Boudreau's reaction to the too-many-men call
For the second straight game, the Caps were whistled for too-many-men-on-the-ice Friday night, a penalty that's proved deadly across the NHL this month. This one came at the very end of regulation, when Semyon Varlamov tried to leave the net, then saw the puck coming and turned back, leaving Eric Fehr in an uncomfortable purgatory. That turned what would have been a 6-on-5 empty net situation into a 5-on-5 empty net situation, which sort of negates the advantage of the empty net.
Bruce Boudreau, as you can see in the above clip, didn't appear too pleased with his players after the call was made. After the game, though, in a press conference full of clipped and pointed remarks, he didn't spout off about that one.
"[Varlamov] was coming and obviously he saw the puck," Boudreau said. "He didn't see Eric Fehr going on the ice, so he thought he had to get back. And it was probably more of a communication problem than anything else. I mean, you can't blame him."
At least publicly, Boudreau also didn't go crazy about the six-man call in Game 4, when Alex Semin seemed to want off, and again Eric Fehr was caught coming on before a Russian had exited.
"If you look at the play, Semin came to the bench, and was sort of waving for Eric, because Eric was up for him," Boudreau said then. "And Eric went on, assuming that Semin was gonna come off, but then he just stood there. And then the puck came to him, so he decided to keep playing, not knowing that Eric had come on the ice. So it was probably a communication thing at that point that we were yelling at, and he wasn't getting."
This would be a good thing to leave behind in Round 1.
