PTI does Caps Stanley Cup odds

Here's how you know the Caps are becoming a big deal: Tony Kornheiser discusses them on national television without using the phrase "choking dogs."

"Odds the Caps win the Cup" appeared during PTI's oddsmakers segment Wednesday afternoon. Wilbon put the odds at 49 percent. Kornheiser chose 60 percent. Those aren't bad odds. Since you have to be an Insider to watch the above clip, here's what they said.

"They've got the most points in the NHL, they've got an 11 game winning streak and they've got the most exciting offensive player in the league in Alex Ovechkin," Kornheiser began. "But this always comes down to a goalie. And if the guy Varlamov, or however you pronounce that, who was in the playoffs last year, if he's healthy I like their chances. If Theodore is in the nets, I like them not quite as much, but I still like them. Watch this Reali, 60 percent."

"Tony, the No. 1 seeds in the NHL lose all the time in the early rounds of the playoffs," Wilbon responded. "All the time. I mean, it's like the kiss of death to be the No. 1 seed. I'm worried about my Blackhawks--the No. 1 seed in the West potentially--drawing Detroit in the 8 spot. Same with the Capitals, they could get a bad match-up in that first round and lose. I would love to see the Capitals and the Blackhawks in the Finals. I'm going to go 49 percent the Capitals will win it all."

We all know that the Caps have a 50-50 shot. Everything is a 50-50 shot.

This caused me to do some research, it's kind of interesting. This is over the last 10 Cup Playoffs...

- The #1 overall team in the league has won 4 times (40%).

- The #1 team in their conference has won 5 times (50%)

- The next closest are 2 seed in conference (2 times) and 4 seed in conference (2 times). No other seed has won the cup in the last 10 seasons that were played.

- Every single time the #1 overall team has made it to the Cup Finals, they have won.

- The number 1 and 2 seed in a conference have made the finals equal times (6 times each), next closest is 4th with 3.

-Interestingly, the 5 seeded team in a conference has never made it to the finals in the last 10 seasons.

Who gives a crap what these two blowhards have to say? They probably haven't watched a full Caps game between them all year.

Also, professionals should probably look up how to pronounce things related to their jobs before talking about them. Jerk.

I'd really prefer it if these guys just continue to ignore the fact that hockey even exists.

Uhhhhh, apparently you give enough of a crap about what they have to say to write a comment on a blog post about them ...

Wilbon doesn't know hockey. It's a white thing, he wouldn't understand.

i have to agree that Kornheiser has probably never watched a hockey game all year - although he never misses american idol. My guess is Wilbon has watched the caps play maybe 2 or 3 times. There opinions on this is pretty meaningless.

It's not so much what they say, but the fact that they are talking about the Caps and Ovi in popular culture.

This segment is light but lots of locals listen and now they may watch to see what the Caps and Ovi news is all about.

And once they start watching it's hard to stop--especially with such great highlight goals like Ovi's left-handed, sharp-angled shot to put the puck in the top right side of the net while holding off the defender with his right arm and shoulder to score his 500th point.

Ovi knows how to score the big ones that get the fan's and the team's blood pumping.

Is the world ending tomorrow a 50/50 shot?

Go back to school.
