Sam Huff discusses Fred Davis's "vulgar" dance

(By John McDonnell - TWP)

I've spent a lot of recent Sundays listening to Redskins games on ESPN 980, but the three-man crew was in the rarest of forms during the Raiders broadcast. It's just vintage stuff, and it's the reason why the proper way to watch a game is on a 10-second DVR delay with the TV sound muted. No "Orapko" references from Dick Stockton that way, plus you get to hear Sam Huff talk about vulgar dance moves.

(Plus you get to hear old-timey highlights, including Frank Herzog call the Riggo touchdown against the Dolphins, which literally still causes goosebumps every time.)

Ok, a few highlights from Sunday's awesomeness.

The Black Hole

Michael: "This is as sterile an atmosphere as you're ever going to find in the National Football League."

Huff: "Sterile? Looks like a lot of tattooed people to me."

Fred Davis's bogus celebration call

Sam Huff: "It was a vulgar dance."

Larry Michael: "He's allowed to dance."

Huff: "I know, but it was vulgar...."

Michael: "What did he do? You're allowed to dance, aren't you?"

Sonny Jurgensen: "Yeah, but he was doing a two-step, I think."

Michael: "Maybe he had a partner."

Huff: "I think he was thinking about a partner....."

Michael: "I've been watching the replays of Fred and his dance and he's been doing these dances all along. That's a cheap call, he was just doing his dance. I don't understand why there would be a flag thrown on that."

Sonny: "They didn't' like they way he danced. Dancing with the Stars, he's not gonna be on."

Huff: "That was in between a fast dance and a slow dance."

Sonny: "What would you call that dance?"

Huff: "Ridiculous. I'm a slow dancer in the first place...I think he might get a fine for that dance. That could be an expensive dance for him. Didn't have to, either."

Fred Davis's second-TD spike

Huff: "He spiked that thing again! He never learns!"

Sonny: "You're allowed to spike it."

Huff: "You're allowed to spike it?"

Michael: "That shows you that he learned."

Text messaging

Huff: "I don't know how to do that....Some other people I know do that all the time. I've been reading about it."

The weather

Huff: "Does it feel like it's getting colder out here? I am, and I just had a cup of hot chocolate."

Nnamdi Asomugha

Huff: "Naomi? That's close enough. I used to know a Naomi."

Sam Huff is the worst. He doesn't know the modern game at all. The 'Skins should have kept Frank Herzog and replaced Sam and Sonny.

Posted by: TCAP79 | December 14, 2009 9:43 AM | Report abuse

This is a terrible crew. Michael will be getting ready to call a play and these 2 yahoos are talking over him to each other about formation, shifts, etc. That's Michael's job. Just sit there and be yokels for 10 seconds after each play. Then sit there and try to force down another mouthful of metamucil.

Posted by: cao091402 | December 14, 2009 9:49 AM | Report abuse

remember back before the Skins were broadcast by Snyders station, the delay between TV and radio was almost alwayse less then a second off. Sins Larry and Danny and 980 it changes week to week but is never close.

Posted by: alex35332 | December 14, 2009 9:57 AM | Report abuse

Problem is Larry tends to forget to mention things like formation motion play action or general details. The voices in Madden do a better job in play by play then larry

there is nothing vulgar about that dance. thats absurd. how is that a penalty but leaping like a little fairy into the stands isnt? that is a steaming pile of bull ess. nfl = no fun league. its entertainment, grow a pair and stop being a victim.

Posted by: johnnysears1 | December 14, 2009 10:04 AM | Report abuse

Sam and Sonny are hysterical - it's like listening to Statler and Waldorf from the Muppets call a football game. And yeah, it would help if Larry Michael would remember to do things like mention what the score of the game is every once in a while.

The response to the second Davis TD was pretty funny as well - Sonny's whooping, and Sam's muttering in the background, "No dancing. No dancing. No dancing."

I don't know why fans find still find these guys entertaining. It's been time to move on from Sonny and Sam for years. They were fine back in the 80's but I would rather hear Doc Walker or B Mitch on the radio broadcast now. I thought I was the only one who noticed how stupid Dick Stockton sounded continually saying ORAPKO. This is the same guy who kept calling Mark Brunell "Scott Brunell" a few years ago until his partner finally corrected him. Get these geesers out of the booth.

Sam and Sonny are awesome. Local radio broadcasts should have a bunch of homers who just talk nonsense the whole time. That is what makes it so fun!

Posted by: Handsome_John_Pruitt | December 14, 2009 10:26 AM | Report abuse

Sonny and Sam are the best. Great chemistry and they make even losing games fun. God help us if we get a know nothing blowhard like Walker or Mitchell in the future.

Posted by: poguesmahone | December 14, 2009 10:39 AM | Report abuse

I too think it is time to move in a new direction for the booth. Time has passed them by.

