Caps fans chant "We Want Pittsburgh"

By Dan Steinberg

Well, with their second straight win, this one quite comfortably, the Caps appear to be back. And good thing, too, with the way the other D.C. sports teams have performed in December.

The Caps also nabbed a convincing win in time to make Wednesday night's episode two of HBO's 24/7, meaning you can keep the whiskey cap on during this week's showing. Here's a prediction: maybe that show might use this sound from Tuesday night. Yes, that's right, it's Caps fans chanting "We Want Pittsburgh" in advance of Thursday's meeting with the Pens. It might not exactly be "We Want Dallas," but to emerge from the funkiest of funks just in time for a crucial home game against a hated rival with HBO on hand....I think the moment fits.

Who started this chant, might I ask? Any insight, e-mail me.

UPDATE: I'm now told that while Monday night games can be rushed into a Wednesday show, Tuesday night's events are too late to make it. So the "We Want Pittsburgh" stuff will have to wait until episode 3, if it's used at all, and the Caps will be shown with a one-game win streak this week, not a two-gamer. Still.

Not me, but I participated in the hopes that it would be aired on 24/7 tomorrow night. The HBO camera guy definitely turned his camera on the crowd at that moment. Bring on the Pens!

Or at least....we *thought* it was HBO's cameraman...

It will be on next week's episode Dan. Episode 1 showed that the cutoff for the show is Sunday so the Caps will see their losing streak end but the chant will be included with Thursday night's game.

You want the Pens?
You can't handle the Pens!!

See everyone Thurs.

It should be noted that the 'we want Pittsburgh' chants were fueled by many trips to the concession stands for adult beverages, mainly one w/ foam on the top.

It WON'T make 24/7 tonight. I recall them saying that Sunday is the cut-off for the footage that will air on Wednesday. they can't put the show togther in less than a day.

yes. we want another early exit from the playoffs.

The "We want Pittsburgh" chant was preceded by a "Crosby sucks" chant that was at least as loud.

does anyone in the VC believe in Karma or am i the only one? the "all your fault" is dumber than F@!*! not big on the goalies name chant, and we want pittsburgh at this point in time and our recent stretch of play, really wasnt a good call me thinks..

"LETS GO CAPS"

I wrestled with this chanting thing last night while watching on TV. Was it a good idea or was it a bad idea? My conclusion is that I LOVED IT. Yes, we have sucked bad over the past 14 or so games. But, we have had a lot of success vs. Pittsburgh in the regular season (not that that means ANYTHING) and have two wins in a row going into the game (yes, I know we only beat Ottawa and NJ). But, with the HBO show going on, a national audience tuning in on Jan. 1, etc., why not? The only way Caps fans look dumb in this instance is if we lose on Thursday. I also think the players heard this chant, and are ready. Pittsburgh could use this as blackboard material, but that's ok. Bring em on.

Karma, I agree that the "it's all your fault" is stupid. First: it juts sounds idiotic. Second: if it's "all" the goalie's "fault," doesn't that mean the offense deserves no credit. It's just stoopid. As dumb as the silly "RED!" and "O!" during the anthem... people: you aren't in Baltimore anymore. But as for WE WANT PITTSBURGH, I yelled it loudly: I do want Pittsburgh after all this build up. What are we supposed to do, sit here quietly and act like Thursday night isn't coming?

Oh and while we are at it on silly chants, etc. I'm up for ONE salute-the-troops moment a night, maybe two. Last night there were THREE in less than half a game. Do I begrudge the military? NOT AT ALL!! My brother's a marine (Rock on, Jeffy!) and one of my best friends is a pilot (Get 'em, Johnny!!)... but once Ted started accepting sponsor dollars for these things, they escalated. It used to be ONE sponsor-free a night. That was awesome.

Taking money to honor the troops is tacky - to say the least. More than tacky - it's dishonorable. If Ted's THAT into them, the salute-the-troops moments should be sponsor-free.

Last week everyone was screaming "We suck" and "fire Boudreau!" Now you win 2 in a row and its "Bring on Pittsburgh!" As crknight said..Be careful what you wish for. Malkin and Crosby are unstoppable right now. It's a defining game for the Caps, its just 2 more points for the Pens. See you Thursday.

Posted by: puckhead1 | December 22, 2010 10:14 AM | Report abuse

Sure you want us for your own relevance. The Pens come to town and look on StubHub as all the Caps faithful are asking crazy prices to profit on their tickets. What a joke!

