Gilbert Arenas and Bill Cosby: a comparison
UPDATE: The beard will be cut.
Part of my mission is what's known as "accountability journalism," making sure that the important decision-makers and opinion-shapers in town are held accountable for their words, and are speaking truth and not distorted lies. I take this mission very seriously. Without the media there to watch them, sports figures could just say whatever they want, and what sort of world would we be living in then?
Which brings us to Brendan Haywood's comments last week about his former teammate, Gilbert Arenas. I'll quote from Michael Lee's account:
[Haywood] grabbed Gilbert Arenas and said, "What's up, Bill Cosby from 'Uptown Saturday Night'?"
Unable to get his bearded teammate to laugh, Haywood tried again.
"C'mon, man, you can't shave?" Haywood asked, as Arenas simply scratched his beard and cracked a smile. He held back from showing much emotion.
Well, Brendan. In this case, I think you've done a fairly accurate job of representing reality.
Of course, my own colleague -- Michael Wilbon -- has a slightly different take on the matter.
Players around the league are joking about his appearance, which for those of you of a certain age is akin to the unkempt Grady character on "Sanford and Son." Brendan Haywood said Arenas looks like Bill Cosby in "Uptown Saturday Night" which is also dead-on.
And Wilbon might be even more correct. Well done, everybody. Truth wins.
