Brian Mitchell vs. Phillip Daniels heats up

By Dan Steinberg

Next up in Redskins Radio Feuds? It's Brian Mitchell vs. Phillip Daniels! This is the muddy, trash-strewn backwater of the Mike Shanahan vs. Albert Haynesworth feud. I feel like this should go in some sort of emotional conflict textbook. Once one relationship in the family goes downhill, the whole family falls apart.

Tuesday on the Mike Wise Show, Mitchell was ranting about the Haynesworth suspension and the overall way that Shanahan has handled things. Then he started feeling generally pessimistic about the future of the Redskins.

"What are we gonna have that's gonna be much better [than Haynesworth] next year?" he asked. "You watched that damn defensive line that played. I don't think anybody on that defensive line has a right to say a damn thing about anybody. They sucked the other day. Phillip Daniels sucked. Everybody on the defensive line sucked. So if they want to start knocking people, get off of their asses and play better football."

Huh. That was subtle. Mitchell, of course, was referring to Daniels's emotional 10-minute speech about Haynesworth earlier in the week, in which the veteran said "If you ain't all in, you don't need to be here."

Daniels, naturally, responded to B-Mitch's salvo via Twitter:

Yeah i heard what B-Mitch said. Don't bother me too much coming from offensive guy but don't be two faced....Now I see what my friend Clinton Portis had to go through with B-Mitch. Dude don't attack me when I never said anything about play on the field. It's one thing to be ignorant but two faced also. Get real.

So this relationship is going pretty well. Next up, I expect a real doozy to bust out between either Hunter Smith and Chick Hernandez or several aggrieved ballboys and David Elfin. Can't wait.

B Mitch speaks the truth -- he's a thousand times more interesting than the rest of the radio stooges on that station. And he actually played in the NFL!!! There's a concept!

Posted by: dbunkr | December 8, 2010 10:05 AM | Report abuse

Truth be told B Mitch is exactly right. WHEN IS IT EVER GOING TO BE ABOUT WINNING FOOTBALL GAMES!!!!! Every damn year it's one drama after the other. Did Albert haynesworth's absence represent Brandon jacobs running for 100 yard on 8 carries? Hell no.

in my book Haynesworth was a lost cause last year. if they were relying or counting on him, they were foolish. the fact of the matter is teh product on the field is SORRY. What are they going to do about that? give us more NFL soap opera?, because that is all that team does.

Posted by: oknow1 | December 8, 2010 10:08 AM | Report abuse

Who cares what Brian Mitchell has to say anymore? He is a former player, one of many former players disgruntled because of the way the team handled him. He is a bully that thinks he speaks the truth. He may, but what is the point? Both Shanahan and Haynesworth could have handled this better. To place the blame solely on the new coach instead of the multi-million dollar lazy player who complains about the system but didn't come in early to try to learn it, is ridiculous. Haynesworth, even in his most recent interview stated, 'let me be the best player I can be.' Never once did he say 'team in his rant.' For a former player to side with that makes me question the integrity of the former player.

OKNow1 - You are right...regardless of who is right (both are wrong), the product on the field is sorry!

B-Mitch is dead wrong with his rant specially going off on Daniels. For one Daniels never questioned Fat Al's skills on the field for that matter I don't think anyone has. It is about him practicing coming to work and being a professional in general. That is what Daniels was talking about in regards to Hanynesworth. Also B-Mitch don't even know what he is talking about when he was on the Wise show going off saying things like the Skins shouldn't have given Al the 21 million in the spring. They HAD to give him that money weather they cut him kept him or what ever he was getting that money. Then B-Mitch said they would have to pay him 11 Mil next regardless if they cut him again not true!!!!!! Al void that money when he skipped the mandtory mini camp so the Skins can now let him go and they owe him nothing. B-Mitch is just loud mouth who like everyone is entitled to his opinions even though they seem to be uninformed at times.

Brian Mitchell is a hypocrite. In training camp, he was saying how great things looked. Now he's back pedaling. He's related to Donovan McNabb (which he doesn't disclose much and really should) and never will say anything negative about him. And lately, he's been sticking up for Haynesworth, which is inexplicable.

