Politicians and Gasoline

With Democratic primaries coming up tomorrow in North Carolina and Indiana, candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama are on different pages in response to Republican John McCain's original proposal to halt the federal gasoline tax for a little while. Clinton is arguing that short-term relief will help the little guy; Obama is arguing the more complicated position of most economists that if gasoline taxes go away, people will drive more and prices will rise because of supply and demand and savings will be minimal. Our Readers Who Comment, for the most part, are ignoring the underlying economic arguments and simply cheering for their favorite candidate or deriding the other.

As By Perry Bacon Jr. and Shailagh Murray write today, "both candidates are betting that their rhetoric on the economy -- Obama insisting voters will reject easy answers, Clinton with her proposals for short-term relief -- will give them an edge Tuesday."

The federal gasoline tax supports a road-building program created in the administration of Dwight Eisenhower (a Republican) to bring us the Interstate Highway System. It and a transit-related subset are funded by a tax that has been increased during the administrations of presidents named Reagan (a Republican), George H.W. Bush (a Republican) and Clinton (a Democrat). The roads built by the tax have made it possible for us to live a long way from where we work and use a lot of gasoline. Our readers are ignoring this history too.

We'll start with akmzrazor, who wrote, "Well this is one area I have to say Clinton will have the advantage. Not that I think she is right, or even that she is sincere. She has the right message that will ring with lower-middle class and poor families. They don't understand the complexities of the economy so they will eat up easy answers like candy. Obama's message will be lost on them..."

mikey999 said, "If Hilary 'Rodham' Clinton... can paint a black guy from Chicago as 'elite' I will concede she is an excellent politician. [We] ...might just need someone who is a good leader that is able to extract us from Iraq..."

tydicea said, "Every time this woman opens her mouth, I cringe..."

And rmorris391 wrote, "I agrees the gas tax "vacation" is bogus, and does represent a serious energy policy. It is insulting to present this plan as a solution to high gas prices..."

birvin9999 is unhappy with both Democrats, writing, "...This clown Obama is worse than Bush - his economics involve spending the nation into oblivion. Hillary is just about as bad. My God, what has happened to the Democratic Party in the last 30 years? Hugo Chavez may as well run as a Democrat."

anarcho-liberal-tarian said, "Taking money from the highway fund will cost consumers more in the long run Hillaristas. Potholes, foregoing bridge repairs, being stuck in traffic all cost voters money in terms of time, repair, and costs to the economy. I think her propsal is Hillariously unfunny. Was this another proposal that came from Marc Penn?"

maq1 sounds a theme that appears in comments on most campaign stories, writing, "Hillary is running a self-interested race... She may be a clinton, but she acts like a bush. Get me off the bush-clinton merry go round!"

jsindc said, "Barack Obama is out of touch with working class people who have to DRIVE TO WORK. 18 cents/gallon is nothing for the latte liberal but it's real money for truckers and factory workers who drive their pick up every day..."

And infuse responded, "...Twice before when foregoing some portion of gasoline taxes the oil companies, the distributer and the dealer ended up with all the money, not the consumer... If you believe you're going to see an 18-cent drop in a gallon of gasoline, Hillary and McSame are setting you up for the big fall. Obama has this one right"

TALVES wrote, "Senator Clinton is supremely more qualified to be president. Obama is unelectable and the rookie senator shouldn't even be running for president. If we want to win the White House back in the fall vote smart. Vote experience. Vote Clinton."

kenmoyes suggested that "Watching the two Democratic candidates of late reminds me of an NFL game where your team goes into the prevent defense and you the fan shout WHY?... I am watching the Obama campaign go into their prevent defense in hopes of making it to the convention in the lead in both popular votes and delegates. I am also watching Hillary is in her two minute drill marching down the field..."

crrobin said, "...Hillary is asking big oil to pay for it [a gasoline tax vacation] and Obambi has no ideas calling it a trick? He's a weak Carter."

zb95 wrote, "Hillary gas tax gimmick will also result in a halt of highway maintenance and layoffs of workers."

mehuwss argued that, "Hillary's tax holiday proposal is indeed a small relief, but it symbols that Hillary understands working people... Obama does not understand that fifty dollars can make a difference to those out there who are struggling to make ends meet."

