Adrian Fenty signs with speakers bureau as 'education advocate'

By Mike DeBonis

Former D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty has signed with a major speakers bureau, which is marketing him as a "national leader in the area of urban education reform" -- another sign that Fenty is looking to capitalize on his school-overhaul efforts in his life after the mayoralty.

Fenty has "exclusive representation" by the Greater Talent Network, a Manhattan agency that also represents dozens of high-profile folks including actor Danny Glover, former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, writer Christopher Hitchens, filmmaker Michael Moore, and Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

Fenty's web page bills him as a "dynamic and captivating speaker" who "discusses the necessity for nationwide education reform, rebuilding the economy, developing urban infrastructure and remodeling the political arena." A YouTube video (above) put together by the agency includes clips from education-themed speeches and media appearances -- including one of the most rousing speeches this reporter ever heard Fenty deliver, at a December 2008 fundraiser.

His speech topic is billed as "Changing Tomorrow, Today: An Afternoon with Mayor Adrian Fenty."

From his agency bio: "One of the youngest mayors of a major metropolitan U.S. city, rising political figure Adrian Fenty captured the nation's attention during his term as Mayor of the District of Columbia. Celebrated for his leadership in urban education reform, the public school system in the D.C. had been troubled for years with poor student test performance scores and graduation rates among the lowest in the nation. During his first months in office, he shocked the city--and the nation--by bringing the public school system under his administration's control. That bold move and the addition of Michelle Rhee as Chancellor of Schools have credited Fenty with putting the school system on the path to long-awaited improvements inside and outside the classroom."

Virtually all of Fenty's national media appearances since losing the primary election to Vincent C. Gray in September have concerned education reform. In September, Fenty appeared with newsman Tom Brokaw on an NBC News education panel, where he said "politicians are going to have to make tough decisions and risk their political future because it's the right thing to do." Last week, he appeared on CNN's Situation Room to discuss the politics of snow response, but the conversation with anchor Suzanne Malveaux quickly turned to school reform.

"It cost you that reelection?" she asked.

"Yes. More than anything, it -- it just may have," Fenty replied. "But it was definitely worth the risk. I wouldn't change anything."

Meanwhile, Rhee has continued to fashion herself into a national education reform brand, backed by deep-pocketed philanthropists who hope to raise $1 billion for her efforts. Her advocacy organization, StudentsFirst, is expected to announce a national legislative agenda for state and local policymakers this week. Fenty's agency web page includes a link to buy the DVD of "Waiting for 'Superman,'" the high-profile documentary that prominently features Rhee.

What is the world a speaker for education..has anyone heard this man speak. Fenty stop embrassing yourself and get out of DC...

For the WP which seems so depressed over the defeat of King Fenty non-dethroned:
Let the name of Adrian Fenty be stricken from every DC government document and every building in the DC government.

Let the name of Adrian Fenty be unheard and unspoken, erased from the memory of the DC government and the WP, so let it be ordered.

..."dynamic and captivating speaker" LOL

Posted by: 2belinda | January 4, 2011 2:31 PM | Report abuse

Good for Rhee. She wouldn't have liked working for Gray. He needs schools to fail so he can have someone to blame it on for his reelection campaign.

Posted by: johnfchick1 | January 4, 2011 2:40 PM | Report abuse

no surprise. he hitched himself to the latest money train in politics, the education boon-doggle, as mayor of DC. thus it is no surprise that he seeks to cash in openly to spread the lies of his non-success after his lone term as mayor.

A counter agency needs to be developed to challenge the results he and Rhee will claim as success for years to come.

Posted by: oknow1 | January 4, 2011 3:08 PM | Report abuse

Adrian Fenty is not a dynamic speaker, I have heard him at press conference, pre-editorial room cut. He isn't very literate and doesn't sound very bright.

However, some say he is a good boxer, though. Of women.

