Caps-Penguins earns huge audience

By Dan Steinberg

With hype from HBO, hype from the local media, hype from the upcoming Winter Classic and a Thursday night holiday weekend audience, the Caps-Penguins game did well on television. Very well.

Thursday night's telecast on Comcast SportsNet earned an average household rating of about 3.6 in the D.C. market, according to Nielsen data. That translates into about 85,000 homes. And that makes it the third-most watched regular season Caps game in CSN history.

(The top two games came during the blizzard last February, a 4.5 for a home game against the Thrashers and a 5.8 for a road loss in Montreal. Both of those games came amidst the Caps' franchise-record win streak, while people were trapped in their homes.)

During the overtime and shootout against the Penguins on Thursday night, the ratings peaked at a 4.9 in the D.C. market. If you add in the 2.0 in Baltimore during that same quarter-hour, roughly 140,000 households were tuning into Comcast SportsNet's Caps coverage.

Of course, one of the things they saw in that quarter-hour was Marc-André Fleury's absurd thievery of Mike Green, preventing the Caps from making off with a win. See above. I'm convinced HBO will deploy a special leather-destroying lens on Wednesday night that will prove for certain whether the puck was in or not.

Anyhow, for the season, Caps broadcasts on CSN are now averaging a 1.62 rating, according to Nielsen, which is up 35 percent from the ratings through a comparable number of games last season.

Interesting--even though the number of no-shows for games at Verizon are up (the place couldn't have been more than three-quarters full for the game against Florida a couple weeks ago), the TV ratings are also up. Not sure what that means.

Even if it were a goal (which I doubt), the NHL would have "lost" that camera angle. No way that game was not going to a shootout -- not with HBO all over the place.

The cave-dweller subhumans are pretty arrogant about the fact that their 7th best penalty shotsman is slightly better than our 7th best penalty shotsman. Enjoy your genetic deficiences and premature deaths.

the usual fine whine and moronic Pittsburgh slurs from the dumbest fans in hockey.......couple of questions here girls? How can you make all of the Cindy comments when your team has two of the biggest wimps in hockey on it? Semins fight against Staal was the funniest thing I have EVER seen.....that is something GIRLS in 2nd grade would be made fun of for.......then there is Michelle Green...what is more gay, how he graba his face and whines for a penalty after every time he is hit? Or those gay slippers, and his Vespa? Ovagkins double tramp stamp was a little scary, but not as scary as Boohoodreau's sauce on his face.........yeah you guys are GREAT, please dont EVER change!!

ok, just three more questions? How many Stanley Cups have you guys won? Uh, why, none, but we have ARRIVED. How many times has Pittsburgh eliminated you from the post season? UMMMMMM, 7 out of 8 sir! How did the 2010 Olympics go for the Caveman? Ummmmm, not so well, he punked out in the clutch again, and manhandled a female fan trying to take his picture.....ok, have a nice night!
