New Hampshire vs. Gibbs
It's difficult to know, based on the amount of ink spread across the pages of this morning's Post, what editors think is more important in Washington today -- the results of the New Hampshire primary or the retirement of Joe Gibbs as coach of the Redskins. Our Readers Who Comment, however, are talking more about politics than football, so we'll go with that.
Interestingly, the RWC who posted on Dan Balz's analysis devote almost all their attention to Hillary Clinton's victory and very little to John McCain's. Perhaps that's because McCain's win was predicted, while Clinton had been essentially written off the day before. RWC cheer the candidates of their choice, attack the others, sometimes with questionable assertions, and complain of MSM (mainstream media) conspiracies.
Those issues aside, one of the things that I love about comments is that they tend to be self-correcting. One writer's assertion is quickly denounced by another. But I continue to be perplexed about the life a lie can take. The most egregious example today is the repeat of the assertion that Barack Obama is a closet Muslim.
First let's deal with the alleged MSM conspiracy.
johnycheng1 said, "...the pundits were irresponsible in predicting Obama would win by 15 points or more just two days ago. There should be an investigation into that. Did these pundits have some hidden agendas?..."
errinfamilia wrote, "The empire strikes back in New Hampshire! You think it is mere coincidence that the two most inside-the-beltway candidates won New Hampshire? Perhaps it is a little odd that, the day before the NH primary, the mainstream media saturated the airwaves with Hillary and blacked out any airtime for other candidates..."
And pedjr336 said, "All the pundants and media should stop trying to control what our society thinks and how we vote and stick to reporting facts. It's sickening to hear all the endless chatter about polls and projections. I hope Hillary gets the nomination..."
Fordson61 said, "A major result of this election season so far is to demonstrate how damaging an unfiltered, unbroken media stream can be. Faced with filling endless space, journalists write endless nonsense... it is deeply harmful to efforts to elect the best possible leaders."
Finally, mollycoddle1 wrote, "What arrested obama's surge is the fact that a lot of people can see whose side the press is on. The favoritism is sickening. No one wants a candidate shoved down their throat."
Now a couple of examples of unfounded allegations and responses thereto.
102060 wrote, "If Hussein Obama wins, he'll do the swearing-in ceremony by placing his hand on the Quoran instead of the Holy Bible..." to which schoolmaster209 replied, "If he does so because that is his religion that's fine with me. This country was founded primarily looking for the principle of freedom of religion. Too bad we still have people who oppose that basic right!"
And MarthaP1, who shouted, "VERY SUSPICIOUS !!! How could Hillary win the N.H. primary when EVERY POLL showed Obama way ahead? I'll tell you how... the Clinton campaign BOUGHT SOME VOTES..."
Kathy5 replied, "Get a grip Martha - I explain it by the fact that she has substance without the carisma, he has carisma with no substance.
Unless you are one of those that was paid for your vote (past or present) your just spitting in the wind and trying to start lies and rumors that have no substance. Where do you get off?"
And finally, some analysis from our RWC>
walker1, said "McCain did not even get as many votes as Obama never mind Clinton. The Republican Party is doomed... The only hope for conservatives who have not already defected to the Democrats is Michael Bloomberg... Clinton and Obama are taking the majority of voters with them... Is it going to be an Obama-Clinton ticket for the Democrats?..."
kenrev said, "It pleases me to see the Obama momentum stopped at New Hampshire, for one simple reason: Obama is a "gifted" orator, who, like G. W Bush, can sell snake oil to anyone mesmerized by their carnival-barker skills... This is not to say that Obama is not qualified to be the next POTUS, but rather to say that thus far, the only skill that he has demonstrated is that of delivering spell-binding oratory..."
thompson1 wrote, "Okay, so the "tears" thing was effective; but that's not something that can or should be repeated lest Clinton appear too weak..."
But sukkee saw something else, saying, "... Hillary's choking by planted (?) question is working on especially, women voters. So, Obama's high-road tactics seem not working on women... Don't underestimate woman's brain or insult them. If not, we never have any chance to break up Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton dynasty in America."
MorganaLeFay gets the last word, in writing, "...Democrats are concerned about who can win. And they seem to be sophisticated enough to distinguish this from who tickles their fancy at the moment. There is some very serious analysis going on right now. This is not to say that either Hillary or Obama is bad, but the question isn't resolved and it is too soon to close the discussion..."

Cable news pundits may have successfully predicted John McCain's victory in New Hampshire, but they sure had a lot of explaining to do around 10:30 p.m., once The Associated Press and MSNBC projected victory for Hillary Rodham Clinton. "The polls were so wrong. So off," MSNBC's Keith Olbermann said. Perhaps exaggerating slightly, Olbermann added, "Two cable news networks actually predicted this outcome after Sen. Obama conceded."
