Gray and Rhee to meet Thursday

rhee_gray.JPG

The long-awaited sit-down meeting between presumptive mayor-elect Vincent Gray and schools chancellor Michelle Rhee will take place Thursday, a person with knowledge of the meeting said this afternoon.

The summit is set for high noon, in Gray's wood-paneled corner office in the John A. Wilson Building. It will come eight days after Rhee described Gray's victory as "devastating" for city school children.

There is no telling how long the meeting will last, but Gray's schedule is open for the entire afternoon, I am told.

"re: Michelle Rhee's
"mom friendly" comment,
prepared specifically for the Oprah show, about
moms not tolerating
mediocre teachers being given time to
grow and develop professionally ---
Well... The unqualified, needing-to-grow-professionally
(newbie 'Teach for America') "TFA" principal that Rhee PUSHED on our school,
despite protests from a panel of engaged, informed,
truly progressive, professional educators
and parents with advanced degrees in education ---
(this TFA principal)
hired and protected even more inexperienced,
unqualified teachers who will take YEARS to
develop into true professionals.
But the TFA principal
and those teachers all know
how to say "yes" to their boss.
Too bad they don't know
the basics of how children learn,
or the nuances of curriculum and instruction.
It is hard, hard work indeed to have to reprogram
my kids every day after school, to get them
to embrace
and understand learning again.

Rhee's influential, BAD decisions and practices,
more than ANY OTHER failure of the
DC Public School system, has me on the verge of pulling my kids out of school.
Rhee embarrassed herself mightily at the
DC screening of this film
("Waiting for corporate Super-scammers)" --
with her comment insulting DC voters.
My kids. and the 350 others in their school,
will not be devastated at all when she leaves.
We assume she will
head to the business world
for which she may have more
appropriate skills."

Did anyone else read the article in September's Ebony where Michelle Rhee
proudly touts the fact that programs like TFA and her 'New Teacher Project'
are bringing in teachers from the 'elite' schools?
She had to backtrack when
Dr. Julianne Malveaux, president of Bennett College,
challenged her.

Rhee didn't mention that these programs bring in teachers with no disciplinary skills
(such as herself -- remember her recent, fond anecdote about
"taping shut students' mouths") in Baltimore (!)
and that these these recruits are basically temp. workers
who are not committed
to the profession of teaching (ditto).

These programs are NOT designed to develop a professional corps of teachers.
As a teacher with 15 years experience,
I can tell you, no one becomes an expert in only 2 or 3 years.
I don't understand why Rhee (or anyone else) spends their energy trying to build
and repair schools with these
types of temporary teachers.
They are a band aid ---
nothting more
(band-aids are easily peeled off, fall off) ---
a pseudo-reform sham providing cover for a Wall Street-funded
edu-profiteering scam
that
doesn't heal anything and doesn't construct anything
lasting or worthwhile for the children.

DC Public Schools
under Rhee-form:

The first advisory (marking period) is
half over and most DC schools students do not have books to take home !!!

I got one syllabus from an English teacher for my 9th grader that says
PARENTS HAVE TO BUY 4 TEXT BOOKS !!!
Computers are missing, and it took a month to get my daughter
in the right class.

The problem is the unorganized, uncaring, arrogant mayoral administration --- Spending money on
dog parks and they can't even buy enough books for students.

Shame on Oprah for not doing her homework.
I guess that money spent on the
PR firm to help with Michelle Rhee's
public image actually worked (?!)
Rhee has the nerve to say she is concerned about the students.

