Shannon Sharpe wears a bag head for the Skins

Sure is tough to go more than a day or so without a Redskins story involving one of the team's supposed potential hires. Monday, it was Mike Holmgren, lashing out at the Redskins' treatment of Jim Zorn. Sunday, it was Bill Cowher, sitting there and grinning while his "NFL Today" cohorts ridiculed Skins' leadership and said they would never be able to attract a big-time head coach.

This was during the pre-game segment featuring a fan poll; the transcript comes courtesy CBS Sports, and the image comes via @SaleemtheDream.

James Brown: Redskins VP Vinny Cerrato said he gave head coach Jim Zorn a roster worthy of making the playoffs. If that's true, the real problem in Washington is: A) the owner; B) the head coach; C) the quarterback; or D) the players.

Dan Marino: It's the owner. It's the front office. You think there is no stability there in that organization because they've had six different coaches in the last 10 years. When you think of the Washington Redskins and winning football, you have to have stability. So I say it's the front office.

Shannon Sharpe: You can't have signs at FedEx Field. I'm not in FedEx Field so I brought my bag and my sign...I read the Redskins' roster that Vinny Cerrato handed Jim Zorn. It had Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne - oh, that's Indy's roster. You didn't hand him a playoff roster. I read it, and it's not.

Marino: Because of how they've handled this over the years, they're never really going to have the chance to get a big-time coach, a big-time coach, to really commit there.

Sharpe: This is why I'm saying, read my sign.

Brown: Dan Snyder will spend money because he does want to win. We'll see what happens. Sixty-five percent of the viewers say it's the owner.

Notable in this transcript is the lack of "Cowher:" It would seem odd for the guys sitting next to him to lobby him away from that job if they thought he had much of an interest, and The Great Dave McKenna says this is a sign that Cowher ain't coming here. I still say if the check's big enough, anyone would come, but I guess we have nine more weeks to debate that one.

I didn't think the Skins were ever going to get Cowher. He's comfortable waiting until John Fox gets canned in Carolina (where Cowher lives, and his daughter is going to college)...and then taking the Panthers gig.

At what point does this message make it through to Dan Snyder and alter the way he perceives himself and his actions?

Whether or not they can attract a big-time coach is irrelevant.

The relevant issue is Vinny Cerrato's presence at Redskins park.

As long as Vinny is there influencing the decisions and whispering into Danny's ear on any level, the team has no hope to contend.

why did cerrato take so long to say that zorn would be here for the rest of the season and hopefully for a long time? because they tried getting one of those big-names un-employed/retired coaches and they all said no. the only ones willing to coach the skins are already skins' coaches.

Okay so I'm wondering why Dan Snyder hasn't addressed the media. He's getting all this negative attention, you would think he would come out and make some sort of statement. If he's paying attention, he will do the right thing and fire Vinny, get a real football GM and step aside and let that person run the show. This isn't going away. When you lose to mediocre teams and can only expect to win maybe one more game (2-14 or 3-13) and you've been through 6 coaches in 10 years (including a Superbowl Coach)-- IT'S THE MANAGEMENT!!! LISTEN TO US DAN --- WE WANT ACTION NOW --- SPEAK TO US -- STOP HIDING -- IF WE'RE STUCK WITH YOU -- YOU MUST FIRE VINNY NOW AND GET RID OF THE NON-PERFORMING PLAYERS. GET SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY TO WIN, NOT PLAY TO CASH A PAYCHECK!!! EVEN THOUGH YOU BOUGHT THIS TEAM, IT IS STILL "THE FANS" TEAM.

If you're getting pwned by Shanon Sharpe, it's time to take a good, long look at yourself.

Why is no one mentioning Joe Bugel as a possible candidate?

Well, what makes Sharpe spoof Cowher? Are they spoofing Cowher with other jobs? I'm actually encouraged that this means Cowher's considering DC. There are direct, fast flights to Raleigh from DC, and driving's only a couple hours farther than Charlotte. This whole, "Daughter's at NCSU; Cowher goes to the Panthers," line is grossly overdone. Atlanta, DC, even Jacksonville aren't that far away from his Raleigh home.

