Theismann: 'I think Jim is a quarterback coach'

Joe Theismann and John Riggins haven't always agreed about matters burgundy and gold. Most recently, they disagreed last week, when Riggins said that owner Daniel Snyder is a bad guy with a dark heart, and Theismann disagreed, calling Riggins "way out of line," vindictive and "downright harsh" on the Two Live Stews radio show.

When the two guys collaborated on Riggins's latest YouTube creation, they also seemed to disagree about whether the Redskins had reached the level of farce.

"You have Sherm Lewis calling the pass plays and you have Sherm Smith calling the running plays," Riggins said with scorn. "This is unprecedented at the ankle biters level. What the hell? How do you explain this? How do you explain this, when you look people in the eye and you want to be legitimate, that this is a legitimate NFL franchise?"

"It is a legitimate NFL franchise," Theismann said. "I I think there are faults on the offensive side. I didn't agree with Sherm Lewis calling the plays. I didn't agree with someone that had been in the organization three weeks coming in, and all of the sudden you say, 'OK, you call plays now.' And I don't agree with the riding bike philosophy...."

"Riding a bicycle and an NFL offense, they're not apples and apples, which takes me up the ladder one more notch," Riggins said. "I mean, Jim Zorn is Jim Zorn. In your opinion, is this guy a head coach in the NFL?

"I think Jim, I think Jim is a quarterback coach," Theismann finally said. "I think he's a heck of a quarterback coach."

Yeah. That's not really a compliment, in this particular case.

Those were the days when you walk around PROUD to be a Washington Redskin fan!!!

Give up GM-ing the team, Dan. You've proven yourself to be inept at playing "GM"! Give us our team back!

I want these guys doing gameday radio.

"Riding a bicycle and an NFL offense, they're not apples and apples"

Posted by: Riggo

So true. At first I didn't think too much of what Vinny had said (not that I ever do), but after thoughtful consideration, I realize that it's ONE of the most ridiculous things he's ever said. It doesn't top when he said that Chris Samuels' injury issues are "all in his head". Only in Washington would someone this moronic be allowed to keep his job.

Wikipedia on Vinny:

And this apparently true, btw...
"Cerrato starred in the 1994 movie "Kindergarten Ninja" portraying Police Sergeant Antonelli."

You neglected to report that Theissman later corrected himself, saying:

"I think Jim WOULD BE a heck of a quarterbacks coach... that is, IF he knew anything about coaching AND if he had anything remotely resembling a quarterback to work with."

Theisman wants Sonny's job on Sunday. Come on he is so transparent defending the fool who will make the hiring decision.

Posted by: sheepherder | November 10, 2009 10:55 AM | Report abuse

Everything that needs to be said about Zorn and the team has been said... no real story here. The only thing we have to worry about now is whether management will do anything about it.

Posted by: skinfannomore | November 10, 2009 11:31 AM | Report abuse

Theisman is an idiot, as evidenced by his disagreement with Riggins on one hand and while explaining his disagrement, agreeing with Riggin's major points. What a moron!

No, Riggins is spot on and speaks for most Redskins fans. Theisman is his usual whimpy self.

Fire CerRATto!

Theismann is scrambling around but can't find an openning -oops sack that idiot.

Why is Joey T Danny-boy's mouthpiece? He's been all glowing about the DANNY and throwing Zorn under the bus. Pretty sad.

Posted by: you-dont | November 10, 2009 1:04 PM | Report abuse

If I'm The Daniel Snyder, I am signing Theismann and Riggo to a radio deal very very soon. They're the perfect radio combo: Two guys with a common bond, blabbermouths, with differences of opinion. I bet they could talk for hours, and rake in some huge advertising $$$$

With each passing week, the statement that Vinny made regarding the 'playoff roster' becomes more and more of a farce. For this reason and this reason alone, he should be canned.
There is more blame to go around, but for Heaven's sake, let's start here...We'll never know exactly what caliber of coach Jim Zorn is with this roster.

Posted by: spqr2k | November 10, 2009 1:24 PM | Report abuse

Theismann's always wanted Sonny's job...I guess he's still after it 30 years later.

Posted by: spqr2k | November 10, 2009 1:27 PM | Report abuse

Why are you idiots attacking Theismann? Tired of attacking Danny and Vinny? Wow, he said Zorn was a good QB coach. So now he is an idiot? He is a good QB coach, most of you are idiots. Whiney idiots

Since John Riggins has all the answers, let him apply this wealth of knowledge and get a GM or Coaching gig,(I'm positive there will be a few at the end of the season.) To all the fans that think they know how to fix this thing, put your money where your mouth is...Jacksonville Jags can be bought. Buy them, then tell me how things should be done.

Everybody is making to big of a deal over Riggins comment. I listened to it and the tone of his voice making the dark heart comment suggested to be tongue in cheak. Lets say it wasn't, look at just a few of his decisions that became public. Start with the tree cuttings at his house. He fires everybody at Redskin park as soon as he buys the team. He fires 25 employees in a cost cutting move. Then signs a player for over 100 million dollars 42 million guarenteed. Then we have the season ticket fiasco where he sues the lady who looses her job. He takes away his head coaches duties and gives them to a man who has been out of football for 5 or 6 years hoping he will quit and negate his contract. So just how far off was Mr. Riggins?