Posted by: poguesmahone | December 8, 2010 10:43 AM | Report abuse

Brain Mitchell is right about everything except one thing: They suck everyday - not just the other day.

They're gutless. 45 points in a half. The most given up by a home team in the 91 years of the National... Football... League.

It'll take years to come back from a loss like that. This franchise is dead. I bet they don't win another division game for 4 or 5 years.

Why can't they find ex-skins guys for these talk shows that actually want the Redskins to succeed? Riggo, Lavar, BMitch, they all hold a grudge and do not want to see success. I'm very tired of BMitch. All he has done is complain since he's been on the air. His act is tired. Doc is critical of the Skins but not all of the time every time. There's got to be a little balance. Don't let the door hit you on the way out Fat Al. Thanks for caring.

BMitch....brutha, please.....

Yeah, you played hard...you were a "tough guy" extraordinaire! BUT....you were a knucklehead as a player & you're a knucklehead commentator now...one with an axe to grind against the organization that made you famous in the first place.

I understand there's still a nice buck to be made in piling on but some of us are old enough to remember your ENTIRE history.

'Nuff said...now go deep-fry a turkey...

Hey look, B-Mitch is feuding with someone else. Never seen that before.

Listen, Mitchell is the same loud mouth who was popping off at the sidelines after a 20 yard kick return. He was good at his job, and more than happy to tell you just how good he was.

He's not the smartest, or the best analyst...but he is going to make darn sure that he is the loudest.

Someday ESPN will come calling on B-Mitch to fill the role of bat crap crazy analyst. And the DMV will be sad, but quieter.

Now, why don't you go out and twitter how to play football?

Preach B. Mitch!!!! The truth hurts.

Posted by: jbworldwide | December 8, 2010 11:16 AM | Report abuse

For me B Mitchell is so boring and predictable, everything is Shanahan's fault to him, no matter what.

To listen to him, B Mitchell is so much smarter than Shanahan, he knows who should be starting, what the play calling should be, personnel, the whole drill. B Mitch comes across so arrogannt and all knowing without an ounce of humility, am shocked teams aren't beating down his door to hire him, since he apparently knows everything - at least he thinks he does.

and yeah am no knocking him for giving an opinion, but in my book he is by a mile the most arrogant sounding media type who covers the team, he talks in rants and absolutes. It gets boring for me at least.

Posted by: mikeskapla | December 8, 2010 11:19 AM | Report abuse

All these Redskins fans in denial about the true state of their team ranting at BMitch...
You guys need to stop drinking the coolaid given to you by the general media and face the truth, as spoken by the someone who can see the good and the ugly and talk about it without being influenced by his love for the "team". He liked Shani in the beginning but he was able to appreciate Shani's failures, like we all did, and has now soured on the whole nepotistic enterprise at Redskins Park...what's wrong with a man changing his opinion on things? only fools don't change their mind.
Who is Philip Daniels??? I am not sure what he has accomplished on this team... Orakpo, Carter, Fletcher and Hall can speak, not him; he is only siding with the coach, the media and the popular view to save his job... He can play nowhere else... he is kissing *ss right now... can't you see that? BMitch does not have a job on the line here next year, Daniels does...
Again, Philip Daniels sucks

Posted by: marabout_noir1 | December 8, 2010 12:01 PM | Report abuse

I respect B-Mitch and am a fan of his, but Daniels has been a warrior for this team. He's played hurt, played with one arm due to a torn bicep muscle, etc.

B-Mitch is right that everyone should step their play up but to knock a 37 year old guy who plays hurt and practices hurt and doesn't complain ain't right just cause he doesn't have the stats.

I agree with most of the posters here who have a clue--B Mitch is a disgruntled former employee, and I don't bother to even watch the post game shows anymore. Granted, the Skins suck, but it's been clear for several years that BMitch has an agenda, and that the facts arent gonna get in his way.

He's a fool.
LaVar is a fool.
and that Micheals guy is a toady.

