Greenberg: Vasquez is ACC player of the year

(By Justin Cook - AP)

Seth Greenberg got a good look at Greivis Vasquez Saturday night, when the Maryland guard scored a career-high 41 points in the Terps' double-overtime win. That was enough for Virginia Tech's coach to anoint Vasquez the ACC's player of the year.

"He made some big shots," Greenberg said during this week's episode of Tech Talk, as heard on ESPN 980. "He's really good. To me, he's the player of the year in the conference, and here's how I look at it. They're whatever they are; if you put Scheyer on Maryland's team, do they have the same record? Because everyone's saying Scheyer's the player of the year. So if you put Scheyer on Maryland's team, what would Maryland's record be, all right? If you put Vasquez on Duke's team, what would their record be?...

"I mean, he's playing at a high level," Greenberg concluded. "I mean, it's easy not to like him, because he's a little wacko, but he's a really good player."

Works for me. And it turns out this has been something of a conversation piece this week, so here's more on Greivis, and the Terps.

* Here's an argument in favor of Greivis for POY at Mister Irrelevant:

Basically, there isn't a game where you said, "Wow, Scheyer won that game for Duke." However, it's safe to say that Vasquez almost single-handedly won the VT game (33 points in second half/OT), UVA (25 in first half) and UNC (26 and 11 assists).

* And a Duke fan's rebuttal, with the conclusion that "Scheyer will be ACC Player of the Year because he's a white guard, and because it's a lifetime achievement award and because no one likes Vasquez."

* Some history from D1scoure's Patrick Stevens: Vasquez has four player of the week year awards this season. He becomes the 13th player to accomplish that feat. Ten of the previous 12 won the league's POY award.

* Coach K, on Greivis, via Terps Insider:

"I admire him, and I really like him a lot. He's had a great, great year and an amazing career at Maryland, one of the best careers anyone's ever had at that great school. I mean, and Maryland's had so many outstanding players, but Greivis is definitely one of them."

* Speaking of, Andy Pollin, writing a few weeks ago, calls Vasquez "something of a hoops Tim Tebow:"

You can debate all you want where in the top 10 Vasquez belongs...but short of Len Bias as a senior, no one has been more exciting to watch. He's left it all on the court and we probably won't fully appreciate it until after he's gone.

Pollin also goes over the other candidates for best player in Terps history.

* I don't have the audio, but Hubert Davis was asked Monday night to pick one player who could lead his team on a deep NCAA tournament run, and he selected Vasquez.

* Coach K doesn't consider Maryland to be a rivalry game, via Tracking the Terps:

"I don't look at any of our games in the ACC as rivalry games. That would not be respectful of Virginia, N.C. State, Wake Forest (and others). We treat every game in the conference the same."

* In a huge surprise, Gary Williams is still a huge ACC supporter.

"If you look at the last 20 years, the ACC has won more NCAA games and more national championships than any other league," he said on the Junkies Tuesday morning. "And I think there becomes kind of a bias against the ACC. Any time there's a way to jump on the ACC--and with Carolina being down this year, maybe that gives them the reason to do that."

* And in another huge surprise, Williams isn't willing to say the program is back, because it never went anywhere.

"We win a national championship, and that's what you're compared to," he said, when E.B. said he was back to having Terps watch parties. "Just remember this stat, since 2004, that's the year we won the ACC tournament, we've won the third-most games in the league. But if you listen to some people around here, it's like we've been horrible. We've won the third-most games. But see, that's not good enough for you guys to have parties. I mean, the two teams that are ahead of us are two teams that are probably the top five percent in the country. But see, people don't look at it that way, that we didn't win a national championship again since 2002, that's how people look at it."

* And lastly, even though you might have seen Greivis go off against Virginia Tech, you didn't really know what you were watching. Trust me on this one.

"You watch a game, you see Greivis Vasquez get 41 points, but do you see all the other things around it?" Greenberg asked during his show. "Why we're matching up and why we're blitzing this ball screen and why are we doubling this guy and why are we not doubling the post and what are we doing in defensive transition? You know, it's easy to have suggestions if you don't understand, really understand the complexity of what's going on."

Quick correction: You mean Vasquez has won 4 Player of the Week honors, right?

Posted by: Joran | March 2, 2010 4:39 PM | Report abuse

Vasquez "showed a good a attitude about it"??!?!?!?!? hahahah, im a huge MD supporter and can hardly watch this disgrace of a person play for the Terps. He is constantly talking crap (to home and away fans), and he is average player and below average person. He's a selfish gunner jerk, that Gary has absolutely no control over. I cannot wait for him to leave. Late 2nd round draft pick, wont make and nba roster. Adios Amigo!!!

PS...my friends and I cannot wait to go support the Terps at Comcast in the next home game, and heckle the hell out of Vasquez for being such a dork...hopefully he will give us the bird. Classless.

It's not nearly excused by Vasquez being a discredit to UMd, and a perfect example (along with Gilchrist) of why Gary Williams' recruiting ability began and ended with (the sainted) Juan Dixon.

Vasquez is too much of a self-absorbed punk to merit even the courtesy of homerism.

