George Mason's Final Four bobbleheads

Five years ago this season, George Mason went to the Final Four. Now, granted, the Patriots haven't been back since then, but they're hardly alone. After all, George Mason has been to the Final Four more recently than Kentucky and Louisville, Syracuse and Maryland, Arizona and Illinois.

And five years is a normal enough anniversary, so many congratulations to the George Mason folks for deciding it was time for commemorative mini-bobbleheads. These beauties, honoring that team's starting five, will be given out to the first 1,000 fans at five different home games this season: Dec. 1 against George Washington (Folarin Campbell), Dec. 4 against UNC Wilmington (Tony Skinn), Jan. 15 against Georgia State (Jai Lewis), Feb. 5 against Old Dominion (Lamar Butler) and Feb. 12 against James Madison (Will Thomas). The full promotional schedule will be here.

"They're doing it to celebrate us in the Final Four, so it's good, something to keep the buzz going," said Jai Lewis, who's back in the States after playing in the Philippines last season. "We were the underdogs. We weren't expected to get in. We messed a lot of brackets up. That's gonna be one of our memories. If they want to celebrate it every year, that's just gonna keep our names alive."

In other Mason news, the school announced on Wednesday the upcoming launch of GoMason Mobile, a smartphone application that will be available later this month. The application will be free and will include live radio broadcasts of all men's basketball games and all women's home games, plus pre-game and post-game shows, stats, rosters and the rest.

That's cool, too, though I doubt the smartphone app can bobble.

I still regard that as the most amazing achievement by any local sports team ever. George Mason in the FINAL FOUR still boggles my mind.
