Palin in Alaska

Okay, the big vice presidential candidate debate is tonight. A good time to roll out the big Sarah Palin profile and a poll showing that she may now "be a drag on the Republican ticket among key voter groups."

The profile was written by Sally Jenkins, a Post sports columnist and co-author of Lance Armstrong's autobiographies. Some of our Readers Who Comment express amazement at what they see as a sympathetic article about Palin in "WaPo."

Others seem horrified at the anecdotes about Palin's childhood and what it's like to grow up in a vast wilderness where hunting and self-reliance are both endemic and essential. They ask: How does that background qualify Palin to be a heartbeat away from the presidency of what is increasingly an urban nation? With the exception of the economy, that seems to be the largest question emerging in this fascinating campaign.

We'll start with midas20874, who asked, "Sally: What is going on? Are you off the Sports beat or what is this story about glossy Palin?... I do not like smart people like you reporting on not so intelligent people like Sarah Palin... Come back please to where you belong!!!"

But sandyharb wrote, "Excuse me while I gag. WaPo cheerleads again for one of the least qualified, least capable, least competent people ever to weasel her way onto the public stage."

And annetta3 said, "I could hardly believe my eyes in reading this article, no snide comments, no unsubstantiated comments from people who bear grudges against Palin, and no rumors started by who knows. I had to make sure I was really reading the Washington Post... I don't think throwing a few crumbs, such as this, will change any minds that you have already helped set against her..."

concernedaboutdc followed by writing, "...the story underscores a perfect point. Palin is perfect as mayor of a moose, rabbit, wild bird eating community who live in log cabin communities where moose occasionally stop by sticking their head in to say hello. The story reads like Little House on the Prarie..."

PMcpatwork said, "And Alaska is where she needs to stay... She is utterly clueless about what it takes and the magnitude of the responsibility that comes with being President if things do turn out ugly..."

monk4hall wrote, "People. Please. Listen to Palin's responses on:
--What newspapers she does (or doesn't) read
--On a supreme court decision she disagrees with other than Roe v. Wade
--her tortured answer to why being physically close to russia gives her foreign policy experience
--the bush doctrine
On and on and on. I defy you to swear under oath that you truly think she would make a good vice president and, god forbid, president..."

AverageJane wrote, "After reading this I would say Palin was born 150 years too late to be VP. There is no mention of her intellectual curiosity. Something that was sorely missing during the recent interviews. And that is something that is deeply needed in this dangerous world."

cfeher said, "It's not that she doesn't have confidence. Heck, she's absolutely overflowing with confidence. What she lacks is knowledge. She is George W. Bush with lipstick."

OldCoot1 asked, "Just what does Alaska have in common with the rest of the 49 states and territories? We should have a mainstream person for vicepresident"

nfsbrrpkk wrote, "Palin does not demonstrate strength - only memorized one liners executed with a smile on her face... McCain did not choose Palin for her intellect or ability to lead - he chose her for political purposes and he has placed America at-risk."

motorfriend said, "Thank you for this wonderful series of family legends. Let us hope that someday every living creature will be shot and mounted in the Palin home after their flesh has been added to the family stew. She's one tough cookie, that Alaska gal! She's a regular Daisy Crockett!"

DR_MOM, referring to an incident in Palin's childhood when a bear attacked a caribou carcass strapped to the nearby family car, asked, "shouldn't a consumate hunter, inveterate naturalist, etc, know better than to leave a carcass where he is camping with his kids!?!?"

jcinsanmig2008 said, "Hmmm. I'm impressed. How about Sarah for Wildlife Coordinator. But the Vice-President of the United States???"

haymarketbill wrote, "Well, another nice puff piece on Palin. I guess that is all there is to write about her is puff. The lady next door used to bake us cookies. She was nice too."

We'll close with joebstewart, who said, "I like her and I like her Dad. I think this is a very good piece of writing and quite fair considering it is in the Washington Post which is normally so biased against Sarah Palin."