What was helicopter-in

Just the facts:
Shaw Middle School's scores did not even stay about the same.
They went down -- reading scores declined from 38.52% in ’08 to 29.20% in ’09 and it’s math scores went from 33.33% to 29.02%. This can easily be verified at the official website http://nclb.osse.dc.gov. Did you not check? Did you just take Chancellor Rhee’s or Principal Betts’ word on it? The fact that Shaw’s scores didn’t go up is a major embarrassment for Rhee. She installed a new principal, who hired a new staff, selected for being young and “unjaded” and he paid the kids for good behavior and attendance. It seems imperative that Rhee is asked to re-examine her determination to pursue this method and not gloss over an obvious failure with her ongoing pathological prevarication & misrepresentation of the facts. (as per writer "efavorite") -----------------------------------------

Michelle Rhee is full of herself..... and facts show.... Her scores went down !
The ironic part is watching Rhee loyalists twisting themselves into pretzels to rationalize a 4% drop in D.C. elementary school test scores. Suddenly, the entire test-and-punish crowd is explaining to us how test scores don't mean anything and how test scores are tied much more to out-of-school conditions. The problem is that she has made rising standardized test scores a central measure for achievement -- hers, students and teachers, writes Washington Post columnist Valerie Strauss. So, feel free to judge Rhee on her insistence on placing so much importance on test scores (as have today’s other titans of education reform, such as Joel Klein in New York City). She believes they are so important, in fact, that she recently announced that she wants to expand their use in city schools, so that, in time, every D.C. student from kindergarten through high school is regularly assessed to measure academic progress and teacher effectiveness. But judging her reforms on the actual test scores, well, as my kids say, “Not so much.”

Scores over the last two years had been on the rise. Last year, nearly half (49 percent) of elementary students were scored at proficiency levels in reading and math, posting an increase of several percentage points over 2008's results. High school students also posted modest gains last year. Scores had skyrocketed since 2007, when less than a third of DCPS elementary school students were gauged as proficient based on federal standards. Of course, 49 percent means that DCPS were still failing the majority of students; lower scores will certainly be a big blow for Michelle Rhee and a boon for critics of her reforms and management style.

I am amazed at the number of teachers that seem to think that Rhee has done poorly in her position. Compared to what - decades of the DC school system being a joke despite the highest in the nation total funding per pupil?

What you teachers gotten right thus far? How well have you done? Oh, it's not you it's the schools/princpals/parents/books. Well you can pick more than one and of course there is nothing wrong with any of the teachers.

If Rhee goes, it will just be another in a long line of idealists who thought they could make a difference, but you guys showed her huh?!

It's good that you have tenure in DC, because you won't get hired in any other school district, unless you think a DC teaching stint looks looks good on your resume.

Her dismissal will be really wonderful news for those mediocre teachers who now have a green light to continue destroying the future of DC students.

Adrian Fenty and Michelle Rhee’s
ongoing CORRUPT connection with thugster-
henchman-wannabe impresario Ron Moten
and
millions of dollars of no-bid city contracts,
including with DCPS schools !

=> Can we perhaps get the City Council to do an investigation behind exactly what goes on with Ron Moten and his Peaceoholics organization in DC Public Schools.

Several, and I mean several, of Moten’s Peaceoholics ADULT employees have engaged in sex with female DC Public School students as young as 14 years old, some of these teenage girls have children with these men as well. Much of Moten’s staff consists of convicted felons: rapists, drug dealers and murders. When allegations are brought to the attention of school principals or MPD, the Fenty admin make them disappear…and in return DC government continues to feed the Peaceoholics piggy bank.

Concerned Citizen writes:

"Mr. Harrison who is an employee of he Peaceoholics sexually assaulted a female student at Spingarn High School. I am not going to say alledged because he has been arrested. He also allegedly proposed at least six other young ladies. This is not the end.
Mr. Harrison is an ex-con who spent 22 years in prison for MURDER. Yea MURDER! This is what Mayor Fenty and Michelle Rhee allows in our school.
No effective, sufficient background checks done per the policy of DCPS. THe Peaceoholics have free run of the school. They were dismissed from the school the same day of the assault. Similar allegations have been made at other schools. Why does the district continue to allow the Peaceoholics to assault our students?"

This story can be verified by legal documents, court records, and prior news reports.

Mr. Gray is indeed a compassionate leader and is meeting with a school chancellor who personally campaigned against him in ward 3, the past two weeks of the campaign.