Posted by: sitruc | December 14, 2009 10:57 AM | Report abuse

these two are hilarious, and the best reason to listen to sports on the radio...

you can't make up the stuff they say. not to mention, they are unabashed homers.

Sounds like Sam has become football's Andy Rooney...."ever notice how everyone under 70 sucks?"

Posted by: nonsensical2001 | December 14, 2009 11:41 AM | Report abuse

The fact is that Sonny and Sam are ENTERTAINING!!! That's what this is suppose to be all about!!
Who wants a team like Walker and Mitchell who would only be negative as well as boring!! Watch them after the game so they can tell you how much better things were when they were on the field!
Sonny and Sam are DC institutions!!!

Posted by: dkidwell61 | December 14, 2009 11:42 AM | Report abuse

How nice was it to see kick offs consistently make it to the goal line or past!!!!
Additionally, Danny Smith must go!!

Posted by: dkidwell61 | December 14, 2009 11:44 AM | Report abuse

Please, please, please change the booth this off-season. Sam is embarrassing himself week after week - it's tarnishing his image as an NFL colossus.

I'd be more than happy with all three out and younger talent replacing them. But I think that a two man booth of Sonny and Michael will be most likely.

Yeah, but it's worth it just to hear Sonny slam him time and time again!!
Fact is Sam was is one of the greatest all time linebackers!! Unlike Riggo, he has credentials even if you don't agree!!

those who can dance - do. those who can't - sit in the press box and make fun of those who can. (wishing they, too, could dance).

Posted by: cantremember1 | December 14, 2009 11:48 AM | Report abuse

keep dancing fred. those are the same people who say the skins don't show enough emotion. when they do, they still have something to say.

so, yes. celebrate those TDs! both of them.

Posted by: cantremember1 | December 14, 2009 11:49 AM | Report abuse

You missed this one:
Doc Walker: The Raiders fans are all still standing. We need to take them out of the game.
Sam: They're standing because their seats are wet.

The 10 second delay wasn't Synder, it was an FCC rule put into place just in case someone used a curse word.

Posted by: akmzrazor | December 14, 2009 12:00 PM | Report abuse

Anybody on a 4-9 team shouldn't be dancing!
Act like you've done it before Fred!

I believe you severely edited the transcript of what was actually said for space concerns.

What I heard was
"Live from the ADVERTISEMENT booth brought to you by ADVERTISEMENT, this is S,S,LM Advertising/analyzing the game. This analysis is sponsored by ADVERTISEMENT. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT oh gosh a td, brought to you by ADVERTISEMENT"

Posted by: jbanks979 | December 14, 2009 12:09 PM | Report abuse

One of the best things about Sonny and Sam is that while they are definitely pulling for the 'Skins, they have no qualms about calling players out, questioning plays, and even *gasp* giving credit to the opposing team/players. (Things very few radio-broadcasts across do.)
Even if you're not watching the game, you can get a pretty good image of what's going on. And that's the whole point of a radio broadcast.

Posted by: Grooven | December 14, 2009 12:14 PM | Report abuse

All you nay-sayers about Sonny & Sam here are just to young (and...) to appreciate them or their wit. Only issue here is we are missing one of them.....we miss you Frank.

Go skins...

I was in the car for the hot chocolate line. He said it with a real funny old man voice. I love Sam & Sonny, let them stay on forever, senility be damned.

My only wish is that we still had Frank Herzog. Larry Michael is a buffoon suck-up.

Posted by: jpfterps | December 14, 2009 12:16 PM | Report abuse

I like Sonny, but I think Sam Huff needs to retire. Maybe they can replace him with someone like LAvar, or Riggo?

Posted by: Veretax | December 14, 2009 12:17 PM | Report abuse

Sam and Sonny should be allowed to carry on as long as they want. As a previous poster said "senility be damned." Sonny is still sharp but Sam hasn't got a clue.

As for Larry Michael...he is an utter embarrassment. I don't understand how he can continuously spout the company line with a straight face. He is garbage and has as much credibility (dare I say integrity) as a balled up gym sock.

Posted by: DisgustedinArlington | December 14, 2009 12:29 PM | Report abuse

Since we're on this topic - I only have one thing to say: "Touchdown Washington Redskins". I would PAY to have that back. (Hope you're reading Frank...and thanks for keeping it honest in the booth and calling it like you saw it as opposed to saying what the Redskins wanted you to say.)

Posted by: DisgustedinArlington | December 14, 2009 12:36 PM | Report abuse

1. Their show is unlistenable anyway, since it's out of sync with the tv broadcast.
2. maybe if Davis performed better and scored more routinely, he wouldn't have to do the ME ME ME! dance.

Posted by: Max231 | December 14, 2009 12:50 PM | Report abuse

The only thing worse then Larry Michaels calling a game is Larry Michales hosting Redskins Nation. That show blows of epic proportions. Sam and Sonny are hilarious. I swear Sam asked 10 times yesterday where Ganther came from and Sonny had to point out that he had already told him in the 1st qtr, Tennessee. Good stuff.