Thanks Bud0! I was beginning to think my opinion of Palin was an isolated one. It seems that too many people think that a touch of "commonsense" and minimum education will get you into the Whitehouse, to handle the trivial matters that the President has to deal with. After all just snap your fingers and a dozen advisors will give you their opinions--just pick one-- another problem solved!
If that was all it needed it would be no problem. Just face the facts--you have to choose between a tired old man, who hasn't really got what it takes. If he had--he would have been President years ago. What was his opposition-- Bush Jr! A moron! Why? He got into a war he can't finish! Everyone else has gone home because they knew it would never end. Except Bush Jr.
Or you can pick a guy who is obviously intelligent. Far more so than McCain or Palin. He hasn't been around Washington long enough to be corrupted, but he does have one problem. He's Black! But hold on. He's intelligent! You think maybe he's smart enough to be President? Colin Powell was black! That Rice lady is black! What the hell! Let's have a smart intelligent President for a change! Ain't had one of them for a while! (Maybe he could change his name to Oliver) Sound real classy then!

The "Us vs. Them" idea that many of the party-liners have is sad. When it comes to voting, too many people take the easy road. Take a little time and look at the issues. Does the candidate believe the way you do? Do your priorities match? Can the candidate affect change? This is really all you need to do. All the rest of the “He said, She said” stuff and the “I identify with this person because they belong to the same groups as me” are really all meaningless. It is also not about being on the right side or the winning side. The idea that you are good and anything that apposes you is evil is a farce. We are all just people so listen, understand, and decide on who would best be YOUR candidate.

DEMOCRATS ARE THE PROBLEM. The Dems in the 1990's expanded the Community Reinvestment Act which forced banks to make risky home loans to poor people or face expensive penalties. The Democrat/Government-run Freddie Mae/Mac guaranteed these sub-prime loans. So the banks made thousands of the sub-prime loans to risky individuals because DEMOCRATS mandated it. Warnings were made but the DEMOCRATS told everyone to stick it. Now that the DEMOCRATS and GOVERNMENT have cost taxpayers up to a TRILLION dollars to "fix" the problem THEY caused. Does the MEDIA place blame on the DEMOCRATS? Heck no, they are in the tank for OBAMA so the biased media is QUITE on the DEMOCRATS and their HISTORIC BOONDOGGLE. Now Americans appear to return to office the same DEMOCRATS who caused our financial meltdown in the first place and also reward them with a DEMOCRAT for President. Too bad the left-wing media won't hold DEMOCRATS responsible for this preventable fiasco.

Right wingers are historically known for fabricating “details” and promoting propaganda. Each time I hear one of them accuse some other of being ignorant of facts and information – I go for the kill. They thrive on manipulating others who are less informed, and debating on non-issues in loud voices and melodramatic gesturing. Firstly, you have folks who are inept at knowing how to successfully research that they cant legitimately following facts to begin with. Then it gets worse, as they easily fall for every whiff of propaganda.
Over the past 5 months or so I’ve taken about 38 of these people at their words, and shown them further facts. I discovered that rarely had they culled their “knowledge” from any resources of information provided by their own party. With an additional two or three other resources conflicting with their “understanding” they most always become silent for a few moments, especially when they realize that all their huff & puff was a display of foolishness. It’s like watching a pie hit a face in slow-motion. Most of them seem to make an effort at not crossing paths again. Hilarious. I don’t feel sorry for people who are sometimes ignorant, but indignant and lazy minded people deserve to taste the results of their own medicine.

Their habits are largely caused when they allow their ill emotion to get in the way of understanding basic logic, so much so that ignorance develops. A pride then leads the emotion and removes an ability to acquire even general wisdom, and leaves them operating in rote habit. It works perfectly for those who scan without reading, and others who sincerely don’t know how to determine cause & effect.

