Yes, Kwame Brown is really driving a mail truck

By Mike DeBonis

In my not-a-column about D.C. Council Chairman Kwame R. Brown's political future, I noted that he said in a recent WTTG-TV interview that he is currently driving a "1983 mail truck" -- that, in lieu of the city-paid 2011 "fully loaded" Lincoln Navigator L he once piloted.

That was not a joke. Spokeswoman Traci Hughes confirms that Brown is indeed using a former mail truck to get to work these days.

WUSA-TV anchor/reporter Bruce Johnson tweeted a photo of the vehicle, which he spotted parked behind the John A. Wilson Building yesterday.

Hughes said Brown had used the truck, which appears to have the all-black exterior Brown had once requested for his Navigator, during his prior campaigns, dating back to 2004. "It does not look like the same kind of ride that was last parked in that space," she said. "In terms of the handling."

To me this makes the SUV order look even worse--he was trying to get a car that would greatly upgrade his usual wheels, calling his motivations into even greater question.

If he ordinarily was driving a Lincoln Navigator and thought the city should provide one for him to do his work it would be less objectionable. But here he is expecting taxpayers to fund his new car.

How about buying a nice ride with your salary? Or how about paying for the ordered navigator with your salary until the lease is up?

Of course, the haters will find something negative to say about Kwame Brown driving even his own vehicle. Of course ordering two Navigators was absurd, but damn! Just shut up!

He should be driving a mail vehicle as part of his daily occupation. Maybe then he could gain some appreciation for real working people rather than taking advantage of his position in politics. He is clearly not fit to serve the District of Columbia according to his past record.

I just have to ask this question: What is the big deal with athletes, celebrities and now apparently local government appointees wanting to drive SUVs as a status symbol?

Posted by: BigDaddy651 | March 4, 2011 2:30 PM | Report abuse

Ride WMATA you loser! All these city employees, from Kwame to Che, should be forced to ride city buses and transfer to trains at least 3 round trips a week. Maybe they could film some fights on the Metro.

Posted by: lee3333 | March 4, 2011 2:40 PM | Report abuse

Doesn't he have a car of his own to drive?

Posted by: mbrumble | March 4, 2011 2:51 PM | Report abuse

Whats wrong with the Metro or better yet his own personal vehicle. At the level of compensation this man receives the city didn't need to lease a vehicle, let him tur in mileage receipts like everyone else

This news just made my day.

Try to steal $100,000 and if you get caught, offer to donate $1000 to charity to make everything OK?

Driving a mail truck seems to imply that because he is now driving a virtually worthless vehicle, his previous actions should be forgiven. He should just apologize for his poor decision making and pay for the difference between the $2000 SUV and the average payment for an average car.

That is one SWEET ride! Now I understand wanting the Navigator...

Posted by: BigDaddy651 | March 4, 2011 3:44 PM | Report abuse

He must think this is some kind of joke. He needs to grow up.

"Kwame Brown: He Delivers!"

Love him for being human - and having a sense of humor.

Maybe he can give reporters a ride to their next news story.

Points for carpooling!

This man is the epitome of what's wrong with our elected officials. It's not bad enough that he requested a loaded Navigator, with SHINY CHROME WHEELS no less. But, to decide that you don't like it because it does not have black interior and procure another... What an arrogant fool. And people do not think government is out of control!?!?

Posted by: sagedutch | March 4, 2011 5:12 PM | Report abuse

Why can't these government officials use their own car to get to work like everybody else?

Posted by: richyancy | March 4, 2011 5:15 PM | Report abuse

Told ya he was an idiot.

Posted by: nicenss | March 4, 2011 5:26 PM | Report abuse

I fail to comprehend why voters elected him. He's not qualified. He was in debt while running for office. He get's elected and acts like a rapper. Just because he returned the vehicle DC taxpayers are still paying for the vehicles. I hope the Post follows up and tells us how long are the vehicles leased for.

What really hurts is the arrogance shown by a public servant. This is a city of thousands of public servants who do not expect cars, chauffeurs, and bling. They are usually happy to have meaningful jobs with adequate compensation. Elected officials in Washington should get over their feeling of being anointed and concentrate on the job of ensuring that our city prospers.