If you're going to carry yourself as Vasquez has for almost 4 years, then expect to see signs much worse than this one.

Vasquez has a filthy reputation on his OWN campus. Is it really that surprising that a fan of a rival would call attention to this? C'man Man, the guy has brought nothing but negative attention to the university - AND NOT BECAUSE HE IS FROM S.A. but because he is classless, self-absorbed ahole.

painfully, for the 4th year in a row, Greivis Vasquez is selfishly using UMD for an NBA tryout – according to the scouts, a league he has absolutely no chance to make.

As long as Greivis Vasquez is convinced that he is even 50% as good as he thinks, and remains the self-proclaimed leader of this “team”, they are going nowhere. Why is it that the pro scouts and most fans are the only ones who realize that Vasquez is a mediocre athlete and therefore little potential? It is truly unfathomable that a coach as great as GW has somehow been deceived by this kid for four years now. GW and several announcers always say that he is a good leader and brings a lot of energy! Since when does leadership equate to taking the most shots, making the most turnovers, and talking the most sh*# to the crowd/opposing players? And since when did GW’s teams ever lack energy?

Listen, if Vasquez wasn't the worst defender on the team, we would be willing to cut him some a lot of slack for all of the above. But for the 4th year in a row, Vasquez is not moving his feet on defense and is desperately reaching as opponents cut right by him into the lane.

Get ready for the 4th (but thankfully) final wasted season at the hands of Greivis “look at me” Vasquez.

Noooooooooooooooooooooo!

The Terps play better basketball and are a better team when grevis is not on the floor, I was hoping he would never be able to sabotage the terps again.

(More on the announcement Greivis was returning for his senior year)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. That really SUX. Was really hoping the kid would get some shotty advice from a inexperienced greedy agent looking to get paid. I kinda feel badly for the kid, the only guy who thinks he's got any skillz is Greivis Vasquez. If GW puts him at 2-guard, the team will be just over .500. If he lets him run the PT, well, heres to another year of Turnovers, ball-hogging, unfathomable arrogance, and a sub .500 record.

Greivis, I know you read this blog and this is laying it on pretty thick here, but this is just to remind you of all the other positives if you stay next year:

You can be first team All ACC next season if you come back.

You can be ACC player of the year.

You can win an ACC championship.

You can go to the sweet 16 and maybe more.

You can set career records next year at MD and go down as one of the greatest Maryland Terrapins of all time.

Barno ("Garo") strikes again!

Actually, my posts from earlier this year were accurate. The one's from last year were dead wrong. He proved all of his detractors, me included, wrong. After a rough start he has had a magnificent year and led us places we wouldn't be close to without him. Truly an alltime Maryland great. He may not win the vote for POY, but he is POY. Greenberg's comment about how the Terps and Duke would do if they switched places is very insightful.

they will lose Vasquez and find themselves struggling mightily again next yr to go 8-8 ACC. Only then might Gary realize that missing NCAA's in 5 of 6 years is unacceptable & hopefully he'll know no contract extension is coming nor deserved. Gary has said himself that recruiting is NOT part of his coaching responsiblity so obviously he's out of touch. We'll always be thankful for the NC Gary, but do the right thing & step down after next year's NIT.

To be honest Maryland's tournament chances were over long before the Virginia game. They will probably die in the NIT. Next year Gary will again blame the administration, keep quoting that because he won a championship he is safe, and again fail to make the tournament. Thank you Lady Terps for giving us something to hope for.

This was a very poor season, with mediocre players, coached by an individual whose ego far exceeds his abilities; not to mention the boorishness of fans (and even some players), the continuing discord with University administration, the recruiting inadequacies, the horrendous academic performance/graduation rates, and the aggregate, seriously adverse impact Williams currently has on the University of Maryland's stature. He is the catalyst that is making Maryland a "laughing stock" among reputable universities.

it's laughable to think that anyone who watches terps games thinks that this team is of the same caliber as the rest of the league. They don't have the pieces (players) to compete in the acc right now. they lost to morgan state at home, and i'f i'm not a fan i don't know why i watched the entire debacle. I also find it amusing that Poopy would want the re-posting of anti-Vasquez/anti-Gary comments to stop, seeing as Poopy was one of the main anti-Vasquez/Gary guys on these blogs not so long ago. As if you are some kind of objective observer here Poopy.

I could not care less Poopy. I know this is hard for you to understand, but I don't get worked up when people quote my optimistic predictions when our teams don't live up to them.

But it's hilarious to me how worked up you get when I quote yours and anyone else's bashing of our legendary coach and best player. Like I said, it's amusing.

People trashed Gary and demanded he be booted from the school. People trashed Greivis and hoped he would turn pro bc they hated him so much. Now, those VERY SAME PEOPLE are back on the Terps bandwagon and want everyone to forget the nasty things they said about Gary, Greivis, and the Terps.

Well, sorry, that's not going to happen.

And Elisabeth, I don't think I'm making Md look small time at all. In fact, I think it's the fools who wrote those nasty things about Gary and the boys that were the ones that made us look small time. Just my 2 cents...
