FiOS adds MASN2 in HD

Back during the first day of Strasmas, the issue of FiOS not having MASN2 in HD was a big thing 'round D.C. (See posts here and here and here.) FiOS subscribers had access to MASN in HD, and to MASN and MASN2 in standard-def, but Strasburg's start was decidedly normal definition.

Two separate Verizon PR folks told two separate Post reporters back then that the provider was looking to add MASN2 in high-def, and this week the time came.

"Many of you have asked when MASN2 would become available in HD on FiOS TV," a Verizon spokeswoman wrote in an online forum. "Well, the time is now. Whether you're rooting for the Nationals or the Orioles, or if you're looking forward to seeing the Ravens in high def, you'll now get it all on FiOS in HD."

FiOS1 HD will launch on Friday, in time for Stephen Strasburg's start that night against the Marlins. For now, this new FiOS1 HD station -- 501 -- is available only in the Washington area, but the posting says the provider is working on a solution to get MASN2 HD for others outside that footprint.

MASN also put a release about this news on its Web site.

"We are pleased that Verizon has launched MASN2 HD in Washington," a MASN spokesman e-mailed me. "Their customers will soon see how Strasburg's heater and the Elvis wig both shine brighter in high-def."

Now the only D.C.-area residents who are shut out of MASN2 in HD should be Dish Network folks, if I'm not mistaken.

(I will say, however, that after getting a torrent of e-mailed questions about the issue right around the time of Strasburg's debut, I'm not sure I've heard from a single reader since.)

(And in more MASN news, here's the Bob (Carpenter) and Rob (Dibble) Drinking Game, if you're so inclined.)

I called Verizon yesterday and got a quote that Cox matched, so I'm staying put for now. The Dish Network guys will have to console themselves with the fact that they have the best porn options.

Help me pass the word to DISH customers. I emailed DISH regarding the fact that both MASN channels are non-HD, and they said that not enough requests for MASN HD have been submitted.

Does this also mean that Capitals games broadcast on FIOS 1 will be in HD in the future?

Anne Arundel County and Howard County are still left in the dark. Though much of those counties align closer with Baltimore, I think they can both still be considered DC area...and we are still in the dark.

This move is only covering 70% of the DC area Fios subscribers...another 30% of us are still waiting....

Why is their even a MASN1 and MASN2? Instead, why not have a Nats MASN and an Orioles MASN. Cable companies in Virginia can focus exclusively on Nats MASN. Cable companies in Baltimore can focus exclusively on Oriole's MASN. Cable companies on the tweener territories can include both. No one would ever have to wonder which channel their team is on.
