What was Kyle Shanahan saying on the sidelines?

By Dan Steinberg

At least two people have asked me about this moment in the Lions game, when the Fox broadcast showed a splitscreen of Kyle Shanahan and Donovan McNabb. It was during the Redskins' second-to-last drive of the first half, which resulted in a field goal, and it showed Kyle Shanahan in some level of distress.

Both of the readers suggested he was asking "What the [bloody heck] is that?" and they questioned whether any unhappiness with McNabb's handling of this situation led to his subsequent second-half benching.

Now, I love the legwork by these readers, but I have to say, that's not what my eyes are seeing. I sure don't see his lips making any "f" sounds, but I actually can't tell what Kyle's saying here. Any lip readers want to help out?

UPDATE: Suggested answers on Twitter include "Who just got in?" "What's that?" "Who is that inside?" "What the hell is that?" "Who's idea's that?" and "Who's inside?" So yeah.

he is saying "What is that?" once he realized that McNabb called a different play in the huddle than what he sent in.

It appears to me that he is saying, "what the heck is that?" It's not an unusual phrase to be uttered by a coach at any level. He certainly did not seem to be in distress. He wasn't yelling or jumping around.

Who's got the tiger? Maybe it's a route for one of the WR's or a name for a blitz they could be expecting?

Looks like "Who's asking that" Perhaps from someone in the booth. Either that or "Does anyone have Randy Moss' Cell number?"

He's def saying "Daddy, can we get JaMarcus Russell? His 2 min terminology is wonderful and he's known for his work habits and Cardio" That's been confirmed by several sources.

he's saying "good thing my dad's the coach or I would be fired at the end of this game" What head coach doesn't attend the offensive meetings for his team? Oh right a coach that wants to show that he isn't the reason for the offenses success. Whats that you say? They have no success? Oh right. Well then I'm at a loss why the head coach doesn't participate in the most important part of his job.

i think he saying its supposed to shotgun.

Posted by: dcsports4life | November 4, 2010 2:26 AM | Report abuse

I honestly think he's reacting to a defensive set the Lions unexpectedly put up on that play..He called aplay thinking a certain defense, and the Lions came with a wrinkle, and I think he's reacting to it...

Better idea: Ask the SUMBICH!!!

Posted by: highshockey | November 4, 2010 8:50 AM | Report abuse

Definitely not a "What" but a "Who", as in "Who's idea is that?" McNabb probably didn't want to do the 7-step drop read right pass that Grossman reported he later got stuck with. What is wrong with the shanahans... how can they be so stupid? What did we do to deserve all this incompetence?

I think that Native American curse for the team having an allegedly racist name is haunting the franchise!

Posted by: stwasm | November 4, 2010 9:54 AM | Report abuse

He's saying, "WTF, I should quit. This nepotism thing will never work. It's all Dan S. fault, not us Shanahans."

Posted by: why231 | November 4, 2010 9:57 AM | Report abuse

So the supposition here is, McNabb started calling his own plays in the first half which is possibly the real reason he got yanked in the second?

I like it.

Posted by: kingrob76 | November 4, 2010 10:02 AM | Report abuse

He's saying 'The moma dance', or maybe 'The moment ends'. Or maybe 'Elephant juice' or maybe 'I love you'. Whatever it is, who cares. That's not the play that cost us the game. Mr. Deangelo "I Want To Cover the Best WR" Hall, who gave up 2 TDs cost us the damn game! Cut him. Watch no one pick him up on waivers.

He looks like he says "right" or "Mike" and then says "whose idea's that?" Obviously refering to someone suggesting that they block the defense on this play.

Posted by: okelley2nd | November 4, 2010 3:41 PM | Report abuse

I distincly remember this play...There was motion right after this shot that looked totally out of place. I remember thinking at the time he said "Who's got this side". They then tried to run a running play to the right (shannys side) that was a total disaster and almost resulted in a fumble.

He said "Whats That"
Dan Steinberg is a dork !!!!!!
Yea I know.

Someone could have been talking to him from upstairs, for all we know.

Not at the table Carlos.

Posted by: MadeRED | November 4, 2010 9:20 PM | Report abuse

We'll continue to make a big deal about any little thing we can find regarding the idiotic benching of McNabb. I understand, it's the bye week and it gives us something to talk about. But we all know it was a stupid move made in the heat of the moment, and McNabb will be out there starting against the Eagles. Barring injury, we won't see Grossman again this season.

Posted by: corky1031 | November 4, 2010 9:52 PM | Report abuse

@dwilcox: excellent observation about mickey shanahan not attending offensive team meetings bcuz he's trying to promote his son as "the guy" responsible for making things happen. i hope it backfires and both these farts get run outta town.

Posted by: dcjazzman | November 5, 2010 12:30 AM | Report abuse

@malcolmyoung1: excellent observation. i think his childhood nickname must've been either "ratface" or "weasel." maybe that's why he's so damned hyper. actually, he reminds me of an older, meaner version of duke's basketball coach except the Mike K does smile occasionally.

"Who is that inside?"

What kind of sandwich was it, Cindy? lol

Posted by: RedCherokee | November 5, 2010 4:11 AM | Report abuse

He is saying "who's outside"? - no big deal here. But if we are going to break down this little bit of video - what about the week before in the Chicago game? Right after the first interception by Donovan returned for a touchdown - he's on the sideline, Kyle seems to suggest he should have seen the blitz coming - Donovan get's what appears to be sarcastic and testy with Kyle and then big Shanny comes over and says...what? I want THAT video broken down by readers!

Posted by: Craightond | November 5, 2010 9:24 AM | Report abuse

So, was he:

Responding to something someone upstairs said in his headphones?

Responding to a mistake a player (maybe D. McNabb, maybe someone lined up wrong) made?

Reacting to a wrinkle he hadn't seen before from the defense?

I don't know, and nobody else on this blog knows either.