Everyone is piling on B-Mitch for being disgruntled. Maybe he is disgruntled, but does that mean what he says isn't true? Both Shanahan and Haynesworth are to blame in this but Shanahan is more to blame. The reason is simple: a trait repeated by a player is the fault of coaching--PERIOD. Carlos Rogers plays 8 yards off his man on 3rd and 2 because the coaches don't tell him not to! Shanahan should have gotten rid of Haynesworth a long time ago but he kept the soap opera going instead to embarass Haynesworth. He was more intent on proving he was the boss than he was on winning. To put it simply, he doesn't want to win, he wants to win HIS WAY. Good coaches adjust their scheme to their players, they don't try to make their square peg players fit into their round hole scheme. Haynesworth is not blameless. His lack of professionalism is stunning. But he only did what he was allowed to get away with.

I think it's funny that guys who played hard for this team and were unfairly dumped by this team and are now commentators are labeled 'Disgruntled'.

Aren't most of us fans (except those who drink the Danny's bathwater) 'Disgruntled'? Aren't season ticketholders who get raked over 'Disgruntled'?

And does being 'Disgruntled' mean they aren't right? Is B-Mitch and Lavar inaccurate in all their viewpoints or do they have a unique viewpoint based on firsthand experience dealing with this team?

I may disagree with B-Mitch bashing Daniels but I can respect his 14 years playing RB/KR/PR and some QB and being second All-Time in total yards from scrimmage as a guy that walked it like he talked it.

Bubbler-mouth Mitchell was never a good football player and knows less about coaching. He was nothing more than a kick returner with good team-mates opening holes for him. What does he know about what is going on with the Redskins besides what he watches on TV? Nothing! Why would anyone listen to this blubber-mounth's rants is beyond me. He only wishes he could have had the career that Phillips Daniels had.

Posted by: hock1 | December 8, 2010 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Bottom line to me is that Brian Mitchell is an ex-redskin who would like to see them winning. If he didn't he wouldn't be here doing a radio show. He could have stayed in Philly and did one for the eagles, but his heart is in DC and he may not have been TOTALLY right but he WAS partially right.

Phillip Daniels is an old veteran who should have been traded or let go at the beginning of LAST year. He hasn't done anything special the past 2 years and he is part of that sorry-a defensive line that got pushed all up and down the field the past 2 or 3 games. A real GM would have canned his a_ _ a couple years ago. He would be 3rd string on a good team like NE, but a first stringer on this team of losers.

Posted by: keedrow | December 8, 2010 3:33 PM | Report abuse

hock1, you are high if you think B-Mitch wasn't a good football player. That guy is in rare company with his on the field accomplishments. Show me another 5'10 205 guy that did what he's done.

Not liking him is no excuse to confuse the facts. Check his stats and tuck that hate away.

The only player on the skins that strike fear in anyone is the smallest guy on the team Brandon Banks. Not even Orakpo can put any type of fear in an offense because other teams KNOW that the other 10 players can't provide consistent help.

Portis - done
Moss - strikes fear in NO ONE
Cooley - catch 3, drop the critical one
McNabb - one in the dirt, one in the stands, one to hard, punt
Landry - fearful but DUMB
Doughty - more heart than most, just too small, move to offense and be a wes welker type
McIntosh - NOT IMPRESSED
Alexander - NOT IMPRESSED
Fletcher - More heart than them all but STILL a liability
Keom.... - FAT AND SLOW
Carter - TO SLOW, even at DE
Rogers - Just cut him
Buchanon - Just cut him
Hall - keep
#13 - best receiver on the team
Rabach - Just cut him
Heyer - Just cut him
Lichin... - Just cut him
Brown - Just cut him
Dockery - CUT HIM AGAIN
Williams - keep
RBs - Cut them all

Everything that B-Mitch said about the Defense was true...he sounded like most of feel and say but aren't heard by thousands of people. I like PD too, and he's always been a good guy on D, it's a crappy season and underachieving Haynesworth just added salt to this miserable 3-4 mess of a defense. They truly look pathetic though...and the offense is just offensive...a shade better than last year if we're lucky.

I think Mitchell is 100% right about Daniels. Daniels IS a warrior and has great work ethic and attitude, but let's face it, he wouldn't start for any other team in the NFL. I remember in 2007 when the 'Skins got thumped by the Patriots up in New England, watching Daniels get pushed around like a rag doll play after play. At the time I thought "dang, this guy is too old to be in there". And here we are 3 years later. I don't blame Daniels, he's giving it all he's got. And I don't blame Shanahan, he's just playing the hand he was dealt. But we have some major personnel issues that can only be fixed with many drafts.

