Tom Sietsema reviews two Strasburgers
That the Strasburger phenomenon was predictable doesn't make it any less tremendous. At least four D.C. area restaurants are offering variations on the burger, and at least three of them have already been reviewed on the Internet: the BGR version (by DCist, Lindsay Czarniak and CSN Washington), the Tortilla Coast version (by News Channel 8) and the Glory Days version (by Mr. and Mrs. Mottram).
Comes now WaPo food critic Tom Sietsema, who samples both the Glory Days and BGR burgers in his latest episode of TV Dinners. His verdict: Glory Days gets a double with an error on top, I believe, while BGR gets a grand slam. Would have preferred a K looking, given the theme, but whatever.
Strasburgers also were mentioned in the SI cover story, which is now online and which makes at least two uses of the word Strasmas:
MASN, Washington's regional TV network, reported that ratings for the game, played on the same night as Game 3 of the NBA Finals, were three times higher than those for the Nats' previous top-rated broadcast. And at least four D.C. restaurants began selling Strasburgers. Now available at the Burger Joint in DuPont Circle: a hot dog atop a burger smothered in cheddar cheese, in honor of Strasburg's pro debut with the Phoenix Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League in 2009.
Virtually overnight, Strasburg became a national celebrity. The Hall of Fame asked for his cap and a game ball from the first outing. Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell gushed on the Senate floor, "I was there and had a chance to see Strasburg. There was literally electricity in the air." Bob Costas, who called the game for the MLB Network, proclaimed it one of the 10 most memorable sporting events he'd covered.
The SI writer, Albert Chen, also noted that Strasburg's debut "gave a city with a spotty sports history one of its greatest moments." Clearly, he'd forgotten about the 2001 NBA All-Star game.
