CSN to produce all Wizards and Caps games in HD

Best news D.C. sports fans have heard all week. Comcast SportsNet, the local rights-holder for both the Wizards and the Caps, will produce all its regular-season games for both teams in HD this season. That means 80 games for the Wizards in the regular season, and 72 for the Caps.

(The remainder of the games will appear on exclusive national television broadcasts, and will also be produced in HD.)

What does this mean? Most importantly, it means when the Wizards and Caps play on the same night, and one of the teams is pushed to CSN+, the broadcast will still be produced in HD. This is no guarantee that your own provider will pick up the CSN+ HD feed, but I'd imagine the major local carriers will see sufficient demand to make this happen. Ask your own provider for details, and I'll be sure to provide updates as applicable.

This became something of an uncomfortable situation last year, when the Caps were great and the Wiz were stinky and yet there were still nights the Wiz got the CSN HD broadcast and the Caps were in miserable standard definition on CSN+. Caps fans were forever crying discrimination, even though the distribution between the two teams was fairly equal.

Anyhow, let those nasty squabbles be history's refuse. For both teams, all 82 games this year will be highly defined, suitable for luxurious home viewing and, when necessary, television photography.

(One note: the network will show three Wizards preseason games, though only two of those will be in HD. So one preseason game will be a reminder of the muddy days of yore.)

Trust me Dan, Caps fans will still find something to complain about...

Right, why no Caps preseason games on CSN?

That's so true. Caps fans will find SOMETHING to whine about. Wizards fans have never been vocal, even when the team was winning. The bottom line: an absolutely horrible Wizards team draws similar, if not better, ratings than a very good Caps team. It's just the way it is. CSN knows this better than anyone.

That's funny...I didn't know the Wizards had any fans.

Wizards may draw equal ratings, but we all know which fans are actually playing closer attention.

Just for the record, CSN+ was actually substandard definition. It looked like an early-era YouTube video blown up to fill the TV screen.

This is great news.

Dan,
Comments are off in the next post, so lemi just say happy new year and I'm gonna whip your butt this year like I did Mike Willbon last year in the pickems.

Does anyone know if DISH will broadcast CSN+ in HD? I ran a one-person campaign to get DISH to broadcast MASN in HD this year and it never happened...

Great News for all! Can we assume Comcast will carry CSN+ HD?

I agree with Goat74. The non HD telecast was blurry. It didn't even rank with regular non HD telecasts because it was so bad. All I can say is Thank you cheeses.

Is there an echo in here?

I hope there's also a Caps pick'em contest with you, Katie and Tarik (emiritus).