They evaluate issues lazily and half-assed, and when their own policies ultimately reveal results -- everyone comes to discover that their vision was (and is always) short-sighted and a waste of effort. They can't envision anything past tomorrow's lunchtime (which is a habit that I can understand left wingers being frustrated with). Even when their failures stare everyone in the face they have the gall to then cowardly point to others as being “uneducated” or “ill informed”. The dire results of their choices could plainly prove to be affecting them and they still wouldn’t believe it. Time and time again you hear right wingers bustle with emotion as they comment on statistics and “facts’, as though a loud voice is effective in deterring others to research for themselves. After so many opportunities of finding them to be flat out wrong most of the time I realize that they never knew the truth to begin with, so they chose to fabricate in hope of masking their ignorance.
Their party wasn't always this way; all it takes is a review of their party's evolution over the past 52 years to understand it all. Their concept of what education is continues to use an ethos from the Eisenhower era, and they follow it all as though the remainder of the world hasn't changed since then. More shamefully, they willingly allow unwise leaders to dictate their ideals. It's this type of ingrained egoist stance that causes them to remain 10 steps behind the progress of more successful countries and societies, selfishly dragging its citizens along with them. When you listen to them describe their political understanding and the world you realize that they can’t bare to reveal an ignorance of knowing how to establish real success.

Time for them to step outside their TV's, and improve. Don't allow McCain & Palin to hold you back... as you did with Bush Sr. & Quayle. Stop looking/falling for the "traditional" crap, and GET somewhere. Stop returning to the place where you last stepped in your own crap. Or, remain ignorant and out of touch with the possibilities of a better future, always. The rest of the world will let you have your way, and will have definitely moved on and left you behind.

If you’re going to pick a party, or even discuss any topic in true form, make sure you keep to facts.
And for goodness sakes, take a gander at the information supplied to you by your own party before you open your mouth.

No… I’m Independent.

True. Obama is an extremist. He will be too divisive for this country. To vote for a hard-left liberal like Obama over a mainstream politician like McCain is bizarre.

Then again, there are a lot of liberals who want to promote their leftist, anti-American agenda; BIGGER Government, RICHER Governement, BLOATED Bureaucracies, MORE taxes, HIGHER taxes, WEAK foreign policy, IMMORAL marriage, DEATH for more helpless human beings in the womb (or partially born), MORE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, etc.

@ Onefortheteam

Typical liberal comment. Republicans could give a damn about Palin's daughter being pregnant or Jamie Lynn Spears. You know why? Because they can pay for them. JL is a millionaire, as is her sister. Bristol's mom was the Governor. I don't have to pay for the kid like I do for the inner city kids. (Very liberal choice of terms btw, because certainly kids are never born out of wedlock anywhere else, and we're supposedly the bigots, yeah right.) JL can have as many as she wants. Any one can have as many as they want as long as they can pay for them. Talk to a Republican/Conservative before you make dumbass comments about what we think. Plus don't confuse evangelicals with us either.

Barack Obama is not qualified to be President. Regretably the mainstream media go out of their way to protect this big-eared doofus.

Barack Obama is a left-wing extremist. He and the media are trying to hide this fact in order to get him elected.

Go help us if the media wins and gets their Messiah elected.

Sarah Palin cannot name ONE Supreme Court Case. Not a ONE. She completely contradicted herself during th Katie Couric interview (saying she believes in the right to privacy - exactly what Roe vs. Wade is based on! DUH!!) She can't even name a newspaper or journal or any publication that she reads.

H E L L O !

Bottom line: Democrat or Republican, Sarah Palin is NOT qualified to run this country. You know it. I know it. I bet you she knows it, too. Stop lying to yourselves and distracting yourself with issues that MUST TAKE A BACKSEAT TO THOSE WHICH ARE MUCH MORE IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW!!

Why are the Democrats so upset over Palin?

Hell we all know Bubba would hit that in a heartbeat! ( Afterall he tapped Lewinski ;) )

Posted by: Johnny Bravo | October 2, 2008 3:48 PM | Report abuse

Palin has lived in Alaska almost all her life and does not have the ability to take over the job of President of the United States.
To say that Alaska is like a microcosm of the lower 48 is inaccurate. The climate there is hostile and housing is prohibitively expensive. The natives and citizens depend on the oil industry for their income both in jobs and through the permanent fund yearly check. The rest of the economy is largely pork barrel subsidies or tourism.
Not everyone can fish and hunt for food and there are homeless who frequently freeze to death.
The natives, who have always been poor, are democrats who inhabit the powerless edges of government, ignored by the whites and discriminated against.

