Gilbert chooses No. 9

Well, that mystery didn't last long. The Wizards' Web site is currently listing Gilbert as No. 9. A basketball source had previously told The Post's Michael Lee that Gilbert would be 9, and the team has confirmed the switch.

Gilbert had apparently also considered No. 13, paying tribute to date of his mother's death. Kyle Weidie reported the same on Truth About It. It's unclear what significance 9 might have.

The newest complication is that Yi Jianlian wore the No. 9 for the Nets; he is now listed on the Wizards' team roster as "N/A," the only player without a number. Yi has a different number for the Chinese national team, but that's No. 11, the retired number of Elvin Hayes that John Wall was unable to acquire.

As for 9....nine lives? Nine millimeter? (That's a joke.) The Route 29 Colesville Road combination? The apartment he once lived in?The most recent team media guide I have lists only three players who have worn that number: Jim Chones, Darius Songaila and Dave Stallworth.

I would guess 9 was chosen because it's 6 (so, you-know-who) upside down.

But the Jim Chones reference is awesome - he was "compensation" for letting the Lakers sign Miiitch Kup . . .Chak (I miss the great Marv Brooks).

Number of guns: 4; Jersey number: 9; Agent 0: gone; Marketing opportunities forcing those who already have a 0 jersey, limitless..........Good Luck Ted!

9 is the number of years he's been in the league.

Dan, your nine millimeter quirk is another example of your desire to deal with personal feelings instead of facts when it comes to Arenas. Please get it through your skull that Arenas is wanted by fans (unlike you), his coach, his general manager, and more importantly his owner. Move on, or move over and allow someone else tow write something positve about my team- the Wizards. Gilbert and the Wizards will shock many with their inspired plav in 2010-2011. FYI Gil will have his best year in the scoring collumn. Count on it...

I agree that was stupid Dan.

Personally, the 9mm joke was hilarious to me. I bet if Gil were reading this, he'd laugh too. How quick you fools forget, he was on the court JOKING about in Philly before he got suspended. I'm as conservative as they come, and that was funny.

Since Agent 0 is no more, I actually think his new nickname should now be 9mm.

Whatevah... not like I'm gonna waste another dime on him, his jersey or whatevah.

However, if Ted Leonsis really wants to cash in on the jersey and related merchandise sales, he might want to think about doing another team "rebranding" along the lines of the recent switch of the Caps sweaters... with new logos, colors and attitudes.

Have never figured out why the hometown team should be named the Wizards... particularly when there has never been anything magical or wizardous about their style of play or association with our nation's capital city.

How about the renaming the team the Washington Monuments... especially given that we already have the "Great Wall of Chinatown." That would imply a team of considerable, stature, strength, maturity and wholesome American values like respect, honor and dignity.

We also give us yet another reason to dump the immature asswipe GA and his overpriced salary package... and start anew with a new slate of players named Lincoln, Washington, Roosevelt and Jefferson... maybe even a Japanese import we could nickname the "Iwo Jamma" Monument.

9 is for 9MM

I like it! Now if we can just change the name back to the Bullets!

Maybe he's been listening to World Cup on XM and has been impressed by Giorgio Chinaglia.

Still, put him and Fat Albert on the first bus to nowhere.

Obviously 9 is his tribute to our most popular athlete ever- Sonny Jurgenson.

I could understand changing his number if he was changing teams/changing his identity (that is, for example, from being a Wizard to being a Cavalier or a Bull). But it's not as if he's doing changing anything that his old number relates to.

People aren't going around saying, "Yeah, that old number Zero; sure got hurt a lot; that Zero numbered player made some poor judgmetn choices brining the guns to the areana." They say "Gil did this...or Arenas did that." And Gil...or Arenas...is still here. Better to keep the same number and say "What I'm changing is not my number - a marketing ploy - what I'm changing is the way I've conducted myself."

world cup. 9 is the number the primary scorer wears (the playmaker wears 10).

He should have chosen 99. He could have been Agent 99! (Missed it by that much!)

Let it be a lesson to not play with guns.

It is indisputable that Gil had several excellent seasons here. Hope that if he is not dealt he has a great year with the Wiz!

Posted by: thebone | July 2, 2010 5:07 PM | Report abuse

its not NINE....its NIEN....like what he has contributed to the team in the last 3 years - absolutely nothing.

You would think the guy would want to reestablish himself in the elite of the league because all he is now is a used to be, wanna be....

Maybe the 9 stands for 200(9)as the year he f**ked up seriously.

There isn't a bigger Gilbert Arenas supporter outside his friends/family than this guy right here and I thought the 9 mm line was pretty good. Gil is going to have to deal with these wise cracks for about a year or so, then people will slowly but surely start to put the gun incident out of their minds. Kobe Bryant was charged with rape and it was a huge deal for a year or two, but now you never hear a peep about it. Remember: the public has a very short memory...

Posted by: Barno1 | July 5, 2010 10:29 PM | Report abuse

I laughed when I read the comment by Dan about the 9mm, and like others, I am sure if Gil read it he would too! And for the guy thinking Gil has 9 for an IQ, you gotta be kidding! Anyone smart enough to take on the FO and come out with a $111 million contract with no agent is far from an idiot.

Granted he went too far with his locker room nonsense, but in this country you pay for your crimes/transgressions and move on. Why can't people do the same? Build a bridge and get over it! He's still on the team!

If anything, in the past, when the man had a chip on his shoulder, he killed (excuse the pun) other teams with his shots! I look for him to have that same chip this year, with a better man (Wall) to get him the ball! Stay tuned!!

Wizards should definitely play the Beatles Revolution 9 from the White Album "Number 9 ... Number 9 ... Number 9" when Gilbert is announced.
