Sonny on Vinny: "He is tied to this thing"

(By Toni L. Sandys - TWP)

Aside from keeping an eye on a few of the Redskins' younger prospects, the next eight weeks are about the future of the front office. There aren't too many people who could plausibly know what will actually happen, but there's nothing better to do than search for clues, while sitting in the Atlanta airport amid the wafting and sweetly mixing odors of Checkers and Mandarin Express.

So, here's one clue, via certified insider Sonny Jurgensen. Sonny called into ESPN 980's Monday Morning Quarterback Show for his regular spot with Andy Pollin and Kevin Sheehan, and had some pointed words about Executive Vice President of Wide Receiver Procurement, Offensive Line Weight Loss and Radio Posturing Vinny Cerrato.

"Sonny, on the pregame show yesterday with me, you said something that I've never heard you say as definitively as you said it yesterday," Sheehan began. "You in essence said that this whole mess is really on Vinny's watch, that Vinny Cerrato's been making the decisions ever since he got the title promotion, that the decisions have been his and basically his alone. Will you sort of describe that a little bit more this morning?"

"You know, I think Joe Gibbs and Dan Snyder felt that Vinny had earned the opportunity to lead this football team, and they gave him that," Jurgensen said. "And Gibbs agreed with Snyder. And they gave him the opportunity to make the decisions. And I think, from my understanding, it was his decision to bring in another set of eyes, it was his decision to have [Sherm Lewis] call the plays, and I think these have been his decisions. He's living and dying by the success of this football team. He's tied to it. And he realizes that. And I think he would tell you that. You know, it's got to be successful for him to be here and continue in this position."

Well, it hasn't been successful. And if Sonny's understanding of things is correct, a lot of Redskins fans are now very, very happy. Pollin followed up, asking Jurgensen to assume for a minute that the Redskins win two more games and finish 4-12, which is about the right over-under at this point. In that scenario, he asked, "Can you pretty much confidently say that he's gone?"

"Yeah, I would think so, I would think so," Jurgensen said, as many listeners heard the sounds of heavenly chimes and angels singing HTTR. "I like Vinny, I don't want to....This is what is going to happen, I think. I think it's obvious that we've fired six or seven coaches, we've given him an opportunity. That's not to say Vinny wouldn't be here, but they could give Vinny something else."

Something else, huh. Care to explain?

"He may be getting the buses ready, I don't know," Jurgensen said, to laughter. "Look, he has a background in radio; he could always take over the radio station."

I think the one thing you don't want to become is a joke, and when you've become Sonny Jurgensen's punch line ... well, that doesn't strike me as a great career development. When Sheehan pressed Sonny about just who's been making the decisions, he sort of backed away from the claim that Cerrato was the real power in the organization, but he didn't back away from the larger point.

"I know what I have been told, I know what is supposed to be the situation, and the situation is that these are Vinny's calls," Jurgensen said. "I'm saying that he is tied to this thing, and it's got to happen. His experiment with Sherm Lewis has got to be successful."

Eight more weeks to find out.

Well, if things don't work out, he can always join Matt Millen as a TV analyst. He seems to have an almost identical resume...

Cerrato has succeeded in one thing.

He's made Matt Millen look like a genius.

Cerrato has as much decision-making authority on the draft and trades as I do. There's a reason that talented coaches such as Jim Spagnolo [sp?] had no interest in working for Dan Snyder, the evil midget.

Posted by: nativedc | November 9, 2009 1:07 PM | Report abuse

Vinny is in the same boat as Zorn which is way over his head. Vinny should be someone working under a competent Football executive. He's a Media and public relations guy that has no business in coach or player acquisition.

At this point they ought to have some fun with it. Seriously. Next week let Joe T call the plays. Week after that, let Sonny take a shot at it. Week after that, let D Mitch run with it. Riggo vs the Cowboys? You get the idea. Tell me that wouldn't be a hoot and get the crowd jazzed? The Skins have got nothing to lose and it can't be worse than the current approach.

Wait a minute, can Vinny handle buses? He might order up three vehicles that would be unable to follow their own routes and would need a season and a half just to take on a passenger.

The job is too important for him. How about in-stadium sign control?

Gosh I hope those guys had just shoved their hands down their shorts before shaking Vinny's hand.

Because otherwise, that's one of the most distressing photos I've seen in a long time.