BMitch needs to leave Daniels alone. Daniels hustled chasing Jacobs into the endzone. He lined up and tried his best to block the extra point on the very next play! I was never more proud to be a Redskin fan. I'm sure I'm going to get plenty more chances to see Daniels chase RB's into the Redskins' endzone during the next couple of games. Yea accountability!

Phillip Daniels ... has had a decent career, but it should have been over last year. The fact that he starts for our team is just sad, and shows how bad our talent level really is.

B-Mitch ... Yes, he enjoys ranting, stirring up drama, and he definately thinks he's the smartest guy in the room. But, he's also not afraid to call out players and coaches, and with 90% of the Redskins media getting their paychecks from Dan Snyder, I'll take B-Mitch's antics over Larry Michael's nonsense anyday. That guy's so afraid to say anything negative against the team it's rediculous.

I do wish B-Mitch would start calling out his cousin McNabb's lousy playing a bit more. It seems like the other guys on the aftershow are scared to mention it too (because they probably fear the wrath of Mitch) but I guess if B-Mitch blasted McNabb that would make it too uncomfortible around the family Christmas tree this year.

BMitch is 150% correct, and he has every right to speak the TRUTH! Let's get something straight here, folks: London Fletcher is a LEADER. Because of his play on the field, his presence in the locker room, and his PRODUCTION! Orakpo, has the makings of being a leader, but must get more experience (2 years is not long enough to develop into someone whose example others can follow - i.e. younger guys, because heck after just 2 years you're still a younger guy). Phillip Daniels is a role-player, not a LEADER. Being old does not make you a LEADER. Having exceptional game-changing ability makes you a leader. Phillip Daniels does not possess that ability, and NEVER HAS. Albert Haynesworth does. Phillip Daniels is a stooge for 'the man' and I’ll bet he has lost a great deal of respect from his teammates in the locker room for not keeping his mouth shut. The old saying is ‘if you ain’t part of the solution (i.e. stout Defensive line play) then YOU ARE THE PROBLEM! You, Phillip, and those bums Adam Carriker and Kemo-sucks-a lot! I don't know about anyone else here, but on my job when some old-timer starts barking about what everyone else is or isn't doing, the FIRST thing I consider is: "What the heck is this guy contributing" When the answer is quality and excellent production / work product, then that person is a LEADER; when the answer is "Not Much", then that person is a role-player at best, and should shut the h-- up at least! Go BMitch! I wish those folks at WJFK would give BMitch and Doc Walker their own show. I WOULD NEVER MISS IT!!! I know Doc wants to get some stuff off his chest, but he can't 'cause he's working in the Snyder spin-zone (980).

1) Brian Mitchell shouldn't bash Philip Daniels for his effort, Brian Mitchell was a good special teams player...but thats it. At least Philip Daniels was a legit starter in the nfl for many years before he even came to the skins. Something Brian Mitchell could ever say he was in his entire career. And this has occurred because he has worked hard and "gotten off his ass", he wouldn't have been a starter for so many years otherwise. Whats MItchell excuse for his career?

2) I respect Mitchell's comments, but the guy obviously has an axe to grind against this team, which is great but it just is not completely justified with fact. Mike Shannahan admitted yesterday in his press conference that this was not handled the best way. I mean do these journalist/commentators even I dunno do research before they talk? Just watch the press conference before talking. That seems simple enough. It takes a man to admit he's wrong, any idiot can criticize him after he does it....

3) To not hold Albert to any blame at all for this is ignorant to the situation, period. And before any commentator makes an opinion it should be based in some facts, to prove there point not just bash a team to bash it (I must give espn's football commentators some prop for this by looking into the situation before saying anything). Mitchell is obviously not...GET THE FACTS TO PROVE YOUR STATEMENT OR SHUT UP. To say anything otherwise is to reduce your professional comments to that of a fan, which yet again I could get anyone to do. So why should I listen to what your saying again?

