Redskins will wear burgundy jerseys at home in 2010

(AP archives photos)

Someone ratchet up the Redskins gold pants alert level from "gold" to "really really gold." A Cowboys official has confirmed to me that Dallas will be wearing white tops in FedEx Field on Sept. 12. That means the Redskins will be wearing burgundy tops. Throw in some gold pants, and the above magic could be recreated.

UPDATE: WJLA's Tim Brant also reported this week that the Redskins will be in burgundy jerseys at home all season.

"Usually, Washington wears its white jerseys at home but new coach Mike Shanahan is changing that," DallasCowboys.com's Nick Eatman wrote on the True Blue blog, via Extreme Skins. "So the Sept. 12 opener will see the Redskins wear their reds."

Reds? Anyhow, the Cowboys official I spoke with confirmed that the Cowboys will be in white for the opener, and said that uniform choices were due to the league on June 1.

If you recall, back in May, GM Bruce Allen started the gold alert when he talked about staring at a pair of gold pants in his office. Soon, Redskins fans were making mock-ups of what that might look like in the modern age.

Earlier this month, Allen declined to provide any more details and suggested the final decision had not yet been made. By then, the Redskins store at FedEx Field was already selling t-shirts featuring the gold pants.

And since I accidentally stumbled upon this, here's vintage John Riggins.

So how is it ever before or after Labor Day if our calendar year is a circle? This has always confused the crap out of me.

Unless you use a new year as the start/end of a cycle.

I assume that dates between September 6th and December 30th are considered AFTER Labor day. Likewise, January 1 through the first monday of September is BEFORE Labor day.

Kudos to us for ruining a good joke!

There's a whole lot of Cooley in that picture of Riggo, y'know?

That Riggo pic is AWESOME by the way

You might note that with the Caps, Nats, and now with the Skins returning to red at home, its really become the standard home color around town. Maybe we can cheer "Bring the Burgundy" too?

Watch out Dirk Diggler.

Burgundy (Jerseys) and Gold (Pants) is the way to go. BY all means, avoid the ALL White or ALL Red.

Posted by: NAT1971 | August 26, 2010 6:28 PM | Report abuse

Shanahan better hope the burgundy jerseys at home work out as a lot of fans have still never forgiven Marty Schottenheimer for having the Redskins wear burgundy at home all season, especially against Dallas...

Since the team is going to stink anyway -- or, at best, be mediocre -- by all means, let's talk uniforms!

Right off the bat Shanahan and Allen show their ignorance of the Redskins-Cowboys rivalry.

Back in the good old days, Washington always wore their white jerseys for home Cowboys games. This was because the Cowboys hated wearing their blue jerseys; they felt blue was bad luck for them. This is why the Cowboys wore -- and still do wear -- white at home.

But why should I expect the son of George Allen to know that?

Let's go, Maroon and Black!

Posted by: noslok | August 26, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Well.... I hope their wearing red by the end of the game.

Um, Dan . . .I think that's the Rams in the picture at the top of the article.

Also, it was Vince Lombardi who designed the gold helmets with the red R logo. George Allen designed the current version of the Redskins helmet.

This is what, 1970? What's great is you got your starting QB Sonny Jurgensen holding for FG's and should be Hall of Famer Chris Hanburger blocking. Different era then. Great pic!

Posted by: bbride1 | August 26, 2010 9:14 PM | Report abuse

I guess you didn't say anything about the helmets. I was responding to a linked article. My bad . . .

Posted by: jgg11 | August 26, 2010 9:16 PM | Report abuse

. . .and number 39 is Kermit Alexander. Yeah, it's the Rams.

Posted by: jgg11 | August 26, 2010 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Downside: It used to be that you only had burgundy against Dallas and Philly on the road, which made those stand-out games.

KETCHUP and MUSTARD. that's all I'm saying, just get the terminology straight.

Posted by: spam21 | August 27, 2010 12:13 AM | Report abuse

This is more than fine to me. But the key is the old Gold pants. That's what made the uniform uniquely Redskins. Probably just me, but it took many years for me to get over the elimination of the Gold pants
for a bland new look. It was never an improvement, just ordinary looking.

can they ditch those puke uni's and get that creepy bob marley logo off the helmet? it's 2010 for crying out loud. they will look and play like circus clowns with a gimpy mcchicken and portis not being able to run. 40 yrds. in under 5 sec. same ole danny boy and his fantasy football shannanigans. The JETS are going to work grossman like a speed bag.

I agree, enough with the red on red and white on white. If they are going to wear red at home, they better be wearing gold pants.

I'm going to agree with CapsNut. The Redskins should wear the white jersey's with the red pants at home. For one, those uniforms look the best, second with the visiting team having to wear their dark jerseys you get a nice contrast in colors. Every game now is going to be boring because the skins are always going to be wearing burgandy and the road team is always going to be in white. Plus, the three super bowl wins came with the white on burgandy combo. Wake up, Bruce!!!!! This isn't the over the hill gang era!!!!!!

Posted by: jcreech1 | August 27, 2010 9:22 AM | Report abuse

Even with gold pants, "the above magic" cannot be re-created because there aren't any straight-on placekickers in the NFL these days.

(Note also how just about every team used to have the quarterback as the holder. Those days are long gone as well.)

Posted by: 1995hoo | August 27, 2010 10:12 AM | Report abuse

@jcreech1: you really think that "every game now is going to be boring because the skins are always going to be wearing burgandy and the road team is always going to be in white"? C'mon, the color of the jerseys doesn't make a game "boring" or "exciting" - its the people wearing those jerseys.

Personally, I don't care what color the Skins wear at home versus on the road, just as long as the TOP AND THE PANTS ARE DIFFERENT COLORS. No more of this white-on-white and burgandy-on-burgandy crap. That is just horrendous.

This is actually FALSE. The Skins wore burgundy at home for every opponent including Dallas until 1981. At that point they switched to the white at home and it is a lore that Dallas doesn't like to wear the Blue.

Hey guys.. The Redskins colors are BURGUNDY and Gold. Stop referencing RED.

Well I don't think they will be wearing gold pants, I have the new Madden and the Burgendy Jersey's have white pants. I think this is a much to do about nothing!

I wonder if noslok knows that we beat Dallas for the NFC Championship on New Year's Eve 1972 at RFK with the Cowpukes wearing white.....thanks to the poster who stated that we started wearing white with Gibbs I in 1981 vs. Dallas. Different era guys....I personally would like to see the plum like Burgundy with old Gold pants (a la 1960s), with the Spear helmet brought back...