The take away is that Cowher's down to two -- Zorn or Fox's job.

Good news everyone.

I have done my "math" I think that if we can keep the hate of Dan Snyder up through the next two and a half seasons then we will see him sell the team. I think that if it keeps up through this season his ego will be worn down a lot, but it will take a year of him being miserable in the owners booth *next season for him to really question everything about his life. Then if it continues through another year he will give up.

What this means?

Fans need to continue to get in the Snyder Sux/ Sell the team chants every game.

Even if its only 30-40 of you gathering under the owners box. Every game. Good news on this is we only have 8 home games a season, if we can just keep it up for 16 more home games that should do it.

Fans need to continue to hammer away.

Why do people want Cowher/Gruden/Holmgren or whoever else to come here?

How many coaches have won Super Bowls with two different teams? None.

Why must it always be repeated as a mantra "Dan Snyder spends money therefore he wants to win", as if that somehow softens the ten years of incompetence?

I'm pretty sure that every team owner would prefer "winning" over "losing" and spends close to the same amounts on players in a salary capped league. Because Dan over spends on a few players and builds an offensive line through scraps, does that mean he wants to win more than everyone else?

the thing about snyder is that he's taken the patience of people WAY,WAY TO FAR....IT'S BEEN COMPLETE MADNESS AND INSANITY, YELLING AT COACHES, HIRING AND FIRING, LAVAR, LAVERNEUS COLES, GIBBS ETC....WE'VE TRADED AWAY TO MANNY DRAFT PICKS AND LET TO MANNY GO
A. 3RD ROUNDER FOR BRUNELL
B. 2ND ROUNDER IN CHAMP BAILY FOR PORTIS TRADE.
C.2ND ROUNDER FOR JASON TAYLOR
D. 3RD ROUNDER IN 07' DRAFT TO MOVE UP AND TAKE ROCKY MCINTOSH IN 06'....
E. 2006 FIRST ROUNDER TO DENVER TO TAKE JASON CAMPBELL IN O5' WHEN WE HAD PATRICK RAMSEY WHO JUST NEEDED A LINE, CASE AND POINT WE SPENT A 1ST ROUNDER ON HIM IN O2'...THAT'S ALOT OF BAD DRAFTING, ALOT....WHAT IF ALL THAT HAD BEEN SPENT ON GIVING RAMSEY A DESCENT O-LINE? HE'D HAVE PAYTON MANNING NUMBERS....AND WE'D STILL HAVE THE DEFENSE WE HAVE.....SNYDER...YOU HAVE PATCHED UP THE LEAKEY BOAT WITH MILLION DOLLAR PATCHES ENOUGH, IT'S SINKING REGARDLESS......TIME TO GET A NEW ONE.....YOU ARE NOT A BOAT BUILDER NOR IS VINNY.....GET SOMEONE THAT IS AND STOP DISTRACTING HIM.....JUST GROW UP.

Actually, I think Shannon looks better with the bag on.

Bill Cowher, maybe: but not as coach. Now, as a GM with real control and the right to pick his own head coach, that "maybe" becomes "I might be interested."

And GM would be a career advance for Scowlin' Bill.

Danny. Are you reading this?

I CAN TELL YOU THIS HOWEVER....YOU CAN'T PUT ALL THE BLAME ON VINNY....I DON'T KNOW IF HE'S HAD ANY CHOICES IN ANY MATTERS...CASE AND POINT....ZORN WAS HIS GUY...FROM WHAT WE HEAR....WHY WOULD HE TAKE PLAYCALLING AWAY FROM ZORN? HE PROBABLY WAS AGAINST IT....WHY? ZORN WAS HIS HIRE....IT WAS SNYDER.....HONESTLY I WISH VINNY AND ZORN WELL, VINNY HAS BEEN SNYDERS FALL GUY FOR TOO LONG....DO YOU REALLY THINK VINNY WANTED TO TRADE A 2ND ROUNDER TO MIAMI FOR JASON TAYLOR? NO WAY...NOBODY HAS HAD A CHANCE TO DO ANYTHING UNDER SNYDER EXCEPT FOR GIBBS....AND HE'S GONE....I HOPE ZORN AND VINNY GET SOME WINS AND MAKE THE NAPOLEAN OF THE NFL DO SOME REFLECTING.