The Skins are turning into the Wizards. They generally lose and occasionally peak and manage to make the playoffs. Maybe even win a playoff game.

I wonder if Cerrato is going to be like Wes Unseld.

I'll assume they're drunk out of their minds and have mistaken Vinny for Arthur Blank. Why else would a guy wear a Tony Banks jersey with what looks like a cowboy hat.

If Vinny ButtBoi™ Cerrato is living and dying by this, I'd say give him his Last Rites, by all means.

But since we know that ButtBoi's™ life line is the connection his pecker has with $nyder's cornhole, don't count on this Assmuncher going away anytime soon.

Until Dan "It feels so good when the fans lick by dirty brown hole" $nyder gets a restraining order keep ButtBoi™ from withina thousand mile radius of Landover and Ashburn, NOTHING WILL CHANGE.

the Ultimate in spin control:

The buzz: The Danny needs to get out and apologize to the fans.

The Spin: Danny gets out and, with camaras near by, "apologizes" to fans. Was it a real one? No. But all the media claimed us fans wanted was an apology, and we wanted to hear from the owner. And that is what we got.

The buzz: Danny is the defacto GM of the team, and Vinny is just the talking head.

The SPin: Venerated old QB comes out and says VINNY is making all the decisions at Redskins park. Who really believes that?

OK, I ran out of ideas that haven't already been drilled in to the ground. But one point I wanted to make after the "Black Heart" drama of last week: Danny probably isn't a bad guy. As long as you are and NFL player, a hollywood nutjob, or someone else who can enhance his image. Us fans are nothing to him. But he does take care of his "friends."

If this "thing" is the front grille of a bus headed back to California then I'm all for it.

Posted by: Predator48 | November 9, 2009 2:28 PM | Report abuse

I think the Danny's problem is that he doesn't have a "black heart". He's too loyal to his close friends, even when it's obvious he shouldn't be.

Under the Snyderatto era, the Redskins have been the poster boys of boring mediocrity at best, and at worst, the soul-crushing ineptitude the Redskins currently find themselves.

What Snyder needs to do (since he can't be "fired" as most fans wish, and he ain't sellin' the team) is hire a "black-hearted" GM to make ruthless moves (like cutting Portis, trading Landry, trading Kelly for a bag of donuts, etc) that need to be done for the good of the team. Snyder needs someone to tell him to sit down, shut up, and when GM Blackheart needs it, open up his checkbook.

Not true. Millen was a good football player for a couple Super Bowl winners before he became an inept GM. Vinny's not close to being in his league.

Posted by: vexed50verizonnet | November 9, 2009 5:47 PM | Report abuse

Sonny is old. And he is Danny's buddy. Poor Vinny is getting thrown under the bus. Its Danny's fault not Vinny's. Vinny the Gerbil doesn't burp, fart or take a dump w/o permission.

Poor Vinny hasn't had a date with Ms hand and her five finger death grip in years because Danny won't allow it!

Sonny needs to go to rehab. He is old and suffering from senile dementia.

Things have rally hit the bottom when Sonny is doing Danny's bidding. Sonny your are a punk. I might have to finally destroy that autograph you gave me back in 65.

Posted by: vaherder | November 9, 2009 6:01 PM | Report abuse

So, at best, Redskins fans will have to wait 10 months until the start of next season, to see them start over with someone that Dan Snyder has picked to replace Vinny Cerrato. And then see how many years it takes for that to work out.
The only solution for Redskins fans is for Snyder to be forced out as owner. And there is no way to do that. The next decade looks like a waste for the Redskins.

Posted by: johnc_80 | November 9, 2009 6:44 PM | Report abuse

vaherder - how dare you call Sonny a punk? Yes - please destroy his autograph as having been in your posession it is soiled...I hope you get a twin atomic wedgie with Vinny.

Fire Vinny - and save seats for the Danny, vaherder and DeAngelo on the bus heading out of town...

Raise your hand if you believe that Snyder had no hand in any of these decisions. Anyone? . . . Hello? . . . No one?

Me neither. Snyder is doing what he always does: covering his own ass by throwing someone else under the bus.

Sonny better be careful before Daniel Snyder puts the Sheeny Curse on him.

Posted by: ElBigChroizo | November 10, 2009 1:39 AM | Report abuse

It's really disappointing that Sonny had to drag Gibbs into this, saying it was his decision along with Snyder to let Vinny have the reins... Sonny, that's just pathetic. Everyone knows that you and Snyder are pals, but trying to say that the Vinny debacle is anything but 100% Snyder's fault is just pathetic. I've lost what little respect I had left for you.

