Caps fan bloodied by flying puck
Net or no net, pucks still fly into the stands at NHL arenas. And they go fast, and hit hard.
I wasn't at Sunday's Caps-Flyers game, but a puck went unusually high into Section 104 during the second period, and the result is below. Viewer discretion advised.
Cheryl Nichols of Capitals News Network, who has kindly provided me with many beautiful Caps photos in recent months, reported that paramedics and arena staffers came to attend to this fan, who walked out of the arena after several minutes. The nearby sections gave him a standing ovation and he smiled and waved. If anyone knows how to get in touch with this fan, I'd love to see how he's doing.

This happens, folks. There's a reason why the warning about flying pucks is still stated before every NHL game - because the danger is very real. A puck is a frozen chunk of vulcanized rubber, and when hit by a slapshot can clock upwards of 100 mph. It's one of those things you live with.

Being behind the goal, even on an angle such as 104, gives you a false sense of security because of the net. A puck went up into the club level a couple weeks ago, and you never expect it there. At least this guy seemed to have a good nature about it (once the semi-concussion wore off).
Sure gives new meaning to rocking the red!

The puck hit the short glass in front of 102. We couldn't figure out how it got to 104 -- it's not like it was a high shot over the net. It hit the short glass about 6 inches from the top and about 2 feet from the tall glass and had some serious English on it to make the turn up to 104. I really want to see a replay, but I don't record the games. He was pretty excited about the ovation.
