Chris Wright answers Georgetown's critics

By Dan Steinberg

A lot of athletes generate a lot of outrage responding to perceived slights that maybe weren't even really slights. But after getting handled fairly easily by Pittsburgh last night, Georgetown's slights aren't perceived. They're real. Fans are mad. There was some booing at Verizon Center. Others left early. Folks on the message board wrote things like "terrible performance," "like grinding glass," "speechless," "outplayed, outhustled and outcoached," "a pathetic disgrace," and, most alarmingly, "NIT."

I don't know what sites he's reading or e-mails he's getting, but point guard Chris Wright obviously heard the critics, and answered some of them on his Twitter account. To wit:

Hey, it worked for the Seahawks, right?

Year after year after year, Gtown is the most overrated team in the nation. I didn't think there could be a more overrated team than last year's Hoyas, but they proved me wrong this year by somehow becoming even more overrated. Sure, they'll point to the level of opposition and rpi and things like that, but at some point you have to earn your way in this game and stop relying on the achievements of 5 years ago. Jeff green isn't walking through that door. Gtown, at this point, would get smoked by Maryland. Yet the Hoyas are the highly ranked team and MD is nowhere in the rankings.

We'll see where these teams end up in March.

"Losing motivates me more then [sic] any accolade or praise I get" - man, he must be SUPER-motivated right now! I can't WAIT to see how motivated he is after the first round of the Big East tourney!!

Love it when the whiny Terps fans start griping.

Did the Hoyas start out this season over-hyped? Probably. As a passionate Hoya fan, I for one never thought they should have been ranked #9.

But show me the quality MD wins that rank up with Hoya wins over Memphis and others. Yeah, the Hoyas are stinkin up the joint right now.

But then again, so are the Terps.

Where was there a whiny terp fan griping? I don't see that anywhere on this thread.

@Barno1,
Thank you for confirming everything I have ever thought about the quality of education one receives at MD.

Barno, wow, just wow. The griping njjacobs was talking about was clearly your post which contradicts itself.

"Sure, they'll point to the level of opposition and rpi and things like that, but at some point you have to earn your way in this game and stop relying on the achievements of 5 years ago"

Yes, earn your way to the top by beating quality opponents and having a tough schedule you mean? The same exact things you point out but then irrationally throw out are the reasons they received those accolades (and yes I do think they were slightly overrated earlier but hard to argue when you beat memphis on the road and mizzou also and only lost to temple who has one of the best D's in the land). A more correct question would ask why despite having a top 5 hardest schedule consistently the past few seasons we still beat quality opponents before conference play and then fall apart in it?

Also the last time we played Maryland (08-09 season) we were in our worst year since Esherick was our coach and still beat you by 27...enough said.

So you mean they point to the quality teams they beat to determine how good they are? Wow what a revolutionary concept. The exact things you choose to dismiss are two of the factors that help determine rank...but let's not include them when I don't like a team right?

Also the last time the Hoyas and Terps played it was a veritable beatdown by Gtown to the tune of 27 points in their worst season since JT3 has been coaching them.

But yes, when you ignore the facts you are right about your statements.

I don't really think I was griping. I just find myslef tired of the erstwhile rant/whine by Terps fans that they don't get enough respect compared to Georgetown. Not saying the Hoyas deserve it right now either. But a few weeks ago.....

Georgetown plays in a very tough conference
and you need a strong bench in order to survive. The preconference slate may have taken its toll on these guys. I still think that Georgetown will finish with a 9-9 or 10-8 record this year in the Big East.

Yes we'll see where these teams end up in March and Maryland will be nowhere to be seen. There is no way in hell that MD would smoke GU either- not that they're willing to play GU but we won't go there now. All you hear on the radio is about MD no matter how bad they are. GU deserved their early ranking and now deserve their present ranking. Deal with it.

Barno1 - I know it hurts when UMD fans see the Hoyas ranked and the Terps waaaaay down on the list. However, the Hoyas earned the ranking they had earlier this year, and they also have earned where they are right now. That being said, WHO has Maryland beaten this year ? I'll tell you who, a bunch of CUPCAKES. No "Signature" wins this year. A huge MORAL victory against Duke, (whom I must say played probably their worst game this year against the Terps).
I truly wish somehow the Hoyas and Terps could get it on THIS YEAR. Then we could put an end to all this nonsencicle talk. I hardly think Maryland would beat G'town this year, even now while the Hoyas are slumping.
You Terp fans need to quit HATIN... : )
