DeAngelo Hall calls into radio station to defend himself

(By Jonathan Newton - TWP)

It wasn't easy to find things to complain about the day after the Redskins crushed the Bills last weekend. Donovan McNabb was solid. Rex Grossman looked great. Albert Haynesworth seemed to play well. The special teams scored. No one's car got set on fire in the parking lot.

And yet sports-talk radio demands at least some level of unhappiness, so a caller into 106.7 The Fan's Kevin and Rock Show complained about the way DeAngelo Hall stepped out of bounds after his first-quarter interception.

"Oh my God, DeAngelo Hall, can you please not skip out of bounds when you've just got to hit a quarterback?" requested John the Caller. "For [bleep's] sake, he had blockers in front of him and he ran out of bounds and started dancing. It's like, dude, you're not in the end zone yet."

Well, it may have been lazy sports-talk on a Saturday afternoon, but DeAngelo Hall answers his critics. So the cornerback called in the listener-response line in time for the next segment.

"I can't win, I can't win it seems like," Hall said. "It's the preseason, man. I ain't out there trying to kill nobody, hopefully nobody's out there trying to kill me. I wasn't even worried about the quarterback, that was the least of my concerns. I had Lee Evans coming up smoking me from behind, so I was just like man let me get out of bounds before this dude tries to knock my shoulder out or something.

"It ain't had nothing to do with the quarterback. I'd have ran him over if I had the chance. I kind of look over my shoulder a little bit and I see Lee Evans just smoking. Normally receivers kind of shut it down, but that dude was coming up on me fast. I wanted to cut back, but I was like man, if I cut back and try to keep going, I think this dude's gonna catch me, so I just slid out of bounds and was like forget it, we'll take it."

Obviously there's no point in getting injured returning an interception in the preseason. Just as obviously, the world would be a better place if every local athlete called up every local sports talker every time he or she was criticized. As long as they had him, Kevin and Rock asked Hall a few questions, leading the corner to use the word "vanilla" three times in no more than a minute.

"I think a lot of guys were a little bit disappointed in the gameplan, because we just went out there and played vanilla, we went out there and played man the whole game," he said. "There were a couple times when they were running a lot of routes that kind of worked into our coverage, but we didn't want to show too much, so we just went out there and just played vanilla football. That's what I think a lot of people within the organization are so optimistic about, for us to go out there and play that vanilla brand of football and put up that many points.

"There was even a 4th-and-1 where I think in years past, we'd have jumped offside. So I'm on the sideline jumping up and down, like so that's what a coach Shanahan-coached football team looks like. I mean, it was disciplined. We stayed onside. Even Big Al. I'm telling him, like dude, you normally jump every play. I was like dude, that's what I'm talking about. So just to see that I think is real optimistic for us."

d'angelo can run out of bounds all he wants in a preseason game. kevin and rock are just sports entertainment so they will take whatever stance necessary to get callers

I don't have a problem with you running out of bounds unless there was a clear path to the end zone and you chose to skip out of bounds.

I think you got lucky though on the interception. It looked to me like you were clearly beaten had the QB and receiver went with their first moves. It was only after you got turned around that the flustered QB made a bad pass and you turned in time to step in front it. It was good to see though because I haven't seen a skins CB or S step in front of ANYTHING since Sean Taylor was back there.

If nothing else hopefully it'll build your confidence to step in front of one when it counts.

Can I get an A-MEN...And a tackler, seriously "HIT" somebody.

Posted by: WaPoLiveFan16 | August 16, 2010 12:52 PM | Report abuse

It's only matters because this donk doesn't do much hitting anyway but was the first to say 'We want to hit somebody' before the game. If this was another DB, no big deal.

Just play and shut up...then once you make the Pro Bowl or lead the league in picks, then gloat.

Hey... It's the PRE-season.. Games that don't count for anything. All we need is for someone to get hurt in a game that doesn't matter.. (Remember Portis like 3 years ago?)

I don't care about Hall running out of bounds. This isn't the NFC Championship... (We haven't come close to even sniffing that game in a decade)

That show sucks, it's the worst in DC. Go DeAngelo

Is it bad that I would rather see D. Hall make a tackle than an INT? Above all of that though is for him to just not talk, period.

"Preseason? PRESEASON?!?! Are you kidding me? Preseason?"

Posted by: dcunitedfan3 | August 16, 2010 1:31 PM | Report abuse

This has already been said but it is so shocking that people actually arguing that Hall did something horribly wrong when this one fact should shut them up easily. Portis tackles someone in the preseason and injures himself, badly! Was it against the Cowboys saving a TD? No. Was it in the NFC Championship Game? No. Was it to win the Super Bowl? No. It was in a preseason game!!! I'm sorry when did the Skins get a rack of quaility D-backs where we can be ok with risking the loss of one of them? He got an INT and stepped out of boundds because he knows the regular season is go time, don't risk too much to make morons happy in the preseason!

"I think you got lucky though on the interception."

I see it differently, I thought it was a great play. Hall covered the guy, the guy got loose and Hall recovered and picked the ball off.

I was describing that play to a friend at dinner actually. My comment to him was,"Now if Hall could only tackle as good as he can cover he would be all world."

