Testudo, Ovechkin in SportsCenter commercials

Quite a week for D.C. athletes and ESPN promotional spots. First Alex Ovechkin and Semyon Varlamov went up to Bristol to tape a spot, and then Sports Business Journal's John Ourand revealed these images from Testudo's upcoming This Is SportsCenter spots.

And not a moment too soon, if you want to be honest. For the millionth time the first time, the Maryland mascot has been included in the Capital One Bowl National Mascot of the Year competition, and dude is getting trounced. It's a sort of round-robin competition between 16 national Division I mascots, and Testudo is about to lose his eighth of eight head-to-head battles. He also is last in total votes, way behind such luminaries as Old Dominion's Big Blue and Montana's Monte. This week, he's getting shelled by Cincinnati's completely uninspired Bearcat.

Stand up and support Testudo, people. He's a turtle. He needs your help.

Umm, Testudo first appeared in the Capital One Bowl Mascot competition in 2004, along with Duke Dog (JMU) and Hokie Bird (VA Tech). In fact, last year (or 2008) he did very well.

To the best of my knowledge, Testudo has been a featured contestant in the Capital One Mascot contest for years.

2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, and now 2010, just from glancing at this page. C'mon Dan, a little Google search goes a long way.

And obviously, Scott van Pelt (UMD alum) is sitting at the table with Testudo in the upcoming ESPN ads.

How the hell did ODU's mascot get there? This is their first year of college football, and they get into the mascot vote? A travesty, for sure.

yeah, testudo is in this junk pretty much every year. in 2008, he got to the finals but lost the washington st thing. I, like many maryland fans, vote way too much for this thing every year so I think we're a little tired of voting. plus, our football field is named capital one field so I have a feeling we'll be in this thing for years to come ...

Years ago I talked to one of the guys who wore the Testudo outfit. He said that the Capital One thing is rigged in that the the eventual winner is decided by outside judging and not the internet vote.

DC's always been cool w/ESPN and vice versa. Incidentally if you notice, there's another DC-area TV alum in that shot, Chris McKendry.