Brown has to be the most immature council person ever known to man. He needs to grow up. Until he does, he should find employment somewhere else.

did the city get released from those costly leases? or is taxpayer money still paying for the pimp-mobiles, but they are hidden from view??
trash, trash, trash.
why isn't this guy in handcuffs for attempt to misuse city funds???

Take him up!

Kwame: Ahhhhh (screaming) as the wipe hits the flesh (virtual of course)

Washington Post et al: Your name is fully-loaded. I want to hear you say it...your going to learn to say your name....let me hear you say it .... what's your name?

Kwame: Kwame...Kwame Brown

Washington Post et al: When the master gives you something you take it. It's a nice name your going to take and it's going to be yours tell the day you die... I know you understand it...I want to hear! Again.

The whip (aka the another story is posted) hits Kwame's flesh again

Kwame...Kwame Brown

So washpo are your done making Kwame the whipping boy yet?

DC has bigger issues to focus on.

Ummmm lets see....like how are we going to make up the billion dollars surplus we lost?

The story is getting old

Where did he get the mail truck? Given I don't know Kwame Brown, I have to wonder how he could drive a mail truck (and what does his wife drive?) and STILL want a Lincoln Navigator. Truck. Cool. Navigator. Nasty.

The boy ain't right..

Posted by: wewintheylose1 | March 5, 2011 5:31 AM | Report abuse

Just a couple of questions?
1. Does Kwame need a booster seat for the mail truck?
2. Did he buy the truck with HIS OWN money? Da boy don't seem to want to use his own cash!

Posted by: priveye | March 5, 2011 5:54 AM | Report abuse

From sublime to ridiculous. But then - hey! Y'all elected him.

Recent photographs of Kwame "Fully Loaded" Brown suggest that ,in fact, this is a pizza delivery truck.

Adrian to Kwame, from the DL to the FL!

I can't stand Kwame Brown. He is the ostentatious and showy type. He needed a pimped out Navigator. No wonder his credit is in ruins and he had a large sum of debt. I cannot understand why anyone would vote for him. He still managed to "pimp-out" the mail truck.

DC Citizens... is this what you want from your leaders? Tell him to get a JOB and not feed off the citizens of the District. Anyone that FORGETS that they are servants of the public, NOT rulers of the Public needs to be thrown out of office back to the hole they crawled out of...DC, you deserve more. Everytime you walk through a DC school in SE, think about that pimped out Navigator and your children sharing their school with rats and roaches.

SERIOISLY!! If the man is doing his job WHO CARES what he drives!! HELL he could drive a city paid Bentley for all I care as long as he does his job!! The TRUE problem is you WHITIES wanted your Uncle Tom Fenty to be running the city and now that Uncle Tom is gone and our people aka Kwame and Vinny G are in power, you have issues!! See we could fix this problem easliy...ALL YOU WHITIES go back to Mo County and Fairfax County and take the Mexicans with you!!! Then "Chocolate City" could be happy, whole and UNIFIED once again!!!!

Posted by: nunofurbizness | March 5, 2011 1:01 PM | Report abuse

Take it easy on Kwame. The truck belongs to his brother Rastus.

Posted by: slipuvalad | March 5, 2011 1:15 PM | Report abuse

You can rest assured that if Kwama drove a Bentley....someone else would have to pay for it because DA BROTHA can't pay his own bills.

Posted by: priveye | March 5, 2011 5:07 PM | Report abuse

This is the ride he should have been using in the first place. There are tons of Lincoln Navigators out there, but how many all-black 1983 mail trucks do you see riding around? For that reason, I think the mail truck is more "showy" than the Navigators. If anyone sees that truck, they'll know EXACTLY who's behind the wheel. But a Navigator? Heck, that could be anybody driving that thing.

It is unfortunate that DC city council members and the mayor are subject to heightened scrutiny. They steal in the tens of thousands, while GOP members of Congress steal in the hundreds of billions. Just the same, Kwame Brown is a narcissistic pig. I have heard him many times on WAMU and he never says anything. He just tries to sound nice and appease angry phone callers. It should be fun watching him try to handle his massive personal debt. When will his house face foreclosure?
