zorn.

Or the most recent 2/6, as in February 6th, 2009. The Wizards got destroyed at home by the Nuggets, and were booed repeatedly as fans did the wave almost as a mocking gesture of frustration. "It was embarrassing," Antawn Jamison said that day. "Honestly, I thought some of my guys were scared to be out there playing tonight. What are you supposed to do?"

Gilbert Arenas's $111 million salary has not exactly worked out thus far for the Wizards. I mean, $111 over six years...that's a lot of money. Works out to something like, let's see, $226,000 a game.

And then there's Teddy's uniform number, seen above. That's not good.

I'm sure I'm missing some, too. And I'm not quite sure how Shaone Morrisonn fits into all of this.

(One bit of good news: if the Caps win on Wednesday night, they'll move into the top spot in the Eastern Conference, with 26 points.)

This season reminds me so much of another Redskins season that began with high hopes in the offseason after spending lots of money. Both seasons were derailed after key injuries. Both seasons we were 2-2, then 2-5 both years, then a bye in week 8 both years.

This season just reminds me so much of the 2K6 season.

Probably because it's the same roster, and the same exact people keep getting injured. Everyone seemed to see it coming except for Vinny Cerrato, Dan Snyder, and possibly yourself.

So the Caps win 5-4 last night from the stick of Chris Clark (jersey number 17). 9+17=26?

Posted by: Section117 | November 12, 2009 8:06 AM | Report abuse

Caps have 26 points, but only until tomorrow at about 9:45...by then, they should have 28 points after answering the Call of the Wild and silencing it 6-2... which would be 2-6 backwards....

You know Dan, (2*6)-(6/2)*(2/6) = 11, as in the Atlantic 11, which is something you could be putting your time into that would be more productive than this bog entry.

26-(2*6)-(6/2) = 11 too! It's written in the numbers, Dan! College basketball season is here!

Plenty of people thought this was a good team going into this season. The over/under on the number of wins in Vegas was 8.5 -120...meaning it was closer to 9 than 8.

Very, very few people expected this team to be 2-6. So, please do us all a favor and don't try to re-write history here guy.
