Danny Smith's bubble gum habit

If you're watching the Redskins preseason finale on Thursday night, you might see a shot of special teams coach Danny Smith being animated. He's often animated.

And while he's being animated, you'll almost certainly see him chomping the hell out of a golf-ball sized wad of gum.

"He's got a box of gum in his office, you could probably fit an elephant in it, and he's probably gone through about half of it already," kicker Graham Gano told me during training camp.

So, how much gum? Say, in one practice session?

"I don't know a number, but it's triple-digits, easy," Smith told me.

He only uses two brands: Bazooka and Dubble Bubble. If you offered him a box of mint gum, "I wouldn't do it, I'd give it back to you," he said.

This, to me, is just absurd. I buy mint gum in jumbo variety packs from Costco and probably go through a pack every two days, but while the first five or six seconds of Dubble Bubble might be sweet chewy release, it's disgusting inside two minutes. Smith disagreed.

"It's great," he said. "I like it when it gets like rope. When it's hard, it's better."

Smith said he re-starts his wad three or four times per practice. He also does this during games, as evidenced above. He gets a big box of the stuff from Brad Berlin, the team's equipment manager, and said he's chewed a softball-sized wad before, though I'm not sure I can believe that. Fred Smoot once credited Smith with improving his own trash-talking skills, though.

"I went to Danny Smith," Smoot said in 2007, when asked how he rehabbed his broken jaw. "You know, he keeps a big box of gum, and you know, chew gum, that's what I had to do. Effectively chew gum for about two months straight....I'd probably go 5,000 chews on the left, 5,000 on the right to get everything evened out."

I asked Gano whether it was hard to communicate with a coach who's chewing 100 pieces of Bazooka.

"He just yells at us most of the time anyways," Gano joked. "He's a great coach, but he loves his bubble gum. He might just digest the stuff."