Palin has managed to get herself elected not through knowledge of governing but though knowledge of her fellow Alaskans psychology. Her husband, who has no legal authority, helps her run the state and sits in on private meetings with legislators and the oil industry.
Because of her limited knowledge of government she reluctantly delegates remaining tasks and immediately corrects anyone who questions her or her husband.

Sometimes she does this by firing them without warning.

Being barely able to control a state with less people than most cities and being under investigation for abuse of power does not qualify Palin to handle the oversight of 300,000,000 people.

The myth of the Democratic party raising taxes on the common man was started by Republicans trying to distract from the fact that they only raised taxes on the top 1% of wage earners. Obama's tax plan will lower taxes for most of us while raising them for himself and Biden, as well as McCaine. McCaine's tax plan involves lowering most of our taxes slightly, while lowering the top 1%, including himself, a lot. This is one area where over 50% of Americans are missinformed. Perhaps it's the Republican half.

"Don't you realize that Republicans represent large corporate interests, greed, corruption, and complete selfishness (i.e. recent Wall Street crash, oil, etc.)?"

Economists agree (and have warned) that the wall street debacel is a direct result of Democratic party created and approved lending policies forced on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Economists have been jumping up and down with warning about the storm and the quotes are legion from the Democratic majority regarding the financial health of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

Of course, the general public has now way of knowing the financial health of Mae/Mac because their accounting is cloaked in secrecy. Something no other publicly owned business is allowed but is sanctioned by the Democratic creators of these insitutions.

Being uninformed is a hallmark of the Democratic voter. Long on passion, short in info.

When confronted by clownish figures, I laugh. Consequently, I'm having a great time watching and listening to John McCain and Sarah Palin. But I keep reminding myself that, although laughable, those two present serious dangers -- too many to cover in a short comment. But I do have source which explores all that concerns me -- the funny and the serious: http://weneedabetterpresident.blogspot.com. The humor is absurd but makes its point: We Need a Better President.

Second, Obama did not weasel his way onto the national scene he was elected and voted to his current spot. Think before you write stupid comments, you just make Republicans like myself that have actual brains look stupid!

First of all, this was in response to a person who said Palin was not mainstream America because she was from Alaska. So how mainstream America is Hawaii and Indonesia? Indonesia is not even in America, so that criticism is completely made-up especially for someone who is probably supporting Obama.

Second of all, how can someone say Palin "weaseled" her way to where she is now? Weaseling to me implies scheming and striving. She was picked. I am assuming she was not sheming and striving to be picked. I could be wrong but I haven't heard that side of the vetting process. Obama on the other hand did a lot of "striving" to get here from Chicago. Considering the way he knocked out his opposition in Illinois and considering the accusations he is facing from the governor of Illinois about bullying the press with legal scare tactics, I would rather consider Obama's means as "weaseling" as opposed to Sarah.

McCain is a man of reaction and Obama a man of logic. Over the course of the last few weeks McCain’s behavior has been erratic to say the least. Would his actions as president be as bizarre? I think a calm and measured response is best in a world full of crazy leaders. Adding McCain's impulsiveness to the mix could cause nuclear confrontation.
Some say Obama is inexperienced and too achedemically cool but isn't a cool hand needed in a crisis?
Did you ever see men like Colin Powell or Dwight Eisenhower lose their temper?
Obama's judgment has been almost flawless all through his campaign. There is no logical reason to assume he would do differently as president.

