Ovechkin gives Subban "hit of the year"

By Dan Steinberg

Remember back in October when all the reporters were asking all the D.C. hockey players about how fans would muster the enthusiasm for yet another regular season when all anyone wanted was the playoffs? The D.C. hockey players found a novel answer, making their drive for a playoff spot just interesting enough that no one could possibly claim boredom.

And in between their 1-73 overtime slide, the Caps still manage to make some highlight-reel plays. Like this Tuesday night Alex Ovechkin hit on P.K. Subban, which brought "high-flying" back into the Caps' lexicon.

"I think it was the best hit of the year, to be honest with you," Subban later said, via the Montreal Gazette and the Examiner. "I was flying through the air and I was wondering when I was coming down."

Excellent old school hip check. It looked very slow motion too.

Great hit. But as usual with the new version of Ovy, this is a retaliatory hit. He needs to do this stuff on a general basis, not just because he got drilled a few seconds before that.

The only other Caps hits that looked like that I can recall was Scott Stevens on Daneyko and Mike Green v the Flyers in the playoffs a few yrs back. I forget who he hit.

Too bad Brooks Laich took a tripping penalty about 15 seconds into that PK. As much as the media loves that guy, he's been terrible this year.

Hit of the year?

All #8 did was see the dumb kid running at him blindly and then he just ducked and then stood up to dump the punk.

He didn't even "hit" him.

The best hit was when Kostitsyn was running at him face to face and Ovie flattened the moron and kept skating.