And we'll give the last word to 22101, who said, "I have no comment other than saying that I think everyone in this country is ready for the Presidential elections. Will we really learn any more about any of these people? We all just need to hold our noses and vote ;)

Hillary's proposed Gas Tax Holiday does NOT prove she is in touch with the working class. It proves she believes the working class is stupid and will rally behind her. SURE we are all sick and tired of high gas prices. And SURE we'd love some relief. And "sticking it to the oil companies" would feel GREAT! However, when we hand them that tax bill, they are going to have us in a choke hold, and will offer gas to us at double the cost of the gas tax or more! The OIL companies are crippling this economy, and will continue to do so. They set out to GLOBALIZE the world market for oil and they've done so. $10-$12 BILLION per quarter in profit, and yet they have the audacity to claim they aren't creating this "situation" And what REAL incentive does the US Government have to deal with it? NOTHING! Because the more profit the Oil Companies make, the more tax dollars the Government collects! We are on our way to a depression folks, and there's no "Silver Lining" or happy ending here. This issue is about far more than choosing the "right" candidate in November. It's about rethinking our foreign policies, reducing our dependency on foreign oil EVEN if it means drilling in Alaska. It's time to stop spending American $s on foreign aid, and spend time & money fixing the United States of America!

All Americans are now tithing one-tenth of their income to OPEC and U. S. oil company executives. Any oil company executive making less than a million dollars a year is shunned at the club as though he had dropped out of a religious cult.
But, oil company executives have decisions to make. Should they invest in shopping centers or condos?

My vote is for Hillary.

However, I find it very sad that no matter who we place in office, the entire nation is on a rapid decline. I'm only 21. But I remember a time when you could fill a tank of gas in a truck with $15, opposed to the current and possible $150 fill. Milk, a basic need, $6. I also remember when choosing between bying groceries and pumping gas, was not something you could play rock, paper, scissor to, and solve it.

With a republican in office, the rich get richer, and the poor / working class (like myself) get poorer. I really think that it is an injustice that prices on evrything is sky high.

The idiot that we have in office now, is just that! A completely oblivious moron who has no real clue as to what he has got us into.

Who ever goes into office will have to no doubt clean up his mess. How long will that take?

The economy is about as good as landing on cactus bare ass naked. That my fellow americans, is a huge understatement.

On the war.
It's utterly pointless and has been for the past few years. Why on earth are we still shedding young American blood? We should be bringing them home where they belong! Not out in the F*&%#@! desert fighting a bunch wanna-be martyrs whose only purpose in life is to destroy our nations soldiers. If our nations "Intelligence squad" is so "INTELLIGENT" and so highly skilled, why have we yet to find Osama?! This is not a war on terror!! This is Bush finishing off what daddy started! I believe that by the nations putting McCain in office, we are only going to continue in this pointless war, the economy will suffer more, gas will be higher, less jobs will be available, and the nation as a whole (with the exception of the republicans and the rich) will sadly crumble.

I am a proud Cuban American Citizen. But I am also a refugee in this great nation. My family left Cuba to give us a better life.

Here we are. This, this is what this great land, the land of the free has come to.

My vote is for Hillary.

If you give up being a slave to gas, especially for short trips to work, school, shopping, you take the power away from those that use it and put it where it belongs, with YOU !

We gave up gas in July 2007 and haven't missed it, or the money we would have spent on it.

We went electric at novascooters.com and commuting and just running around have never been so much fun, AND inexpensive.

GAS ?
We don't miss it at all, or care how high the price goes.

Gas is YESTERDAYS answer, time to move on with the technology of TOMORROW available TODAY !

Posted by: Get off the gas | May 7, 2008 10:37 AM | Report abuse

Temporary gas tax relief is sound policy, a much needed boost to confidence that will encourage some Americans at the margin to take that vacation at the shore, the lake, or the mountains. It will be a lifeline to some communities who rely on summer revenue to tide them through the winter.

No it's not the long term solution, but neither is that the point. All three candidates have proposals to reduce dependence on oil in the long term. Only Obama fails to understand the short term seasonal benefit.

Moreover, Obama's critique is incoherent...he says that gas tax relief will reduce costs and encourage people to drive more and consume more fuel, yet he also says that it won't make a difference in what we pay at the pump...huh? It's also fearmongering and disingenuous when he claims that the summer highway construction season will grind to a halt without gas tax revenues.

But more than anything else, it is yet another...ANOTHER...demonstration that Obama would rather give a lecture on what he thinks is economics or sociology than address authentic concrete needs.

If you don't know that the huge amounts of money funding the Clinton campaign to try and defeat Obama is coming in from the insurance and medical industry, that has been ripping you off, and killing you and your children. There is no bill in Congress to pass a gas-tax relief measure for this summer, so the issue is moot. Even if McClinton or McCain sponsor a gas-tax relief bill, it is unlikely that it will pass since these two jokers are alone on this issue.

Why Hillary's Gas Plan Works

Oil companies paying gas tax = No change in transportation construction or repair with no loss of jobs.

Oil companies paying gas tax = Lower gas prices because they'll drop prices to lower their tax payments on our behalf.
___________________________________
Everything else is right, but what in the world makes you think that gas prices will drop because the tax responsibility increases for the oil companies?

Based on the last 30 years I'd say prices rise to make sure the profit stays the same or *****surprise***** they rise even more so they can pay the increase in taxes and still pocket more cash. No matter what we lose as consumers.

