The Maryland competitive eating team in action

By Dan Steinberg

Our own Norman Chad was one of the first people to write about the University of Maryland competitive eating team, which became the nation's first university-sanctioned chow club late last year. But there's a difference between writing about the sport from the safe haven of California, and actually getting your fingers dirty with real reporting. For the latter, you'll have to go to CSN Washington's Michael Jenkins.

Well done, Jenks. Just wish you could have scored an interview with the team's newly hired coach, the venerable Ralph Fri....nah, forget it.

This 'team' is an embarrassment to the University of Maryland. And, after the football coach debacle of the last month I didn't think I could be further embarrassed to say I am Terp. I was wrong.

Homelessness and hunger in our nation are at levels never seen in (most of) our lifetimes, and our state University decides to attach its name to a 'competitive eating' team. Pathetic. That kind of nonsense should be left to the Greek (fraternity) system where it belongs.

And Steinberg: nice cheap shot at Coach Friedgen in your last almost-sentence. Classy. But I would I expect anything more from you.

Congratulations to the Washington Post! Between Steinberg,Feinstein, and Kornheiser the paper leads the nation in Smarmy Hebrew Hack writers. All Steinberg needs is a violin and he'd be Henny Youngman reincarnated: only funny at the temple.

Correction. Paragraph three, sentence two should read: "But why would I expect anything more from?"

If I keep making mistakes like that I might get hired by the Post...

Fridge jokes ... too soon!

But seriously, it nice to see a group put their SGA funding to good use. Disband SEE and give these guys the money.

This "sport" is so wrong, in so many ways, that I don't even know where to begin. What kind of debauchery will you be endorsing next?

Quit hating. As of now the SGA and University have provided $0 in funding to this team so dont say its a waste of their money. Secondly, I dont see Ledo's making large pizzas to donate to the homeless and charities across the world. If somebody wants to come in and buy some pizzas and then eat them quickly, whats wrong with that? Im sure you've all bought pizzas in your lives, the difference is you eat them slowly and probably by yourself cuz your hating attitude pushes all your friends away from you.