4) Brian you need to become a student of your craft, instead of a rambling idiot who puts his foot in his mouth more times than I can count. I wish you worked with some people that actually call you out on it, because this is getting sad and ridiculous. As a journalist/commentator, that is your job right? It is up to you to do opinion pieces based on...I dunno investigation and detailed information. Saying the line sucks...is not that. ANY IDIOT CAN SAY THAT. Albert Haynesworth refuses to play on running downs , so how would he have helped us on these massive run plays again? Albert doesn't want to play anything but his one gap 4-3 defense. He is a one trick pony, a joke. And I for one am glad your not going to slow progress of developing a 3-4 because of one guy. Brian, I hope you have another job lined up where ever because you won't have this one for long my friend. Not because you tell the "truth" but because your not very good at it. Period.

BMITCH is god awful. The best memory i have of him as a reporter is the day that Devin Hester tied his record for most returns for TDs, which was also the day they honored Russ Grimm at FedEx. During the PostGame show you could tell he was pissed about something, and then Doc (I love Doc) Walker came to the booth and talked about how shameful it was that his fellow brother and redskin (talking about BMitch) didn't have the class to show up to show respect for his teammate. BMitch is Haynesworth 10 years ago. So you returned some TDs, great, get over it. That's all you've done with your life? I hope not. Get over your beef with the Skins, if you don't wanna get over it. Then get the hell outta town.

He and one of my favorite all time players (Lavar) are disgruntled former players who have nothing outside of their former selves and choose to prove how smart (in this case ignorant) they are when all they have to do is run their mouth's. Yea, the skins sucked the other day. This is not Shanahans team and will only start resembling what he has to work with beginning next year. Don't be fooled, Phillip Daniels is a 15 year vet who's decided to spout the company line in hopes the Skins will keep him around next season.

Don't get me wrong Haynesworth brought a lot of this on himself because he should have known that if you make millions, people who don't aren't going to have a lot of sympathy for you. But it ain't all his fault, Shanahan is not blameless. He decided early on the make an example of Albert and when Big Al would bend but not break it became personal --- and more so on Shanahan part.

One last thing, as overpaid as Haynesworth may be, so is Shanahan. Too many people think he's such a great coach; but c'mon, he hasn't won anything of note since Elway. I give him two more losing seasons before he's shown the door just like Albert.

Well, what's the criterion for your sarcastic "comment?" Because if you're counting Super Bowl victories, I'd say Mitchell is right.

If you're counting personal accomplishments, again, I'd say Mitchell is right.

If you're choosing between teams that fight and teams that "chase RBs into the endzone, demonstrating 'hustle,' well, I'd say Mitchell is right.

I don't think Mitchell is disgruntled. Danny Boy cut the heart out of the team when he dropped Mitchell for Deione Sanders.

I'd say Mitchell got the last 5 or 6 laughs, while Danny was still paying Deionne money for years after he left to go be a Reverend/TV Personality.

Mitchell had more heart than anybody on our current team, except MAYBE London Fletcher. If we had a team comprised of the mentalities of Brian Mitchell and London Fletcher, we'd be undefeated and would be stepping on the throats of everybody we played.

It aint about "being a good guy" only. Sometimes you gotta get pissed and punch somebody in the mouth.

This team has a bunch of turn-the-other-cheekers.

What happened up in NY was a disgrace to the memory of those great Redskin teams of which Mitchell was a large part. I actually said before Mitchell, "What does Daniels care? He's not doing anything himself!"

Haynesworth didn't play in that embarrassment of a game, so to act like HE'S the reason we can't stop the run and can't move the ball... I find it PUHthetic.

It shifts the focus from "Hey, Daniels, are you gonna make a Fing tackle or what?!" to "Fat Al is a greedy, lazy, malcontent."

This team needs a kick in the ass, and most of them need that kick to land them right out the door.

Locker room character. Nice to have, but doesn't win games. Winning games means you need to whip the ass of the guy in front of you. If you can't do that, find another line of work.

B-Mitch ought to stick a sock in it. He doesn't know what went on in that locker room.
Personally I hope Daniels gives Michell a face full of fist, and knocks his a&& out.

Doc Walker is another A-hole that needs to shut the he11 up as well.