I observed at least two tackles in the game Hall missed and he didn't try very hard on. On one he just threw out his arm and the RB kept going, the other he didn't even try on at all.

Sorry DeAngelo but when you get punked by a QB these things are bound to happen.

The man made a good play...for the person who said he was beat on the first move, thats what a blitz does. Doesn't allow the QB to find WRs because of pressure. And if he would've got hurt and Tryon or Barnes had to start the season we would've really been blown!

good explanation, DeAngelo

Hall is playing professional football not basket weaving. It is clear Hall does not have a killer instinct. You are supposed to hit and be hit. Rules of the game. He should have lowered you head and shoulders, hit the QB and tried to score. You do that whether it is preseason, regular season, post season or the Pro Bowl. Do you remember Shawn Taylor trying to kill the punter in the Pro Bowl? As long as the hit is legal, you are paid to try to kill the opponent. Hall is more into being an entertainer than a pro football player. Wuss.

I don't care about running out of bounds in a real game he would have run over anyone who was close to him--after all it is preseason. I do think his celebration AFTER the catch was NOT A BIT MUCH but not called for--afterall he DID NOT make a TD he ran out of bounds--nit picking--you bet.

I still say D'Angelo Hall is one of the only players in NFL history--along with a maybe (maybe) a few kickers/punters here and there--I could take out in a fight if I had too. I have never seen an NFL player so afraid of contact. How bout the play near the end zone where he tried, as he usually does, to punch the ball out of the Bills player rather than simply wrapping him up for the tackle? He whiffed, by the way.

When I saw that play my first comment was how nice it was to have someone in the secondary that can actually CATCH a ball! Give him a break. He made the interception and put the offense in great position. Do you think Carlos Rogers would have held on to the ball? Seriously?

DHall is the most overrated cornerback in the NFL. He actually admitted of being afraid to be hit by Lee Evans, a wide receiver. It's believable. Randle El was afraid to be hit after catching a punt, that's why he caught the ball and fell forward. Dhall is the Randle El of the defense, afraid to get hit, and that's why he doesn't tackle. Simple. Shanahan will see it soon enough.

I'll take my top corner being afraid to get blind sided on a INT return in the first preseason game. Key thing on that play was that a CB in our colors actually held on to the ball and advanced it a bit. And the offense scored off the possession.

Still, it's nice when the only thing we have to complain about is that we didn't turn an INT into a Pick-6.

Who ARE these idiots on the radio, anyways?

Posted by: shanks1 | August 16, 2010 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Way to go D Hall it's preseason who cares as long as you play hard in the regular season that's the key. That Radio show suxxxxxxxxxx and that are just trying any and all types of publicity scheme..

My bet is that Hall did not attend too many English classes - I caint blame the man, them classes were vanilla like and Lee was smoking him out of class, anyways, he aint there to kill nobody, he at the nfl level.

Who ever is mad he didn't take it to the house needs to be slapped!!

This is pre-season football. None of this matters, it's just a tune up for the real thing. We don't need guys getting banged up in a pre-season game. We need guys to stay healthy for when it really counts.

Now what would you say if he did try to take it to the house and broke a leg or got seriously hurt in the process? Then everyone would be saying "he should have went outta bounds." or "it doesn't count so he should have slid."

D. Hall, good explanation. No need to get hurt playing a game that won't get you any where close to the playoffs or SB. Stay healthy Skins.

Never gonna win a preseason championship with that attitude.

Posted by: 202character | August 16, 2010 4:28 PM | Report abuse

Sounds like a lot of you have never played the game at a higher level. This game is really fast. D. Hall is a small fast guy, they break a lot eaiser than the wide body 300 lbers. You guys are idiots if you think he should have risk his self preservation so the has-beens on talk radio wont talk bad about him.

He is right. Way to go and I dont really like the R-skins.

Same reason Brett shouldnt come back until the 8th game.

Posted by: intheknowforyou | August 16, 2010 4:37 PM | Report abuse

Agree with D Hall completely. He made the catch, gained some yards, stayed healthy for the regular season, and the offense scored off the turnover. What's wrong with that?

Posted by: SkinsfaninNebraska | August 16, 2010 4:39 PM | Report abuse

The real point here is that Hall has an awfully thin skin............... I mean, to call up about a comment on a poorly rated local weekend talk show?

Posted by: poguesmahone | August 16, 2010 5:05 PM | Report abuse

Lets remember Portis chasing a defender who intercepted a Mark Brunell pass in preseaon. Portis was never the same that year, so I tent to agree with D.Hall.

Tell`em D ! Aint no body goin to dis my D when he just picked on off! In da pre-sea no less!! Dam Haters!

Posted by: vexed50verizonnet | August 16, 2010 7:03 PM | Report abuse

the real point is that they were playing a team that will pick in the top four of the 2011 draft and that quarterback make rex grossman look like unitas in his prime. the skins get jaw jacked starters v starters the next two weeks and all this nonsense stops. if they get to 5-11, clip the rams, lions, T.C. Williams, Tampon Bay, and maybe Spingarn then let's throw a ticker tape parade. it's bums street so let's all enjoy.

Can't disagree with D, but on the other hand we have owners making us pay for these FAKE games.
