Cerrato to interview Jimmy Clausen

This has already been one of the weirdest weeks in D.C. sports talk history.

1) Jim Bowden interviews Stan Kasten, his former boss.

2) Jim Bowden interviews Manny Acta, his former employee.

3) Jim Zorn goes on The Jim Zorn Show, is asked about the Sherm Lewis hiring, and refuses to answer, saying "That's a bad question, sorry. I wouldn't answer that question." This is on a show bearing his name.

4) A national radio host says the Nationals will appear in the World Series in short order.

But none of that can compare to Friday's extravaganza. According to ESPN 980, Vinny Cerrato--an ex-Notre Dame guy, who has already been to Notre Dame this season to scout quarterback Jimmy Clausen--will have as a guest on his radio show, that's right, quarterback Jimmy Clausen!

So is this a job interview? A media interview? A chance to throw other GMs off the scent? Or just another absurd moment in a week full of 'em.

You be the judge! Inside the Red Zone airs from 8 to 10 on ESPN 980, and it'll be weird, if nothing else.

Vinny is such a joker!

Can't wait for the transcript.

If Ceratto drafts a QB in the first round I hope he (VC) spontaneously combusts the second it's announced at the draft.

Posted by: REXskins | December 10, 2009 4:19 PM | Report abuse

Wel, the 'Skins have no QB (aside from no coach) for next season at this point. Most pundits have Clausen as the highest QB prospect, and probably around #3 or #4 in the draft.

Suh and Ingram will probably go before him. Detroit (2-10) wont draft another QB, Cleveland maybe 1-11-if they get rid of one of the two they got), Bucs (1-11) wont draft another QB, St. Louis (1-11) might be in the ring for QB, KC (3-9) will not draft him, Buffalo (4-8) probably will.

Posted by: vmrg1974 | December 10, 2009 4:51 PM | Report abuse

But knowing Vinny, he'll draft a WR with Clausen sitting right there available in the draft.

Posted by: vmrg1974 | December 10, 2009 4:53 PM | Report abuse

another reason why this man is a tool and should be disbarred or whatever it is they do to strip him of his powers. you think vinny's gonna fluff up clausen to make others think he's going to draft him, but he's secretly coveting some big left tackle? no way. this is a joke of the highest order.

A radio interview is no big deal. But if they have dinner togther, that's when we'll need to really worry.

Posted by: hapster | December 10, 2009 5:16 PM | Report abuse

Re-sign Jason for 3 years, draft a lineman in the 1st round and a QB in Rd 4 or 5 for long-term development.

Posted by: JamWhitt | December 10, 2009 5:24 PM | Report abuse

For me, this is a "serious gut check of whether or not I really want to remain a fan of this team" interview.

I may become an NFL refugee if Clausen is drafted in the first round by the current braintrust.

Thank you. Good to know at least some intelligent skins fans out there. But I'd take it a step further:

1. We'll be lucky if campbell is willing to resign with us

2. We shouldn't waste a 4th or 5th on a QB (unless our REAL GM that has replaced vinny thinks it makes sense), but instead draft more OL or a LB

3. If Vinny is still here then nothing matters. If Vinny is gone, but Snyder doesn't replace him with someone who is clearly in charge, then nothing matters.

So a real GM, vinny completely gone, or any fan that actually wants the skins to succeed just stops paying attention.

If Hitler, oops i mean Snyder, retains Cerrato and those two morons draft Clausen this team should and hopefully will lose half its fan base. I'll be the first to go. Snyder was rated in 2001 as one of the top 10 worst owners in sports on an ESPN poll less than 2 years after buying the team. So tired of rooting for this cluster F. Where has the burgandy revolution gone? Don't lose it just because we were close in the last 3 games and Devin Thomas scored 2 TDs. Stop going to games and paying Hitler money

Posted by: siessmack | December 10, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

Jimmah is Un-clutch. And unlikable. And a real GM/owner would be concerned about the track record of QBs that leave early. Spoiler alert: its not good.

Posted by: asbloom | December 10, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

This is a complete joke. What a freakin' clown. Snyder should have had a new talent guy in here 4 weeks ago. Instead, the raquet ball twins are scampering across the country "scouting" the two most overrated NFL QB prospects coming out of college. So long as Vinny is still around, it is a sure thing the Skins draft one of these guys and continue the misery well into the next decade. This is so infuriating.

