Tom Green Unleashes the Fury in a Caps jersey

For several years now, Caps fans have risen to their feet late in the third period and screamed "Unleash the Fury" along with Tom Green, as the culmination of the team's late-game rally video. Saturday night, the Tom Green who screamed inside Verizon Center happened to be about 15 pounds heavier, and wearing a red Mike Green jersey. (Video below.)

How did this happen?

Well, Michael Wurman was hired as director of game entertainment and TV production last season, he immediately thought about trying to integrate Green into the team's Unleash the Fury sensation, which has produced posters and t-shirts and personalized jerseys and other bits of Fury. He reached out to Green's team, but never heard back. As the playoffs approached, Wurman sent a message through Green's Web site, and lo and behold, he soon got a phone call from Green's agent, who passed him on to Green's publicist.

It turned out the comic was coming to D.C. in the late spring, and so Wurman crafted a plan to get Green inside the building for a playoff game. Alas, the Caps were eliminated before Green's scheduled visit.

In late July, though, Green had a gig at the D.C. Improv, and so the effort was renewed, and everyone agreed this was the time. Wurman and his crew went to the Improv with the Mike Green jersey and a guitar to mimic the original scene, and within 30 minutes they had what they needed. Their version of the scene starts with a wider shot than the original, so that the Caps logo and red jersey are immediately apparent, but other than that, it's a pretty close match.
All they asked of Green was to play it coy with the media, and not give away the video before it aired, and during an interview with DCist Green complied:

You're sort of an important part of D.C. sports lore. I don't know if you know but...

Unleash the fury!

You got it. Would you ever have imagined?

I hope to come to a game this year. People have sent me videos of it on You Tube. It looks like a lot of fun. And I want people to come out to the Improv and unleash the fury [this] weekend. I actually do "unleash the fury" live in my show as it is in the movie Road Trip.

The team is still attempting to arrange an in-person Verizon Center visit from Green during the regular season, and possibly again during the playoffs. Green is from Ottawa, and someone asked whether the Senators would feel betrayed by his being so involved with the Caps.

"Hey, they should have asked me first," he said.

As for why the Caps have continued to pursue such Unleashing, I'll let Wurman explain.

"We've been asked a lot of times, even before I was here, when is Tom gonna get here, when is he gonna come to a game," he told me. "People really seem to dig it, and that's what it was supposed to do: here's a new take on something that's now a few years old. Our intention was never to change the essence of the scene, but let's make the signature moment ours."

Maybe the Devils took offense to Unleash the Fury which led to the fights shortly after. Or maybe they were just getting their a** handed to them. Either way....great game.

That is all.....carry on....

My bum is on the ship
The battleship
I hope they don't shoot the cannon in my bum
I'd shoot poo all over the place!
POO POO!!

Cause that isn't very fun
When they shoot a cannon in your bum
I like to put my bum on things
it's fun for everyone

The new Tom Green footage gives a bit of more authenticity to it. Kudos to them for getting this done.

I commend the Caps for going to all that trouble and for Tom Green being generous and helping out. But to be honest I go to all the games and I actually prefer the video with the original movie version. In the original version, there is this underlying recognition that the Green character in the clip was this humorous, clueless young college student who couldn't hurt a fly. Now removing the Green character from the movie and making him considerably older, he seems more serious as he is no longer the clueless student. Not quite the same effect. But no big deal.