Posted by: Mike | May 5, 2008 2:14 PM | Report abuse

McCain's idea to suspend the gas tax is bad. It will result in higher taxes in the long run, with a huge jump at the end of the summer just in time for winter heating bills. Prices are set by what the market with bear, and the data shows that the market will bear 3.40/gallon and up. There may be a slight decline at the time of the cut, but within a week or two, prices will be right back where they were, or even higher. Come the end of the summer, when the tax is reinstated, th price will jump by the full amount of the tax. Net result: Higher gas prices.

As bad as that is, Clinton's plan is worse. Not only will prices go up after the initial drop, but when the oil companies start paying the profits windfall tax (assuming it works better than it ever has before, which is a big assumption), THAT tax will be passed right along to the consumer. Net result: Higher gas prices.

Basically, we have three options here:

1) Deal with higher gas prices. (Obama)
2) Look like we're doing something, cut revenue, and deal with higher gas prices. (McCain)
3) Look like we're doing something, cut revenue, and deal with even *higher* gas prices. (Clinton)

Posted by: Benjamin Hinkley | May 5, 2008 1:34 PM | Report abuse

Do you know who actually pays the gas tax? Answer: the oil companies. Maybe if we cut their taxes, they'll lower prices. Fat chance!

Posted by: tom | May 5, 2008 12:18 PM | Report abuse

If Hillary were really for the working class people the gas tax holiday would be a permanent. What is three months and who is going to drive everyday just to get that 10 cent relief?!

Posted by: V | May 5, 2008 12:16 PM | Report abuse

None of these politicians are President so how can they even make this tax joke,I mean holiday work. Our 2 oil men in the White House don't seem to be in such a hurry to tax their buddies profits right now.Sounds more like Pandering to me,but that's for the journalist's to figure out.Oh wait a minute there might be something more important going on in Hollywood.

Posted by: Rick | May 5, 2008 12:09 PM | Report abuse

All of you who are blithely arguing that the gas tax holiday is nothing but pandering obviously don't get the problems facing many American families as the vacation season begins.

You no doubt can afford to go wherever you want, regardless of the cost. But how about those low-income people who live 800 miles or so from their closest relatives and are longing for a visit?

Or how about the working class parents who have been promising their kids a trip to Disney World for the past two years and now can't afford to go?

Evem worse, how about those low income people who are now cutting back on groceries so they can afford to drive back and forth to work?

To you the 18-20 cents per gallon savings this summer wouldn't mean anything. But a potential $5 savings per 25 gallons of gas could mean a lot to a low income family.

I'll say it again: when it comes to the average American family's struggles, Hillary Clinton gets it; Barack Obama and his followers live in an alternative universe, and they won't get it in a million years.

It's time the latte drinking, Prius driving, upscale Democrats realized that not everyone can afford their lifestyle.

HILLARY CLINTON CAN BEST WIN IN NOVEMBER:

It's time for everyone to face the truth. Barack Obama has no real chance of winning the national election in November at this time. His crushing defeat in Pennsylvania makes that fact crystal clear. His best, and only real chance of winning in November is on a ticket with Hillary Clinton as her VP.

Hillary Clinton seemed almost somber at her Pennsylvania victory speech. As if part of her was hoping Obama could have proved he had some chance of winning against the republican attack machine, and their unlimited money, and resources.

But it is absolutely essential that the democrats take back the Whitehouse in November. America, and the American people are in a very desperate condition now. And the whole World has been doing all that they can to help keep us propped up.

Hillary Clinton say's that the heat, and decisions in the Whitehouse are much tougher than the ones on the campaign trail. But I think Mr. Obama faces a test of whether he has what it takes to be a commander and chief by facing the difficult facts, and the truth before him. And by doing what is best for the American people by dropping out of the race, and offering his whole hearted assistance to Hillary Clinton to help her take back the Whitehouse for the American people, and the World.

Mr. Obama is a great speaker. And I am confident he can explain to the American people the need, and wisdom of such a personal sacrifice for them. It should be clear to everyone by now that Hillary Clinton is fighting her heart out for the American people. She has known for a long time that Mr. Obama can not win this November. You have to remember that the Clinton's have won the Whitehouse twice before. They know what it takes.

If Mr. Obama fails his test of commander and chief we can only hope that Hillary Clinton can continue her heroic fight for the American people. And that she prevails. She will need all the continual support and help we can give her. She may fight like a superhuman. But she is only human.

Sen. Hillary Clinton: "You know, more people have now voted for me than have voted for my opponent. In fact, I now have more votes than anybody has ever had in a primary contest for a nomination. And it's also clear that we've got nine more important contests to go."

Everyone likes a few extra dollars. I do not want the few dollars that I will save from the gas-tax moratorium just like I really do not want the tax rebate we are getting from Bush. The gas-tax will do nothing and cost the U.S. job losses, the tax rebate could have been spent on worthy projects. My preference is that the federal government give each state 5 billion dollars and the local government can stimulate its own economy.