I'm amazed at Republicans who continue to think that their party represents "small town values". You have really been played by Karl Rove. Don't you realize that Republicans represent large corporate interests, greed, corruption, and complete selfishness (i.e. recent Wall Street crash, oil, etc.)? Don't you know that they are laughing at people who vote for them -- knowing how gullible they are? You vote for the very same folks that do nothing to support you. That makes absolutely no sense. They know that you vote based on who you view as "patriotic", and somehow you seem to believe that they are...??? I don't get it. In the meantime, they have robbed this country blind and ruined your children's futures. They don't give a hoot about the "small folk". They don't care about community. They don't care about anything other than their short term personal gains. They are complete crooks who are very skilled at the short sound bites, and playing towards the short attention span of most Americans these days. Heaven forbid that you actually think instead of repeating the buzzwords that you hear on the commercials -- and your beloved Rush Limbaugh site...

John McCain, like George Bush, insisted on forcing deregulation of the banks on the country. They and their friends in the republican party have profited obscenely driving millions of families into debt and foreclosure.
Hiding behind false patriotism, he, like
Bush, will bear most of blame for America's financial downfall.
Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
After 26 years in power so is John McCain corrupted.

I thought the article was fine, regarding her upbringing and character. I've read probably a hundred articles about her, but none like this. I liked your article. Is the Reader's Digest still going? I'm sure they would select something like this. You'd have to expand the bear attack scene though.

The problem is, the substance of her intellectual abilities are very much in question. The debate is not going to solve that. The complexity of world and national issues demands a first class mind, with a track record of intellectual accomplishment. Bush lacked this, in spite of his "legacy" appointments to the Ivy League, where he was party boy. We can't afford another dullard for president, who goes by their gut.

McCain is another "legacy" guy. Drunk too much. Wrecking jets. Hot headed. NEVER would have gotten his school or military appointments without his famous Daddy.

Palin is successful partly on her beauty, presence, personality and drive, but she's dishing out a lot of what others have correctly called "glittering generalities." There is nothing of substance in her entire history! I've read transcripts. Watched her debates from a few years ago.

When she tries to get specific, she gets scary. Palin has said some things that show how shallow she is, in understanding even basic things about the world and government. For example, she has a good gay friend, but she assumes that being gay is "a choice," which is claptrap taught by Evangelicals. I should know. I'm gay and was raised half charismatic Christian, tongues and the works.

There's nothing wrong with experience of knowing how to survive in the wild, except that civilization, by its nature, demands cooperation, compassion, intellect and some sophistication. Some people who attend 3rd rate colleges do have first rate minds, but it takes an extreme amount of work, and in this age, should include graduate study. Sarah does not have this.

I don't mind religious people who have learned from their parents, but most people need to grow by understanding the world is complex, by getting out there, including living in another culture, so they understand it is not just about the "good guys" and the "bad guys," and the religion in which they are raised.

She's narrow. She understands Alaska, but to disagree strenuously with her, Alaska is not a microcosm of the U.S. Your story is evidence of that. We need leaders who understand urban problems, and small towns. Of the two, urban problems are much more complex.

I grew up lower middle class, have lived in three foreign countries, read well in 4 foreign languages, went to grad school for languages, and wouldn't want me for high office in a million years.

The 27% of people who thing Bush has done a bang up job, are the core of Palin fans.

Let her host a TV show. Write a musical about her life. But don't vote Palin and warmonger McCain into office, please.

avgjoe: I definitely agree that there's too much hate in the political process and that it's easy to find noble intentions on both sides of the fence. Under it all, every politician is a mere mortal, wrestling with his own limitations at the same time he's wrestling with our problems for us.

Still, I feel obliged to point out the old saying that, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." Just because someone means well doesn't make him qualified or capable of doing his job, and no amount of good intentions can make up for the systematic use of immoral methods.

Ultimately, the country is in this mess because voters have consistently allowed themselves to be fooled into voting for smoke-and-mirrors issues; the old Roman acxiom of bread and circuses to keep the masses complacent.

To paraphrase the old saying: fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times, and we can all just stand back and watch the emperor fiddle while Rome burns.

Here's my perception of this year's race:

Obama: A smart man, a person that I would like to hear speak because he makes a listener think. Right or wrong, you do think. However, there is an old saying, "if you can't do, then teach". I think most of us would agree that some of our brightest people are in education. However, that does not mean that they can lead something other than a group discussion. I fear this is the case with Obama. Again, a good man but not my choice for our President but he is my choice for a lecturer.