Don't go to the game. If you must, don't buy anything and wear black and chant 'vinny must go', and alternate that with 'sell the team'

Vinny Cerato is the new Matt Millen....guess that makes us the new Lions and we all know that fate. WAKE UP DANNY!!!!

Do you really think Snyder is going to sell his team? Do you really think he cares what you think? He realizes that most of you on the sell the team bandwagon dont have season ticket. I suppose if you have a couple of neighbors in your neighborhood who dont like you, you will sell your house. How about quitting your job because a few people in the office dont like you. Would you sell your football team? Name one owner who sold their team because of fan discontent? One.. Please stop it with this silly wast of internet space and time.

Vinny's problem is not his draft choices, his problem is he cant make his own choices, he has to make choices that snyder approves of. Snyder is a Jerry Jones with less football knowledge but equal regarding ego. You think that was vinny who singed a washed up Deion Sanders? Everyone knew Deion was done when he came here. We saw that with the cowboys and they let him go. Snyder wanted to sell tickets to fans by adding star names. Do you really think Vinny went after Adam Archeletta? That has Snyder all over it. Snyder like to sell the team to fans by using big names. If its a name we know you can bet snyder will sign him just to give fans hope so they will continue to invest interest only to find out these big names are done. Sean Alexander anyone? This guy runs the skins like a car dealership. Trying to bait us in with sale tactics.

Who do you think fired Marty, got rid of Brad Johnson, replaced him with Jeff George and hired Steve Spurrier? That wasnt Vinny that was snyder. All those names make the skins sound more exciting to fans. Brad was boring with a soft arm, replace him with Jeff George. Marty was a defensive guy with a conservative offense. Replace him with spurrier. Those are moves that a fan would make, not a football guy. I think Vinny may not be the best personnel guy we have ever seen but you know he knows a washed up player when he sees one. He does have enough football experience to grade that. Snyder sees a big name out there and he tells vinny to go after him. Vinny cant refuse him. Thats the problem. Someone needs to stand up to him but dont expect Vinny to do it because the one way to see Vinny get fired by snyder is by him standing up to him and not doing what he wants. Thats when you will see Vinny gone.

That's hilarious! I guess with the job, he can hire a good psychotherapist!

It's actually quite sad. I liked Stabler.

Please People, get visions of sugar plums out of your head. Bll Cowher or any other coach of significance are NOT coming to Washington and work for snyder. He has what Sid Thrift once said about Peter Angelo when it was obvious he was the problem. That being is Snyder has "confederate money" Any coach/football guy that has a shred of self respect and belief in his ability will not take a job for this failure of an owner. "DO NOT KID YOURSELF ANY LONGER" . They already well know what we are now spewing everyday. That Snyder is not a guy that you would risk your reputation on in spite of all the millions more that he can pay you. We really are stuck here. Any top notch GM won't work for this creep of an owner and any up and coming GM that can be identified won't be given the keys to drive the car like it needs to be because our owner would never trust his and his judement alone. Same with a coach. Our only hope is that we can get the next great coach desperate enough for a head job(Zorn) that they are willing to try and work with what they are given. The problem with that scenerio is always there....that being the people they are working for are playing musical chairs and again, any real football guy wants stability in his front office, not clowns trying so hard to fix(spin) every problem that they always kill a nat with a sledgehammer. A perfect example of what I am saying is spags, the rams coach. We wait for this guy(the new it hire) to finish the playoffs and he turns us down and then takes the Rams job. THE RAMS! Obviously their situation seemed like a better atmosphere/situation for him to succeed then the redskins did. . ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW RIGHT THERE! The only way you see improvement is if Vinny is fired, not reassigned where he still can get next to the owner underscoring the next coach, but FIRED. I say if vinny is fired, we might have half a chance. Thats it!