We Want The Capitals! See you Jan 1

PUHLEASE!

The only reason we are not in 1st overall still is because the Caps had a bad run. We will overtake them by the All Star Break.

Where were all the Pens fans when they were stinking it up at the beginning of the year? The same place they will be soon enough, hiding behind a better Caps team.

"Where were all the Pens fans when they were stinking it up at the beginning of the year? The same place they will be soon enough, hiding behind a better Caps team."

Concentrating on the teams that Pittsburgh was actually, ya know, playing.

Unlike the Caps fans who think about the Pens "24/7."

Philly fans just called...they want their lame chant back.

Riiiiight Roach. Go back to hiding like your name implies.

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | December 22, 2010 10:42 AM | Report abuse

From my point of view, my freind Gavin(of Arlington, VA) in section 426 started the chant last night. Then the sections to our right caught on and it spread throughout the crowd.

Posted by: aeastlack | December 22, 2010 11:18 AM | Report abuse

I was in section 425 and can confirm that it started over near 426. It died down a little bit and then the lower sections started up with it.

I thought it was great, and I just wish more fans would have joined in, although I understand the jinx implications for paranoid Caps fans.

From a long time Caps fan living far, far away...

WE WANT PITTSBURGH!

Sorry, Pens fans...it's called NO MORE FEAR.

I had the luxury of attending Game 2 of this season (Ottawa, on a Monday night no less) and finally saw in person the complete transformation of Washington into a hockey town. Full house, sea of red, Ovie in OT, after parties at the Chinatown/GP pubs, ROCKIN!

The third-best thing that happened to the Caps behind Teddy and Alex was the downtown arena. Yeah, it took awhile to flourish, but no longer are "roadies" welcome.

G-d bless Ted for making each Caps game an experience. Back in my day, after a colossal playoff choke preceded by TWO EARLIER Game 7 exits - at home, no less - the season/partial plan fan base dwindled. Langway, Gartner, Gustafsson, Cicarelli, Bondra, Pivonka, Hunter, etc. couldn't save the fan base.

But, watching the rowdy highlights as the slew NJ - this after an 8 game slump, no less - is a sign that these Caps fans are a different breed.

Of course, the team is as well. They remind me of the late 80s/early 90s "Steelers on Skates" and we all remember where they ended up. Fast, big, strong, but always entertaining.

If they can jel the "D" and get Ovie and Semin back on track, this could be 1991/92 all over again - in Washington, this time. It took the Pens four years to make this happen (Ulf Samuelsson, Ron Francis, and "Barasso says NO!" were huge), but it did happen for them.

Soon it will happen for the Caps.

Here's hoping for a Caps/Pens Conference Final (though Philly will have something to say, I'm sure).

Every Pittsburgh fan spouts that the Penguins are the Capitals Super Bowl, while to the Penguins it's just another game. Total Bullsxxx. Why are Pittsburgh players costantly carping about how much they hate the Caps? And I don't care who you are, when any opponent sweeps four games from you in the regular season, it gets under your skin. One more thing- don't bring up the playoffs again. You didn't win last year, either.

Regarding chants:

We want Pittsburg - great.

It's all your fault - tacky
Calling out Marty - tacky
Crosby sucks - tacky and moronic

And those damn whistlers - man, just go away and admire yourself in your own bathroom.

Thank you for your consideration, now back to regularly scheduled whining...

I think the HBO series would be far more interesting if it was taking place during playoffs. Now THAT is some intense hockey!
As a Pens' fan, it's alway great to beat a rival team like the Caps or Flyers.
But beating either in the playoffs...WAY BETTER! Beating both in the playoffs in the same year...AWESOME!!!
I watch the Winter Classic regardless of who is playing but these rivalry games are a little better. But ultimately its what happens in the playoffs that will matter.
Just give everyone a good game so those who don't normally watch hockey can maybe appreciate what a great sport it is.

Pittsburgh was actually named most liveable city in the US for 2010...so living in Allegheny County must not be too bad.

If it's not too bad, then why are there so many Pittsburghers living down in this area? Everywhere I turn, someone from Pittsburgh has moved down here. Please, if it's so great, move back!

They must have been grading on a curve.

Allegheny County has been losing population for years. Also, I've known a lot of people and not a single one has ever said "Why don't we go to Pittsburgh for the summer."