REDSKINS ASSEMBLE PLAYOFF ROSTER.

Dateline: Washington, D.C.

Vinnie Cerrato, Chief Architect of the explosive Washington Redskin offensive attack and director of the Devistating Tackling Machine of the Redskins' Defense, has proclaimed "we have the roster to take us to the playoffs."

Indeed the Redskins have a playoff caliber team - having just announced that they have withdrawn from the NFL and have entered the "Sell Short Football League".

"Our team is really leading our conference. We've sold ourselves short for years and its really paying off now. Who knew that scoring fewer points than anyone one else would reap such rewards!" said Cerrato as he was leaning back in his leather chair smoking a stoggie.

"Look around you - no one does so much to do so little than our team - everywhere you look there is medicority - its dripping off the walls and ceilings of Redskin Park. Can't you feel it - I know our fans will! When we take the field every Sunday from now on our fans will bask in our glory - we are Number 32! We are number 32!"

In other Redskin news....

Clinton Portis really does think he is Sheriff I wanna Call My Mommie.

Ladell Betts remarked that he feels really funny gaining positive yards behind the same offensive line that imploded when Clinton Portis was running the ball. "Damn, I don't even have Mike Sellers blocking for me!"

Jim Zorn is hoping that he'll have a turnaround and go 6-2 in his last eight games to be the only coach in history to go 6-2, 2-6, 2-6, and 6-2 in his first 32 games.

Daniel Snyder was seen smashing an ant farm and stomping bugs by name "Vinnie!" "Jim!".

The NFL is investigating whether the Redskins are throwing their season to get the first pick in the upcoming draft. League sources are denying this report because that would indicate intelligent life in the front office and some form of cogent thinking.

Riggo is right on and raises the right questions.

Theismann is in la-la land and has been drinking the kool-aide Snyderrato has been serving.

Fact is, this defense is awful (as of course, the offense is as well).

Fact is, the defense could keep up with the offenses of lousy football teams (the ones they played in weeks 2-6 this season). However, this defense CANNOT keep up with the offenses of GOOD football teams (that they'll play the rest of the season - with the exception of the piss-poor Raider football team).

Good teams expose both the BAD offense of the Skins and the REALLY BAD defense of this football team.

Nothing will change anytime soon folks.

If you got Theismann defending Snyderrato, you know you're in trouble.

Again, Riggo is right on.

Correction: I meant to say, GOOD teams expose the BAD defense of the Skins and the REALLY BAD Skins' offense.

Most of you should just chill out. Riggo is Riggo...outspoken and is right on most issues. Theismann can say the wrong thing sometimes, but still as a former Redskin, he knows what's happening.
The fact of the matter is that The Danny has ruined this team...period. Look at the 10-year history, the exception being some success under Gibbs. It doesn't matter who the quarterback and head coach are as long as this poisonous work environment and inept management style continue to be in place.

Posted by: alco5521 | November 11, 2009 2:59 AM | Report abuse

I disagree Joey T. If someone came to Dan with a can't lose purposal, he wouldn't necessarily take it. As Riggo says, it's ego - "maybe" not because Dan can't admit he is wrong, BUT because Dan doesn't want to be that THIRD guy BELOW his GM and HC. He is just like Jerry Jones n this resepct, thus we lose and never get a TOP GM who hires the HC himself.

Joey talks too much and interupts too much. Great on TV though.

Posted by: PinotNoir | November 11, 2009 4:06 AM | Report abuse

We'll see from part 3 of video, but Riggins is correct: Dan Snyder would rather be involved in football decisions than win. He would rather lose than give up control. The Redskins are all about Dan Snyder -- not vice versa. That is why Riggins believes Dan Snyder has a "dark heart." I agree.

Posted by: Pepper5 | November 11, 2009 10:19 AM | Report abuse

We used to think we could and should win almost every game we play. Now we watch assuming a blow out but holding out small hope that we might keep it close and maybe win. This is not a fun way to watch our Redskins. Gibbs had us going in the right direction and as soon as he leaves it goes down the drain. This gives me hope that as soon as another competent President/GM comes on board we can quickly turn it back around. This has been like having a substitue teacher that no one respects and no one tries hard for.

Posted by: Gibbs4Pres | November 11, 2009 10:56 AM | Report abuse

Now you bash Theismann? Holy Cow you guys are unhappy with your lives! Riggins WAS wrong to say that about Snyder
And I look at the roster and think of what could have been if we selected 3 offensive linemen in '08 instead of 3 zombies with shoulder pads. Whoever pulled the trigger on THAT idea needs to be strung up!

Posted by: wewbank1 | November 11, 2009 1:18 PM | Report abuse

Riggins has been 100% right on the entire way.

Theismann was just going too far to be PC "I totally dont agree with you... except that I acknowledge everything you said is true".

And hey whoever was talking about the Jags - maybe we can tar and feather Snyderrato and drive them out of town and they can buy them. Then maybe some alliance of Gibbs racing and J. Cooke jr. can buy the Skins and we can have our team back... oops dreaming again...
