Caps rank well in national jersey sales

I mentioned last week that I was somewhat surprised by the list of leading jerseys purchased at the Caps' team store this season. (That list, in case you forgot, went Ovechkin, Backstrom, Green, Varlamov, Laich.)

For comparison's sake, the NHL provided me with the leading Caps sellers on Alex Ovechkin, you'll recall, tops that list, but it turns out the Caps have three names in the Top 25. (At last check, the Redskins had zero names in the NFL's Top 20, and the Wizards had zero names in the NBA's Top 15. Joint lesson: People in D.C. don't wear jerseys to work, and also Washington teams currently stink.)

Anyhow, after Ovechkin, the leading Caps on the national list are:

24. Semyon Varlamov
25. Nicklas Backstrom
38. Brooks Laich
39. Mike Green
62. Alexander Semin

I'm past trying to figure this out, but I guess the argument that fans have already loaded up on Green and Semin merchandise makes some sense.

Speaking of impressive stats, there are currently 85 players with at least 14 goals. Seven of them play in Washington. By comparison, the Buffalo Sabres' leading goal scorer has 14.

The way that Сёмин has been translated into western characters (and inadvertently sounds like a bodily fluid when pronounced) is probably the leading culprit for why the #28 jersey ranks so low on the best-sellers list.

International sales are probably bolstering some of these guys.

But Brooks at 38? Wow.

These figures don't even count tens of thousands of counterfeit jerseys. On any given night at Verizon, it seems like 1/3 of the Caps jerseys on display are counterfeit.

every jersey on eBay is a chinese knock off...some bad, some "Better"...

Sadly NHLshop is also selling crappy replicas...if you want it to look good, you have to pony up for the authentic...

go caps.

I'm a little shocked that varlamov is ahead of Backstrom simply because Backstrom has been in the league for awhile now and has already built himself a reputation as being a possible future Joe Thorton exept with more scoring. Varlamov had about half of last year to build his reputation.

Not surprised by the Caps strong showing. In additon to how they have caught on here in a big way, you will see more and more Caps sweaters in visiting arenas. Ovechkin ia a rock star in Canada. And the team's international flavor gives it a large following in certain European countries. I believe when he first acquired the team, Ted once said he wanted to use the internet to make it popular nation-wide and internationally. I think perhaps that has been achieved, although in a different way and timeframe than Ted envisioned originally.

@ yatesc1
I know what you mean, the way Semin is pronounced is completely incorrect and I'm suprised he hasn't bothered to fix that. Varlamov even changed the English spelling of his first name to help with correct pronounciation. Someone has a #28 jersey that reads "Jizz", I'm not sure that's a compliment to Semin!

Sad but true. Should be pronounced Syomin. Tell that to the Pens fans who come and give Semin jersey wearers a hard time. Juvenile imbeciles.

Ovechkin will be at the top of the jersey sales for years to come. What will be intresting is to see how high on the list Backstrom will be after 5 years when Backstrom develops more of a scoring edge and continues with his great passing.