Posted by: concernedaboutdc | January 4, 2011 3:45 PM | Report abuse

So, hmmmm, no one has actually offered him a real job? Perhaps he will need to expand his portfolio on the speakers circuit, he has other areas of expertise, "Running Shoes of the 70s, 80s, and 90s", "Skimpy Lycra Running Shorts, hows it hangin", "Life on the DL", "Black Bottom Blues", ..... I'm sure he will enjoy the travel, look for him at a bath house or rest room stall near you soon!

LOL! You guys are vicious!

Posted by: PepperDr | January 4, 2011 4:20 PM | Report abuse

Adrian Fenty is not articulate nor is he that intelligent in my opinion. With this being said, I truly wish this man would disappear. I wanted to be a movie star, but he couldn't make it. The white media continues to focus on this mixed breed guy as if he was the savior of black people. In my opinion, this guy never identified himself as being a black man. I never heard him refer to himself as being black. Good riddance to this guy.

Posted by: Ward4DC | January 4, 2011 4:28 PM | Report abuse

Fenty is boring. What he should do is assess his arrogance and aloofness as the real cause of his demise. I saw it first hand on many occasions, including his petty dealings with the Council. School reform may have made some mad, but that was not the reason for his loss. He just could not connect with people. Again, I've never seen just unjustified arrogance.

Thelildiva4u said Washpo…we get it your trying to build some history for Gestapo Fenty…trying to find a silver lining in is one term as Mayor of DC or maybe even build reasons that he should be hired for whatever job. But, please enough let’s just move on

So basically I was right and all these glamorized lies…I mean articles lately were a build up to this announcement. How transparent.

Posted by: JeroRobson1 | January 4, 2011 4:54 PM | Report abuse

Yes, I am a Fenty supporter.. lets get that out right now.

Thank you armchair politicians for your comments. Now, please file those applications for the council position open so that you can enlighten all the other DC residents of your pearls of wisdom....
Which of course, i don't think you will, since you would rather slander him.

@SoCali: again, offensive unnecessary comments.

Ward4DC - not even wasting my time with your BS.. since when does someone have to qualify themselves by their race.

@JeroRobson1 and concernedaboutdc (again)and others... you think he can barely speak? OBVIOUSLY, he can.

He was the mayor of DC.. obviously, he can speak well enough to get elected.
Why don't you just move on ...

Keep it moving.

Are some of these comments necessary?
especially the Gestapo remarks..

So what's he going to say when asked a question, "Look at the what the editorial board of the Washinton Post said?" HAAA!Fenty, you're a hoot. Please go away. Please.

Posted by: BitterJill | January 4, 2011 5:59 PM | Report abuse

pdv1 is a Fenty supporter. I am not. But I agree with the Fenty supporter when he observes that the remarks here are unnecessary; they are hateful and obscene, disrespectful, and add nothing to any kind of intelligent debate. We are all responsible for the words that we use. If we wish to have our thoughts respected, they must command that respect through our words. If we wish to be looked upon as intelligent contributors, on this page our words are all that we have. Let us use them wisely.

Posted by: DCEsq | January 4, 2011 6:29 PM | Report abuse

The speakers bureau Fenty bio clearly demonstrates how words can be twisted (and interpreted) in different ways.

If Fenty wants to expend his resources in signing with a speakers bureau, he can go right ahead. In all honesty, it is highly unlikely that he will ever become a sought after speaker on any topic, particularly education.

Fenty brought in Michelle Rhee in an effort to make education reform his crowning glory. They both failed miserably. So, it is beyond ludicrous that he would attempt to sell himself as an expert speaker on education reform.

What self-respecting organization would be willing to pay money to listen to him speak? Even if he has professional speechwriters, it is highly unlikely that he can articulate those words in an intelligent, literate or entertaining manner.

The speakers bureau staff can put whatever spin they wish on his disastrous one-term, no one who knows the truth wants to hear his spin-doctored version.

