Ovechkin, Russian rap and Eminem

Alex Ovechkin's taste in locker-room music has been well, and and exhaustively, documented. It is, to put it simply, horrific.

"Nintendo game mixed with club mixed with some Russian talking," Brooks Laich offered as a description last season. "You really wonder how anybody thinks that's good music. Anybody has veto power, but he'll come right back and turn it to something else, too. The stereo is a never-ending battle in this locker room, and he's one of the major players. I would say definitely he's got the worst taste."

Well, add another curdled pawn to that chess game. The Russian rap group Afera recorded a song about Ovechkin, and Ovi met the group and exchanged gifts, and he's now promised Sovietsky Sport that he'll be bringing this track back to the team's dressing room. You can listen to it above, assuming your head is first locked into a subterranean vault.

I'll quote the two key exchanges from the interview, via the indispensable Alex Ovejtkin:

The hockey players who don't know Russian, how they perceive Russian music?

They are ok with it. Most importantly it must be melodic, rhythmic. When you play a quiet music, they don't understand because there are too many words. They start grumbling.

What music do you like the most?

In general I'm a fan of hip-hop. And I like Eminem the most. I am getting high on his music. As of the Russians, I'd note Gufan, Basta. And now it is Afera!

I'm assuming "getting high on his music" means something in Russian that it doesn't mean in English. Anyhow, there are now at least three pop-music songs about Ovechkin in existence, after The Alexander Ovechkin Song and Pummeler's "Ovechkin." Though I'm probably forgetting something. Also, I'm sick of August.

Someone should ask Brooks which of the two types of music he likes: Country, or Western? Sheesh...

Hey, it doesn't sound much worse than 90% of the junk they play at maximum decibels over the VC PA system.

As a rap enthusiast, I wonder how Ovie feels about the Dirty South genre and Purple Drank :)

Is it me or does the lyric sounds something "ovechkin, havin a havin a bit** slap?" Just wonderin'. Pretty bad music. I'd rather listen to a Jim Zorn press conference.