Biden: Experienced in Washington, DC but has a tendency to stick his foot in his mouth more frequently than what the normal man of his stature. He has been around forever and knows all the players but is that really a good thing. I have my opinion, I'm sure you have yours. Have you looked at Congress' approval numbers. Remeber, three of the candidates are part of this and this particular one is not what anyone would call a maverick.

McCain: Someone who has had to make the tough calls in his life and continues to push forward in his own way to help steer a country that has often turned its head the other way. We are talking life and death situations people. He understands that what a person individually wants isn't always the best thing for everyone. But the choices have to be made and he has done so to the best of his ability. He knows what can happen in a war and he also knows the nightmares he lives with on a daily basis because of his choices, again, both right and wrong. Remember, the lack of making a choice, is making a choice. A President doesn't have the luxury of getting opinion polls on everything. This is part of being a leader.

Palin: New to the national stage but cares about what is right and is willing to put herself (and frankly, her family) at risk to make a difference. I won't apologize for her because I think she knows that it can only get better from here and frankly, so will she.

My choice is not necessarily your choice but I do believe that the Repubilican ticket is here for the right reasons. Is Sarah on the ticket for the right reason? I sometimes question this. However, I do believe she said "yes" for America and that includes both you and me. DC or Alaska? I would choose Alaska, hands down.

We are all rolling the dice on our personal decision for this election. What is the truth? What is a lie? I choose to go with what I can see, not what is promised. A person can promise you the world but can he or she deliver? Does the person even have the means to deliver what they are promising? Not after the last fews weeks. Are they willing to fight for you and make the tough decisions? Who do you think fits that description?

I'm willing to give to make the country better but I'm not willing to pay to make someone's life more comfortable because they want a handout. We need to learn from our mistakes and move on.

I was raised that if you want to get something, you work for it. I'm willing to fund programs that will put people to work. Our nation's infrastructure needs help. How about we do something about it and change our present and future. Online courses are an inexpensive means to educate dispalced workers. Roll it out to those who are unemployed. Train them, make them marketable with new skills but don't cripple businesses so that they aren't in a position to hire these newly trained re-entrants into the job market.

We are Americans and together we can change our nation and the world. To effectively do that, I believe that our nation's leader needs to be able to first lead. He or she must be able to not just talk a good talk but make a decision. Thinking is so imparitive but so is action. He or she must also be there for the right reason and that reason is you, me and the dream that is America.

Obama, prove to me that you can make an actual different in Congress and who knows, maybe I'll vote for you the next time around. You have potential but you need to prove to me that your words can become action. One other thing, try to move closer to the middle. Age seems to help a person with that last one.

tampalwayer: Let me make it super clear for you: If I was an employer and I asked questions that the interviewee did not like and threw a fit because I asked them, the person would not be working for me. Republicans have been liberal for years.

They have been liberal in their evisceration of the bill of rights.

They have been liberal in using tax money to fight a useless Iraq war.

They have been liberal in their use of deregulation to collapse and bankrupt the financial structure of America.

They have been very liberal with words like patriotism to cover their actions.

Obama seems conservative by comparison.

The truth be told everyone needs to VOTE it is our right, why complain, do something about it. Palin is a nice attractive person, who isn’t ready. Obama, is just as unqualified, but he is a politician and can bullsh-t better than most of them. Get out there and vote!! The Government works for us. The economy is heading in a bad place and it is only going to get worse. We can blame that on Bernanke and Clinton – Clinton passed a law to allow every American to get a mortgage, lenders lowered standards, people used their house as ATM’s, builders and developers took advantage  predator lenders, short sellers and a low interest rate screwed everything up. What happens now, our government that we elect use our money (which there is none (3 trillion deficit, so they print some more) and bail out the banks. Not WALL STREET – that’s next. No one can fix this – the market has to adjust on its own. So vote on issues, not Democrat or Republican vote for America.