It is time for us to hire, yes hire, a smart person for the highest office in the land so that we can get bang for the buck. We did not get bang for the buck with Bush and we will not get bang for the buck with Clinton or McCain.

I hope that NC and IN will put us out of our misery, and send a message to Clinton that pandering will not work. Their vote for Obama will send a signal that the ordinary voter is smarter then Clinton think they are. NC and IN please end this nonsense tomorrow, vote Obama for the sake of the good of this country.

Clinton's proposed gas tax holiday just made me an Obama supporter.

Her denunciation of economists as elites reminds me of past republican criticisms of democratic presidential candidates--Clinton, Kerry, Gore, Dukakis.

I want smart people--elite or not--running this country. Clinton needs to stop dumbing down her public policy.

Congress and the White House had plenty of opportunities to address the demand side of our high gas prices. But they didn't, instead pandering to the oil companies and automakers, by not raising fuel economy standards. No surprise then, that when Americans began demanding good fuel efficient cars, Detroit had no answer.

Maybe, one day, a candidate will grow some balls and go up against GM/Cargil on all this E85 bs.

Dear Fellow Americans,

Our Great-grand Nation, the United States of America
is and will face very critical "Challenges" in coming,
months, years, and decades. It is very essential that
we pick out next President on following criteria.

1. A candidate with "Vision and Statesmanship".

2. A candidate with " Stable Character and Morality" .

3. A candidate with "Presidential Temperament" and
"sound Judgment".

4. A candidate with "little Washington exposure" and
"connectedness with New voters".

5. A candidate who "Inspires us up" rather than
"Tears
us down".

In my professional opinion there is only one candidate
left, who bears all the above qualities aand that is
Honorable Senator Obama.

As an independent registered voter since 1974. I voted
for Carter, voted for Reagan, voted for First Bush,
and second Bush in 2000. In the process last interest
and stopped voting.

This time we can not afford to stay on side lines and
let Washington stay the same.

We can not afford our Greatgreat Nation to become less
than what we are and can be.

We need to send clear and candid message to the world
and some 24 hour partisan hateful media. These media
outlets are trying to deprive, dupe, and derail us
from getting it right this time.

They are trying there best to deny us better rather
than bitter future. { Our Greatgrand Nations people
are
persistently and constantly subjected to Psychological
terrorism" thru these hatful partisan media outlets.

We Americans are not going to allow them
psychologically terrorized us and silence the masses.
I am sure that we will get it right this
time and elect Senator Obama our next President. let
us not get dragged down into racism and sexism.

Let us remember that our Greatgrand is constituted of
family, fellowships, friends, faith, funds, fun,
future with fairness and freedom and without fear or
favor.

We can not afford to lose any of above. Let us stand
up, be counted, save, build our Greatgrand Nation for
centuries to come.

God Bless our Great grandNation, its diverse people.

Our future needs stability, security, safety,
sustained progress and restoration of our due status
in this perilous Global World at all levels.

While in Indiana, Obama isn't pushing for gas tax relief because he knows how bad the potholes are on 80/94 while driving through on his way to the beaches in Michigan....

Alternatively, Clinton is oblivious to poor quality roads. She has been chauffeured for too long.

Expert and Clinton supporter Paul Krugman will explain to you in simple terms why both McCain and Clinton are wrong on this one:

Why Hillary's Gas Plan Works

Oil companies paying gas tax = No change in transportation construction or repair with no loss of jobs.

Oil companies paying gas tax = Lower gas prices because they'll drop prices to lower their tax payements on our behalf.

Lower gas prices w/ no taxes = cash in YOUR pocket.

Lower gas prices w/ no taxes = less cost for truckers.

Less cost for truckers = lower cost for goods = more CASH in YOUR pocket.

CASH in YOUR pocket and YOU spending it means better economy. (versus the oil tycoons hording it and letting it sit in their bank accounts.

Obama dismisses this plan, yet, gives no solution of his own!

Facts are a stubborn thing. Obama cannot close his 20 year old relationship with Wright because there is so much video evidence against it. On the TV program THE VIEW, Obama declared that Reverend Wright accepted that his views of America were inappropriate and mischaracterized, that his words had offended many people. Then weeks later Wright goes on a national Hate America Tour? This was either a blatant lie; Obama using clever semantics to avoid the main issue. Or worse, Obama was fooled by Wright which is kind of scary. That a possible next president can be played by a character such as Wright. Check the video evidence yourselves.

And if the video is not enough: Read this in politico.com which calls on Obama to state the truth.

The gas tax holiday is nothing but big give away to the oil companies. The consumer will see little or nothing and fuel prices more than likely will rise as a result.

My vote is for Obama.