You know, this is exactly why this franchise is the laughing stock of the NFL. It makes my heart sick thinking of this once proud franchise being held hostage by two of the biggest, know-nothing idiots in the business. And what's that this bubble-eyed clown will remain the GM of this team because the Keebler Elf owner has no clue how to run an NFL franchise. What a joke!

Gov. Sanford went to Argentina to meet with his "soul-mate" lover.
Danny and Vinny took a "scouting Trip" together.
Now, I'm not implying anything, but...

in all of the past things the Skins have done... would anyone who has a clue do the same thing over and over...nobody even a kid will still put his or hand on a hot stove... is this to prove some kind of manhood thing...not to be humble... your wife went through a very serious a humbling experience... you are still in control... you can still give this team a NFC east (not wco) type of offense. offensive line first... but talking to the air... which other employees of yours have implied...brings to mind shakesperian comedy Much to do about Nothing

Posted by: travmanf | December 11, 2009 12:33 AM | Report abuse

Simple. Whoever Ceratto recommends, don't hire or draft him.

It's like a friend who is an awful stockpicker, as soon as he recommends one you sell it short.

This way Danny can keep him around for racquetball purposes and also have him do the 'Skins some good.

Posted by: glynnjp1 | December 11, 2009 1:53 AM | Report abuse

Scouting a QB? WTF? They have lost their rocker. Whoever plays QB won't matter with an o-line. Unbelievable.

Posted by: REDSKINRAYINCA | December 11, 2009 3:43 AM | Report abuse

This is why this man doesn't need a radio show, let alone be touching this team.

Posted by: stwasm | December 11, 2009 7:18 AM | Report abuse

I listened to that Cerrato fiasco on radio for about 5 minutes before I had to turn it off because of his incessant, insecure, goofball laughter of his own jokes. I wonder if that is the comforting sound that Daniel Snyder love and cherish when they are traveling together or codling in the war room for draft picks.

Posted by: JohnWWW | December 11, 2009 9:00 AM | Report abuse

My questions:
Is Clausen getting any appearance $ for appearing on the show?
Is this the way to woo a potential draft pick?
Is this a way to vet a potential draft pick to the Skins fans?
Does this make Vinny akin to a Tennessee admissions hostess?
Is a clear signal that all the pressure on the team to abandon the decade-long dysfunction for a competent football organization has fallen on deaf (dumb) ears?
Are we supposed to say, "Oooo, a shiny new quarterback! I guess that and a new toady coach makes everything better" ?
Is it now time to take my Redskins helmet out to the backyard and burn it a la the Orioles cap I ignited back in 1997 is protest to Angelos owning the team?
Do football helmets burn?

Washington Redskins: 1.3 billion dollars
A clue: pricelees

If Danny and Vinny have anything to do with recruiting new players or trading for current players, we'll have another losing season. I can't believe that both of these guys thinks they are geniuses. They are both so dam* stupid, it's funny. Hey Vinny, who told you that you were GM material? Danny, who told you that you could lead a football team? It's apparent that it was each other lying to the other and to us-the fans.

I understand everybody being upset with how the Skins are run with clowns like Vinny. But for anybody who has to debate if they still want to be a fan of this team is not really a fan in the first place. You can't just stop being a fan in bad times if you are a true fan an love your team.

Umm, just stop being a fan in bad times? Are you serious? The bad times have been going on for nearly two decades now! All of the non-committed fans have been driven out long ago. Anyone who, at this point, is saying, "this is the final straw" - they're the real deal, and the kind of fans the Dan should be doing everything in his power to keep around.

Posted by: fr3dmars | December 11, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Did Vinny interview Reed Doughty before drafting him? No offense to Reed, but did Vinny notice he had trouble hearing? (Now that Reed's got the hearing aid, he doesn't repeat the same mistakes - hears the coaches comments and everything.) But.... how could you draft someone with a hearing problem without noticing it???? Vinny doing the same due diligence on this year's crop?

Posted by: jburnetti | December 11, 2009 11:17 PM | Report abuse

Cerrato is a smuck. He should go back to Notre Dame to get his degree instead of checking out Ryan Clover-Leaf. Maybe they would let him be their athletic director. He wants a pair of Colts on his hip but picking the Notre Dame kid high would guarantee a tenured high ranking position after being laughed out of the NFL.