If Palin can't command her own house, how in sam hell is she going to be Commander and Chief of our military. Her backward thinking is the reason her teenaged daughter is pregnant. The high and mighty speak of babies having babies in urban areas and how disgraceful it is. But it gets a pass if teens do it on the Disney channel (Lynn Spears)and now the Governor's house (and hopefully not the White House). She get's a D in parenting and no vote from me. I continue to be amazed at the lack of knowledge about the issues liberals display on these pages. Choosing a side is a right we all have but making baseless claims about Republicans, John McCain, or Gov. Palin is just stupid.

I don't know how we got to the point that our politics is filled with such hate of one another but here we are. Tonight, a professional politician, Joe Biden, will spew what the left wants to hear as he has for the past 36 years. We will hear a fresh person, not accustomed to the inquisitions we typically put people through when running for office and especially when we do not agree with their politics.

Gov. Sarah will perform well tonight if you like her. She will not perform well if you do not like her. Tomorrow we will all be sharing our views and they will look just like today's post. How sad it is that most of the people on this site will not even listen for differences between the candidates on the issues.

Arrogance, ignorance and greed have become the backbone of this country... now we must choose the lesser of the evils. This country needs to evolve with the rest of the world and not to rely on what worked in the past. The rest of the world is getting smarter, stronger and faster. The rest of the world do not envy us.. they look at us with disgust and comedy. Many of the McCain/Palin views are of church and state and will not work towards the future. In regards to Palin, she is best described as ignorant and the Couric interview proved that. The people voting for McVain and "Im(Palin)people" share the same type of ignorance. Now, for the ...losing count.....umpteenth time, he has changed his mind within last week ?

I dont know if its "bi-polar" or mild schizophrenia or what the diagnosis would read

He's a person, in power, with some VERY SCARY personality traits; I believe the clinical term would be "multiple disorders."
1. He's is highly erractic 2. He has a near uncontrollable temper when nobody is looking3. He has numerous character flaws 4. He appears to be a pathological liar when nobody is watching5. He has low or no tolerance for frustration
6. Has a near addiction to conflict with others 7. He makes very poor decisions

If the shoe fits. And this one really does.

Of all four of the candidates, there is only one...

Looking at the economic picture today, and looking ahead to tomorrow... Having seen vehicles loaded down just like there were during the GREAT DEPRESSION... Seeing business that were flourishing and expanding, hiring more help just six years ago... Knowing that there are many people, blue collar workers, in the American workforce that have not seen a "COST-OF-LIVING RAISE" in ten to fifteen years and their budgets have been stretched beyond the breaking point five years ago... We're going to "BAILOUT" Corporate America while the CEOs leave the companies with MILLIONS... And, leave the taxpayers to fend for themselves, plus shoulder the burden of the bailout... Knowing that Corporate America slit it's own economic throat by withholding cost-of-living raises from the workers... And, knowing that getting all those years of experience in politics is what helped us get to where we are now. Experience that seems to be a greater part of the problem, rather than the solution...

There is only one with any recent experience to know what it is like to have to stretch the household budget beyond the breaking point and still make ends meet. And, in that regard, she is the only one qualified for that office.

Obama has NEVER worked for a paycheck. The other two spent how many of the last fifty years, while this country was headed in this direction, doing WHAT? Listening to "ADVISORS" with FLAWED SCIENCE? Which of them did ANYTHING to "derail" the economy from getting to this point since so many of the American Workforce have been effectively living on a "FIXED INCOME"?

How many times, during the rest of this century, is Corporate America going to have to get bailed out? Doesn't anyone, not even those extravagantly over-paid CEOs realize that unless the American Worker has the money to spend on houses, cars, clothes, insurance premiums, medical and dental, and Christmas Shopping (A very good example. Look at the performance of shoppers for the Holiday Season of 2007.), there is no cash-flow and Corporate America has effectively committed BUSINESS SUICIDE? They did it, now let them WALLOW in it. It's the American Workforce that needs the bailout. When we have money to spend on their products and services, their economy will take care of itself. When the American Workforce no longer has to put all of it's money in the gas tanks and grocery stores, our economy will go back on track.