Hopefully, he will thank her for her service and define the time frame for her departure (January 2, 2011).

I'd like to thank Michelle Rhee for teaching our children the following:
How to self-artificially-inflate one’s ego.
How not to work with and cooperate with others.
How to be completely self-centered and a know-it all.
How to make poor choices (e.g., Time magazine interview, campaigning for Fenty, etc.) that clearly show an incredible lack of intelligence and judgment.
How to skew statistics to create half truths and lies.
How to tell outright lies (trying to later characterize your "devastated" remark when the context was already crystal clear).
How not to listen to anyone but yourself.
How not to respect the opinions and ideas of others who may disagree with you.
How to live life without even one shred of humility.
How to say one thing but mean another (e.g., that you care only about the children, but really it's all about you and who you can or can't work with).
How to be a spoiled brat and back away from a challenge just because you don’t like the change that occurred.

Yes Michelle, thank you so much for those life lessons that we can pass on to our children through your example. Those very children you say you care so much about, but who you will likely have to walk away from (due to your poor judgment and inability to work with anyone but those who give you a green light for your bone headed decisins) because things didn’t turn out “your” way. It must be nice to have a millionaire fiancee/husband to rely on. Yes, you'll be "fine."

@dmt3 I am totally with you. People (Black folks mostly) are either ignorant or stupid, or both. Did anyone see Oprah Monday where Rhee gave more insight into why she did what she did in DC? She broke it down to the simplest analogy she possibly could, and I was mortified to get that prospective from her. She was the best thing to happen to DC schools. Gray is old school so I see things going back to the way they were, and in the end only the kids will suffer. Rhee is a visionary who sees the bigger picture, the children. I don't really care much about the numbers and stats, you hear one thing and then you hear another so who really knows, but I do know that you had someone who was willing to come in and clean house since progress wasn't being made and try to get the city back on track with others in the nation. A shame some people just don't get that.

Your screen name is Lulu and your are calling someone stupid, are you for real? For all of those flapping that whole in your face. If you don't want things to go back to the way they where(wow some people), get up off you butts and keyboards and volunteer in the schools so that you can keep an eye on things and hold those with the rule over our children accoutable. That's what I do. Don't sit back and take someone's word for what is going on in our schools. One of the things that trouble me is the fact that I see many of the new hires walk around the schools in a state of shock. They have no clue as to how to teach a child to read who can not focus because there has been no food in the home for three days, and the only meal some of them get is at the school. Be careful how you put down people, until you give more than lip service in regard to the DCPS challanges you really have no dog in this fight.

Posted by: msdooby1 | September 22, 2010 5:06 PM | Report abuse

@msdooby1 your handle is just as stupid LOL. You basically agreed with what I said hun. A TEACHER can get through to a student regardless of their economical background, and wouldn't use that as an excuse to give up on a child, a trend that stretches throughout our public school system because of students like the ones you've mentioned. If you watched the Oprah episode Monday, Rhee, Bill Gates, and John Legend explained this concept of teachers and principals giving up on the students because they are doomed to failed as if. If the staff doesn't believe in them, then what? And that's why she did waht she did, ineffective teachers and falculty that let the system go to s*** because they didn't give a d*** of the children!

Posted by: lulu202 | September 22, 2010 5:18 PM | Report abuse

Oprah may or may not be a hero to you but I could never stand her. She comes off fake to me. My heros lived in my house. Mother, Aunts, never had to look to the outside for guidance. Also the old head teachers (teaching a long time) are not the ones in shock, it is the new Rhee hires walking around like they have been sniffing glue. The point is honey, you are wrong for calling black people, brown people, white people stupid. See we don't like it when the looking glass reflects back on us. I know for a fact that it is very hard to study any subject when your belly is touching your back from hunger. Do you have children in DCPS? I welcome you to join me in the school in which I volunteer. It may open both of our eyes. I mean that in all honesty. I weclome anyone who wants to make a difference, and affect change. The school is in Adams Morgan
