The Redskins go to Aruba

By Dan Steinberg

Clinton Portis has been telling reporters this week that he spent his bye week in Russia, getting massages and hanging out with dudes named Vlad, although they mostly don't believe him.

But at least some Redskins definitely went over a sea during their break. Brian Orakpo, DeAngelo Hall, Carlos Rogers, assistant coach Chris Samuels and their significant others spent part of their bye week as a group in Aruba.

"We're all family man, we're all family," said Orakpo, when I asked whether they don't see enough of each other during the work week. "We knew the whole Donovan story was gonna get crazy, so we just wanted to get away."

"We knew we needed to get away, so we had a great time over there," Samuels told me. "We went to dinner, just kind of hung out by the beach, just sat back and watched the sunset every day."

And talked Xs and Os and wild-card standings and cardiovascular endurance, right?

"We don't talk football while we're on the water," Orakpo said. "Nah, Hell no. We stay away from football....Obviously you're gonna see football in the lobbies and stuff like that, but I'm not gonna be sitting there just watching football all day. I take trips like that to kind of get away from it and come back with my mind ready to go."

"I didn't want to bring it up to the guys," said Samuels, who isn't exactly a defensive backs coach anyhow. "I know they've been through a hard season. We really just chilled and just enjoyed ourselves."

And yes, the quartet of Redskins was noticed, even in Aruba.

"Actually, there was a lot of Redskins fans," Orakpo said. "You'd be surprised how many Redskins fans are all over the place."

I didn't know Samuels was an assistant coach. Sure do wish we had him playing this year