I am really tired of all this Fenty bashing. I have never seen so much unwarranted hate in this city. For all of you people that have children in DC Public Schools that speak against school reform is crazy in my opinion. Our children are always taking the back seat in this city when they are very well our future. I know of many schools where these kids didn't have school books, they were being sent home with xerox copies and going to a corner booth which was their library. Our kids were attending schools that were constantly being patched up with paint peeling from the walls and sometimes no heat. This is embarrassing for this to be happening in the nation’s capital. This guy (Fenty) came in and gave our kids a chance and the nation knows. Other cities are adopting DCPS School Reform.
Our president gave MILLIONS of dollars to continue the school reform that came about during Fenty's tenure as mayor. You all need to stop being so selfish and really LOVE your kids and put them first. This Fenty Administration has given them a chance. Whether he's Black, White, Hispanic, or Asian; why should it matter? He got the job done with our kids. They have state of the art libraries, teachers that had no choice but to teach (a lot of them were spoiled by dc gov because they never cared about education), books and not xerox copied papers, and recreation centers. Maybe that's why the murder rate was down as low as it ever has been since the 60's. That's a known fact now for all you naysayers. Our kids are important and this guy took the time to care about them. His whole tenure was dedicated to the kids in this city. I commend him just for that and not playing politics. No wonder a company would sign him. He deserves it.
Mayor Fenty, I wish you well in all of your future endeavors. You are an accomplished success.

Adrian Fenty is a mean, not a God. You Fenty azz kissers, please stop making him out to be something he's not. I was hoping he would move to Ohio and work at Oberlin College around liberal whites where he feels most comfortable. Liberal whites has always thought they knew what's best for blacks.

Again: these columns (thank you DCESQ) are for meaningful discussion .. and not hate bashing (which is what you accuse Mr. Fenty of)... yet you are sitting there and doing just that yourself.

If you want to improve the system, then please fill out the application for city council, ANC, or something else.. and work to improve it the way you thing you want.

Fenty's mantra was you can fool some of the people all of the time, and those are the ones you want to concentrate on. So we know PDV1 is one of them.

@poppuddin88...the murder rate decreased across the country so DC didn’t achieve something unique that no other jurisdiction did in this country.

I see that you are going to continue to perpetuate the whole “they don’t know what’s good for them” theme. Look I will give Fenty/Rhee this much, which is they provided a national spotlight for the issues with public schools and that's it!

Laslty, as I have said in previous comments. This isn’t the first time that D.C. has dealt with school reform. BF (Before Fenty), yes the city was moving forward before Fenty was elected. The Mayor and City Council debated as well as enacted many matters involving educational reform. I know it’s hard to believe that your savior’s idea wasn’t a new one, but it’s true. In fact Fenty voted against Mayoral take over.

When Anthony Williams took office he introduced this concept as well. The council at the time and the mayor came to a compromise which allowed the Mayor to appointment members to the school board

(http://www.dcwatch.com/mayor/000214.htm). At the time Mary Levy (Google her) put together a great chart on the pros and cons of Mayoral Control.

The cons outweighed the pros see Mary Levy’s 2004 (http://www.dcpswatch.com/dcps/040326b.htm), chart of the pros and cons of a mayoral takeover of DCPS. Many of what she outlined in this report was accurate and proven true through the Rhee/Fenty reign.

Just because he signed up, doesn't mean anyone will want him to speak to them. Assuming that these agents have sample tapes or something like that, I can't imagine that anyone would hear him speak and then decide they wanted to pay for that.

Adrian Fenty is a moron. What intelligent person would listen to him much less pay to listen to him. Why do you think he does not have a real job yet? Signing up to speak is not a job. Many, many, many people do not like him. He stepped on so many people when he was Mayor and he did it with joy. Now he and his wife wonder what happened and why so many people don't like him or have any sympathy for him. There is not one quadrant in this City where he did not mistreat someone. I have never seen power go to someone's head so quickly. I hope he feels the sting of unemployment and desperation like so many of the people he stepped on and treated like crap because he HAD the power. Where is that indictment?
