Haynesworth is D.C.'s top-earning athlete

Albert Haynesworth may not have been Washington's most popular athlete over the last 12 months. That honor would likely go to Alex Ovechkin, or possibly Stephen Strasburg, with Tony Romo, several dozen Little League bench warmers and the entire roster of the South Korean badminton team all finishing ahead of Haynesworth in the polling.

But say this for Haynesworth; he apparently earned more than any other D.C. athlete over the past 12 months. According to Sports Illustrated's Fabulous 50, which generates page views in easy list format ranks the top 50-earning American athletes based on salary, winnings, endorsements and appearance fees, Haynesworth will bank $24,750,000 in 2010, making him the 20th-best paid U.S. athlete, the sixth-best paid NFLer, and the second-highest non-quarterback in the NFL, behind only Terrell Suggs.

The only other Washington athlete who registered in the top 50 was DeAngelo Hall, who will make $18,575,000 this year. Hall, for the record, ranks somewhere above Haynesworth and the badminton team but below Ovechkin and Strasburg in local popularity. Last year, no Washington athletes made the list.

(The 2010 top five: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Floyd Mayweather, LeBron James and Alex Rodriguez. Come to think of it, the members of this controversial quintet are all probably more popular than Haynesworth, too.)

I appreciate your blogs but do you have to make us all dumber by crossing out words in the bodies of your paragraphs? WTF is that?

@floundermail - Personally, I find it amusing as long as it isn't overused.

All I can say is Haynesworth better start earning that big paycheck of his... or H'ain't worth it.

If the article had said AH92 is Washington's "highest paid" athlete, it might be true. But AH92 has yet to "earn" even half of what he has been paid. Rather, all he has really managed to do is take the money, but offer little if anything in exchange for it.

No mention of Darrius Heyward-Bey coming in at #28 ahead of the likes of Jeff Gordon, Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard, Mark Teixeira, and Julius Peppers. Crazy! The NFL Draft top picks and their salaries need to be fixed!

DUH !! Who in the world would not know that? The man got 21 Million with one check! What are you trying to do get the man robbed? Let the man be and he just might come to camp ready to play!! DUH!!

I live in the Nashville area. I grew up in the DC area, and still have my Redskins' season tickets. I don't have anything to sue Albert over. Kind of wish I did, but probably not. So Big Al, how 'bout a loan?

Earned? I don't dispute that Fat Albert seems to have made more money than any other DC athlete, but I DO dispute that he has earned it.

It's because Haynesworth gets paid by the pound....certainly not by the sack.(Take that how you wish)

Fat Albert should have been wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun when he inked that deal.

This is why the Redskins are the biggest joke in the NFL. Shanahan is the new Zorn and Allen is the new Cerrato. What the team needs in a new Snyder.

Sorry Ralph Zero, what we need is a new Jack Kent Cooke!