IF Zorn did anything it would be to prep Campbell to lead a solid team to the super bowl if the Skins could ever build a solid team with Cerrato under foot. Campbell is a big, strong armed, touch passer who has excelled despite facing some of the worst preasure in the NFL. About the only area they could improve in the draft at QB is pure foot speed if they find a Randel Cunningham type guy though it would be unlikely any would have ever faced the preasure Campbell has. Especially with a top pick. Their is probably a Vick type guy who had moderate success despite being on an awful team because of his mobility available as a late second day pick, but even then the Skins can't really afford to waste a pick.

grimreefa, you're missing the point and i know the short yellow bus can't be going all that fast...a real fan is a fan for live. doesn't matter if the bad times are 2 decades or a century. fans have a heart for the team. fairweather a-s-s-holes jump off at the first sign if failure. if you want back to back to back winning seasons, here's what you do...and this is an easy fix. go buy a ps3 or an xbox360. also purchase madden 2010. plug it into your tv, turn on the system, insert the game and when you get to the option menu, change the difficulty setting to "rookie". now pick the redskins as your team and start the season. best part about it is, if the other team scores on you or gains a first down, you can reset and do a "do over". before you know it, you'll be playing in the superbowl. the score will be like 150 to 0 and you can move on to the next season. repeat the process and you have a dynasty!!!

Claussen is a great option for the Skins in the draft. But not even Vinnie is stupid enough to draft a player in December. If Washington signs quality veteran O-linemen to some free agent deals, why WOULDN'T they draft Claussen. Campbell should have played well against K.C., Detroit and Dallas. Then maybe we could talk about keeping him.

I went to the New Orleans game and went into the tent where they auction off Redskins Memorabilia. There was a "Game Worn" Jason Campbell jersey up for bid. The ENTIRE BACK WAS GREEN - as in grass stained. As God as my witness and on my Father's grave (a great Redskin fan who shared many a Scotch with #9), if this piece os s--- Cerrato stays around and they draft Claussen, I will become a Cowboys Fan, I share the hate every one of you do for the Star, it's owner and it's fans. I am simply over this abortion of a franchise. If this owner does not make the right move, this fan of 44 years goes to the Dark Side.

Posted by: obxfannings | December 12, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

The Redskins should not draft any quarterback that is slated in the first round. The skins will probably have a top eight pick. There are only two first round offensive tackles Russell Okung and Trent Williams and they both will be gone if the Skins draft 7 or 8. There are 4 to 5 tackles slated in the second round. The skins should trade as many players that they can for some 4th or 5th round picks or higher if possible. They should even try and trade down their first round pick for more picks. If C J Spiller is available you draft him. You draft your tackle or tackles and guards in round 2 and 4 and 5. If Dan Lefevour is available in round 3 draft him. Spiller is an explosive Brian Mitchell and more. He will be a game changer. He will also play with a chip on his shoulder and could very well be another Chris Johnson. If you draft Clausen, McCoy, Bradford, you're wasting money. If Cerrato is there then he will do something dumb! He has to Go!

FIRE VINNY NOW! This is the ONLY thing "the Danny" needs to do and he should have done it weeks ago so that a new, real GM could begin his evaluation process DURING the season.

As much as I hate how this season has turned out I still wouldn't implode this team just yet and I DEFINITELY wouldn't get rid of Jason Campbell, he's a baller and will be a SuperBowl MVP in the future! Jim Zorn has been castrated due to his poor play calling, but whose fault is that?! It was Vinny & Danny that thought they could hire a head coach to call plays that hadn't even be an offensive coordinator! These are the same nuts that proceeded to hire Defensive & Offensive coordinators BEFORE hiring a head coach...amateur IDIOTS!!!

I totally agree with the many comments here that if Vinny is allowed to continue his hair-brained evaluation & draft process then there will be total bedlam next year from the fans. Just remember Adam Archuletta, Jason Taylor, and the totally wasted 6th round '08 draft choice of punter Durant Brooks, who didn't even make the team!

Posted by: starpopper | December 13, 2009 6:37 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, Brooks did make the team but was cut after 6th game...still a total waste of a precious draft pick! Totally agree with trading down to get more picks!

Posted by: starpopper | December 13, 2009 6:44 PM | Report abuse

If we are going to draft a QB, I would hope that it would be Bradford and not Clausen!!

Posted by: myfuncplinsc | December 13, 2009 7:46 PM | Report abuse

If not a QB, then draft Trent Williams or Gerald McCoy (Suh won't be available)

Knowing Snyder, he will draft Tebow!

Posted by: myfuncplinsc | December 13, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

This team is starting to win in spite of ownership and the GM. J Campbell has been taking a beating, succeeding and has not bad mouthed the organization once. None of the QBs in college are going to be anywhere as good as Campbell is now and never will be.