How many yards, first downs or points do you get in the NFL for this type of extra curricular nonsense? The answer is ZERO(0)as in NONE(0).

The game is about making plays and doing what you get paid millions of dollars to do - not about dancing and prancing and jiving and posing and posturing. If that's what you want to do then go into the "entertainment" business and become a rapper/or hip hop "artist." All of these shenanigans should be banned and fined everytime they occur - PERIOD!

I hope some of the real NFL vets on the Redskins took Davis aside and pointed out the error and immaturity of his ways. That 15 yard penalty could have possibly hurt us in a close game.

Posted by: SkinsKen | December 14, 2009 2:13 PM | Report abuse

They canned Frank Herzog, they will probably can Sam and Sonny in the near future. Everything that positively connects fans to this team is being stripped away gradually until we're left with a bland, corporate-styled entity that is Skins in name only!

I'm surprised they haven't gotten rid of Sonny yet for all his comments about management...

Ok, here's what I really wanted to say; Screw Larry Michael. I've had enough of his extremist enthusiasm from his Redskin Nation program. Let Sam and Sonny run the broadcast booth.

Sam and Sonny are the only reason I would even turn on 980 during a game. They are old, but they still rock. Larry Michael is just another one of Snyders tools who weaseled his way in. I miss Frank!

BTW, if you're talking about flubs on the air.....Dick Stockton is the absolute worst. Wrong name, wrong team, etc....over and over.

Posted by: jahs4fun | December 14, 2009 2:58 PM | Report abuse

Let us hope that Sonny and Sam get to wrap up their radio careers on their terms. Frank was dismissed by Snyder in one of this patented classless moves. Let us also hope that they are replaced by someone unlike Doc "1st one off the bus to the buffet table" Walker.

Sorry but senile, old men don't make for good radio. They don't have a clue what's happening on the field about 90% of the time and they just talk over each other without any regard to what it sounds like on the radio.

i can't believe it! people actually don't like Sam and Sonny!? they represent a time in football when it truly was a game by and about and for the common, hard working men and women of the time. they truly played for the love of the sport, they had to take summer jobs just to make ends meet! you knew them, they were part of the community you lived in, they were CHARACTERS! that carried on all the way through the 80's, you had THE OVER THE HILL GANG, THE FUN BUNCH, THE DIESEL, THE SMURFS! come on, loosen up Sandy baby! i might be dating myself, but you can't have fun like that, at a Skins football game ever againg, whole different mindset. when Sam and Sonny talk you better listen, remember, respect you elders, there's a reason for that saying. you want to know football, you listen to Sam and Sonny! i'm 59, i work younger people, they have different teams they root for all over the league, but to a man and woman, they all love Sam and Sonny, every one of them. i don't know what you're looking for in a broad cast team, but they're ain't one better, no where in this great country of ours, and no duo with more knowledge and stories than these two old birds, God bless them and those wonderful times and RFK, that's all that's left, that's the history, Sam and Sonny, Riggo, Doc, once they're gone, they'll be a whole generation of sports fans who have no idea what they missed, so you better listen and grasp it now Mr. and Mrs. Jestson.

Sonny and Sam are getting older. As much as people want to blame everything on ownership (even when the team wins or plays well...... Best fan??). Sam more then Sonny is lost it and probably should be replaced like Pat Summerall had to be replaced.

It happens, what can you say.

I did enjoy the victory and the cowboy loss yesterday.......

I love Sonny and Sam. I have been listening to them since the glory days of the 80's. NOBODY can replace them. I do wish Frank was back and that brownnoser corporate man Larry was gone. When listening on the radio you need all the info so you can visualize the game taking place. I watch the game but listen to them, it's much more fun. The TV has just as many commercial ads as radio.
WE love ya Sonny and grumpy sounding

But it will be only because Snyder will not be able to get who he really wants because nobody wants to work for him.

Posted by: lefthandedslingshot | December 14, 2009 5:01 PM

This wild theory has been circulating since early 2008, after former Skins beat reporter Jason La Canfora created this idea out of thin air to justify his repeatedly incorrectly assertions about the Redskins last coaching search. You see, JLC could not explain why the Redskins didn't land Bill Cowher (among others) so he decided it must have been because no respectable coach would want to work for Snyder. Nevermind the fact that Cowher didn't come out of retirement for any other team that year, or the following year. Nevermind the fact that Snyder had no problem convincing highly sought after coaches Marty Schottenheimer, Joe Gibbs, and even Steve Spurrier to come work for him.

The idea that all the respectable coaches out there believe they are too good for Snyder's millions is so beyond laughable it's simply amazing how many gullible fans have bought into it.

If there's one thing the wild theories all have in common, it's that they are almost always untrue.

As far as Sam and Sonny- leave them alone. They are providing entertainment.
