Home Loan Anger and Deadbeats
The mortgage mess and legislation to help fix it do not please our readers who comment. They tell us how smart they have been to manage their own finances and keep their mortgages in order and they see no reason for Congress to help less fortunate homeowners or to prop up the credibility of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. They also attack the thousands of distressed borrowers who showed up at the Capital Hilton Hotel yesterday to attend a seminar on how to submit proposals to their lenders for lower mortgage payments.
Almost all of the comments on the two stories -- the legislation passed by the House and headed for Senate and White House approval and the seminar -- seem angry. There are complaints that congressional action will inevitably lead to tax increases; there are questions about why folks who found themselves over their heads should get help while those who have kept up with their payments won't be able to get lower rates.
There is an unusually direct number of comments calling those in trouble "low lifes" and several suggestions that green cards should be checked for those seeking help.
We'll start with a reasoned exchange on the story about the seminar for troubled borrowers.
CandaceJ wrote, "This is great news for homeowners in trouble, but what does this mean for new home purchases?"
To which knjincvc responded, "It means selling prices are going to drop, which will make it easier for qualified buyers to purchase homes. To those who would like to see buyers punished and loose their homes, be careful what you ask for because those people will have to rent which will drive rents up and property values down on empty houses..."
misssymoto said, "Can someone please explain to me why I should continue to pay the 30-year fixed mortgage on my house??!! These lowlifes are decending like locusts, begging for handouts on a house they know full well they couldn't afford to begin with--and then, NACA gets them 3% fixed rates on a 30 year fixed mortgage???!!!..."
Lavrat2000 concurred, writing, "Why should these low lifes get a 4.5 % interest if I can get that but have to pay my current price... This is a rip off for honest mortgage payers."
fredsfavefan asked, "...What about all of us that played by the rules? Where is our relief?... Owning a home is not a right, it is a privelage! Just becuase you want somthing doesn't mean you have earned it or deserve it."
matrox said, "My interest rate is 5.8%. I am fairly responsible and bought what I could afford and have no problem of paying my note, but I would love to get me one of those low rates mentioned in the article. How can I qualify? Do I just have to be stupid?"
To which snapplecat07 replied, "Matrox, if you made a well thought out plan to live within yr means, then yr out of luck. Only adults over 18 who have no clue on how to live within there means get a bailout, yes the short answer is u have to be stupid or at least play stupid."
panola60 said, "...I'm all for bailing out anyone who was subject to unethical predatory lending but this definition has now expanded to anyone with poor credit ratings or folks that claim they didn't understand how an ARM worked. I'm not buying it, nobody, but NOBODY is that stupid..."
rankcon said, "Looks like a bunch of illegals. They should be give one-way tickets back to Mexico."
And Efffyew2 suggested, "Send INS there to check for green cards."

Now to comments on the story about the legislation that passed the House yesterday. The White House supports and the Senate is expected to act soon.
Hoqenishy asked, "...Why do we continue to reward ignorance and stupidity among the poorest of our nation? Why aren't they allowed to fail?"
acindc007 predicted that "Folks, we are witnesses to history; the fall of the United States of America."
westling1 wrote, "Let's face it. You're a sucker if you bought a house you could afford and then paid for it as you agreed."
georgewbentley1 said, "Nothing new....the rich play and the taxpayer pays."
postfan1 wrote, "Sorry, can't blame W for this one. Congress is pushing hard to bail out those who have made bad decisions. Support the scammers and the ignorant over those who are conservative and responsible. Shouldn't the housing market be allowed to correct, rather than bailing out people who gambled on the market going up?"
cdierd1944 offered one of the few supportive comments in writing, "...Bush is actually doing something for the good of the country rather than making decisions on a strictly ideological basis. Where has this George W. Bush been for the last 7 1/2 years?"
We'll close with wowisdabomb, who said, "It is comforting to know that the President, the Republicans, and the Democrats are in unison in sending the country straight to hell. I will remember this in November when I vote 3rd party, or just stay home."

These posts are wonderful examples of that great modern motto of the corporation of the United States of America; 'Greed is Good'. Imagine, lamenting having to ante up to save the swindled from grossly unfair loans while those responsible walk away unimanigably wealthy. Act wronged because our fellow citizens were taken advantage of. Face it, most people wish they were the ones robbing this populace and getting away with it.

I don't mind using tax dollars to help those consumers who fell for the agressive marketing and loan practices...if it's used to help them set up housing they can sustain and support. But i get REALLY honked off that my tax dollars are going to be used to support the idiotic lenders and financing organizations that irresponsibly overspent. Why are our tax dollars and those of our children being spent to support bad business practices of powerful and wealthy organizations!

Why do we have to pay for irresponsible or ignorant people?. It feels like honest people are being punished. On top of paying full interest, we will be taxed to death to pay for the bailout.

Yes, the tone of those is very harsh, and I dislike the idea of just letting people fall into ruin. But it is incredibly frustrating to know that other people in my financial situation are getting help staying in their homes when I have no home at all--I knew I couldn't afford it! At the same time, I know I should realize that those are envious feelings that help no one.

There is no good reason to be mean. Most were treated as a crop to be harvested by the loan companies. Loan the money, sell the notes and take back the houses at will and sell them for much more. But the much more never happened. It was a classic bubble.
But some envy is here that is not appropriate. The average person in trouble did not buy a better house, they bought the last house that you lived in after the price doubled. Then the payments went up. Way up.
We have a history of "cram downs." So help people stay in houses they can afford and thank everything that it is not our problem.
