Michael Irvin on the Hogs and Russ Grimm

Michael Irvin and Russ Grimm overlapped in the NFL just for a few seasons, at the end of Grimm's career and the beginning of Irvin's. It was enough.

"I remember all of those years, watching, hearing about The Hogs," Irvin said, growling out the name. " And that picture of him [covered in blood], and the look, and they add the name to that - Russ Grimm - that scares half the league right there. You're good. You've got eight games right now. That name -- right now, you've got eight wins, and that's the truth.

"And you've heard it over and over again, everybody has always set their team by offensive lines, but none have grabbed a nickname that stuck like this, and that's an incredible thing. And it's hard, when you start talking offensive linemen, because there's no clear indications on how they do it. I've got catches, and Emmitt [Smith] has yards, and Troy [Aikman] has passes. So what sticks in your mind is that ability to move people, and actually intimidate people. That what makes them stick. They're The Hogs."

So I asked Irvin -- who's working on the NFL Network broadcast on Saturday -- whether the Hogs really intimidated people.

"Stop [messing] around," Irvin said. "Yeah, they intimidated people. You know they intimidated people."

Irvin also made the greater point: that Grimm and friends becoming the toast of Washington and the entire NFL was virtually unprecedented.

"Think about Super Bowl winning teams," Irvin said. "Cowboys, you're gonna talk about the Triplets. You go back to the 49ers, it was the passing game. You go back to the Steel Curtain defense when you talk about the Steelers. Never, ever do you talk about a team winning the Super Bowl, where the first moniker that comes up is of an offensive line. And that's what you've got with the Redskins, and that started with Russ Grimm. That's what makes this right.

"Great players, the right moniker is what adds to it, you know what I'm saying? The HOGS. I don't know any other team, I don't know any other franchise that won a Super Bowl, and the first thing you think about is the offensive line. Think about it....

"There's no way you have a great offensive line without having a guy that sets the tone for that whole unit. And the name Russ Grimm. It's the perfect name. Here come the Hogs, man, and there's Russ Grimm. That's some scary [bleep]."

Thanks Irv, now get lost. You're an annoying, self-serving, unwatchable dirtbag!

You played with a group of arrogant, self-important filth straight from the cesspool, now go back amongst your kind at the landfill where you belong!!

Grow up, iubiquity.

That was a nice bit of professional respect from a former rival.

Props Mike. That was a very classy tribute to a rival.

The triplets!!! They were the antithisis of the HOGS!. Triplets were about numbers and flashy plays, about the bright lights and call girls.... while the HOGS were about the 5 O'clock club and drinking beers in the "shed". I love the fact that the HOGS would not let Theismann into the club..... classic!

The triplets were good..... but the HOGS were iconic! Go HOGS!!!!

I'm sure the Hogs are bigger icons than the Triplets, who were "about" winning Super Bowls. Several of them.

The Triplets won three and the Hogs won three and went to four. So what was your point again?