Posted by: UberDave | November 10, 2009 2:15 AM | Report abuse

OK so Vinnie has been here 10 years and now all of a sudden with the title he is "tied to it". Does that mean that his stellar acquisitions (ha ha) got him the title? This does not add up but was does in an incompetently run organization.

It's the Narcissist at the top stupid.

Posted by: hz9604 | November 10, 2009 6:58 AM | Report abuse

I like the photo, it looks as though Vinny is sinking in quicksand and begging the fans to pull him out. Fat chance.

Doesn't seem to me that firing or demoting Vinny is gonna help. Firing Spiro Agnew didn't save Tricky Dick's butt.

Posted by: laboo | November 10, 2009 7:28 AM | Report abuse

Vinny does not have the authority to sign Haynesworth to a 7yr 100M contract. That is all Danny. I would guess that Vinny is a patsy just like Zorn. Danny is making all the decisions and directing others to take the blame.

Posted by: RalphZero | November 10, 2009 7:32 AM | Report abuse

Ya, just lose Redskins, just lose...high draft pick plus no more Vinny :) BTW, we all realize that Danny is calling the shots and frankly it is obvious da Vinny in da goat....I am fine with that personally...IF DANNY FINALLY GETS IT AND STEPS BACK after hiring real football people...If we take a Punter in the first round next spring, we will know nothing changed won't we.

Posted by: CADMT | November 10, 2009 12:31 PM | Report abuse

C'mon - it's evident to everybody and their aunt that Vinny doesn't know what he's doing. If Danny doesn't break down and turn over day-to-day to a qualified GM, he's toast, because nothing will change. Zorn's a nice guy, but he's not a head coach. NO head coach with any sense will come to Washington under the situation it is in.

Lets hire L ron hubbards reincarnate, tom cruise as GM, he looks great in the box with his plastic-look self.
Vinny's not going anywhere, he's literally got dan by the nuts. He's got too much dirt on snidely, that's the scientology way of retaining their members. Make them admit to their dirty sex secrets and use it later to keep them in line.

losing respect for Sonny by the minute, we all know he talks to little Danny, and covering for him by throwing Vinny under the bus is just sad - and what for? an extra paycheck here or there?

Sonny, be like Riggo and grow a pair

Posted by: TGT11 | November 10, 2009 2:33 PM | Report abuse

Sonny has always been a scumbag. Now he's carrying Snyder's water to blame it all on Vinnie, who doesn't take a piss without Danny's direction to the men's room.

Sonny works for Snyder, as do Theismann, Blatche, and almost all the media. No wonder Riggo is now a pariah with them.
Give credit to Channel 4 for honesty - at least they hired a real high school cheerleader as their sports "reporter".

Sonny is a legend which is why he will not run afoul of $nyder. He and Doc Walker appear to be able to critique without feeling the heat from the Park.

$nyder's vindictiveness and ego will continue to ruin this team. The Danny doesn't identify with Detroit or the Browns or the Raiders, oh no.

He sees that Mike Brown FINALLY turned it around in the 'Nati and he's thinking 'It only took ol Mike 19 years to turn it around...I got PLENTY of time and I can squeeze even more dollars out of the Brand and catch Jerry...sounds like a PLAN'.

This isn't a case loyalty, of sticking with your team thru down times. This is watching the ship sail into the iceberg and wishing it turns away while doing and saying nothing. Keep supporting with your hard earned dollars and that's exactly what you are doing. Your dollars are your VOICE!!

We are stuck like kids in a bad marriage if we continue to support this organization.

Yes, that's it exactly ! ... The 'Skins only hope for the future is for this season to be such a complete crash-n-burn disaster , such a kick in the yarbos shock to Snyder's system ,that he is unable to escape/deny the obvious - that Vinny must go & he must hire a real GM & stay out of his way ... Anything less than the trauma of total humiliation is not likely to be enough to make Snyder change his ways ...

Good point, and no I don't (even if he did, might not be easy to find anyone who's any good who'd want to work for the ahole anyway) .... We'd have to hope Snyder reaches out to somebody for direction on that ,and who might even act as a sort-of headhunter for him in that regard (Gibbs maybe?) ..

Only question is why Snyder didn't make this clearer sooner.
