Wax museum avoids Gilbert purge
With the image of Gilbert Arenas continuing to be purged from much of the Verizon Center, I was curious about the wax Gilbert who resides just a few blocks away, at Madame Tussauds. After many requests, the museum--located at 10th and F--unveiled its Gilbert model in November of 2008, and has since brought him out to community events, including Wizards games.
"The Wizards haven't asked for him recently," noted Lisa McClure, the museum's senior marketing and trade sales manager.
But McClure told me the museum has continued displaying the wax Gilbert, hasn't considered pulling him off the floor and hasn't noticed visitors behaving any differently toward Wax Gil. Or, for that matter, toward one of his roommates in the sports area, Tiger Woods.
"We haven't seen anybody act maliciously," she told me. "They think it's cool to be able to golf with Tiger Woods and have their picture taken with Gilbert."
The other gentlemen in the room include Babe Ruth, Evander Holyfield and Jesse Owens. Thankfully, none have encountered recent scandal. Anyhow, Gilbert might be gone from 7th and F, but he'll have a home at Madame Tussauds for the indefinite future.
"He's a figure that's going to be here for a while," McClure told me. "He was a requested figure for Washington, D.C., and that's how we decide to put them in. it has nothing to do with his current challenges."