When the "FRATERNITY ON THE HILL" finishes doing it's thing... And it HITS THE FAN... Gov. Palin is the ONLY ONE that has any recent experience just how high we have to roll up our pantlegs to WADE through it.

Further proof that NBC and publications like the one this blog is posted under are going down. Don't post my reply. I will save it for the book I will make millions on. I have the truth. Go ahead with your left wing witch hunts "Troopergate" which is about to be thrown out and was started by the Democrats. Keep it coming. Keep the bashing going. Your stuffed suit is probably going to get in. Then all the smart people will take their money back offshore like they did during the Clinton years and you can pay for your own programs while your Democratic buddies are making 50-100M riding on your backs. Poor dumb libs.

If McBush and Palin were to be elected, I GUARANTEE that our country is going to be MUCH MUCH worse than it is today. I don't even understand why there is even a competition?! Look at what Republican leadership under George Bush has brought this country to!!! Enough is enough. Obama/Biden 08

One thing before I leave this thread for good.

DEMOCRATS AND LIBERALS! Calling the other side trailer trash, ignorant, and mocking the private lives of Sarah Palin only polarizes repubs and conservatives against your cause. It brings emotion into play when we should be appealing to reason, rational thought, and intelligence.

REPUBLICANS AND CONSERVATIVES! Personal attacks, ill-informed rants, and racist attacks only galvanize the lefts belief that you are all ignorant and spiteful individuals. It also gets them all riled up and spurs on their emotional/personal attacks.

SO HERE IS A THOUGHT! Let's try to be rational, reasonable people who discuss politics based on fact and merit. Based on what we see and hear in interviews and not what we reading Variety, People, or other mindless drivel. LETS USE OUR BRAINS INSTEAD OF OUR HEARTS.

THANK YOU AND GOOD DAY.

McCain claims legislation designed to teach young children how to recognize sexual predators was really comprehensive sex education including stds and birth control. The bill expressly says that all material was to be age appropriate. Planned parenthood has determined McCain's claims to be false. Still, he persists in his attacks during the Des Moines Register interview.
McCain disingenuous and reprehensible behavior brings to mind what Bush's campaign did to him with claims that McCain's adopted Bangladeshi daughter was really his natural offspring.
McCain and his campaign are corrupt. There is no honor in what he does.

Stan - Apparently reading government or historical financial data is not your forte'

ECONOMY CRASHES- Take a look at when Wall Street started to tank - Jan 07. Hmmm, what happened just prior to 1/07 -

Oh, that's right my little lemming - the midterm election when the moronic left took control of congress. Hey nice job guys.

HIGH GAS PRICES- have doubled since the Dims took control of congress. Hey, nice job guys.

2 WARS - That could have been prevented if Clintosky removed his slick willie from Monica mouth long enough to respond to the first WTC attack.

JOB LOSS - Employment rate under Bush was higher than Clinton until - guess when - The Dims took control of congress.

BANKRUPTCY - The numbers have tripled since guess when one last time - that’s right- the dims took control of congress.

Maybe instead of pointing out inaccurate crap about Republicans and looking like an imbecile, you might be better served just changing parties and do a "replace" function on your post and insert dimocrap instead.

Just a suggestion.

And you all embed you daily lives reading liberal blogs and outright lies. Remember...just because it's on the internet doesn't make it fact!

But here's one fact. Obama was affiliated with a organization called ACORN (remember how he was a community organizer). Well, this group spent every waking moment harassing and bullying banks and credit unions to give loans to risky individuals. So, it is not a stretch to link obama to the current financial crisis. That is fact!

Palin can speak well in a debate if she knows what she is talking about.
The problem is that she has trouble remembering the talking points that they give her.
In the 2006 gubernatorial debates in Alaska she gave detailed and cogent responses to questions while sitting at a conference table with two male candidates.
Nothing seemed to be memorized.
However, in this Thursday’s high stakes environment, adlibbing answers to debate questions would be disastrous for someone with Sarah's limited knowledge.
No matter what strategy she employs there are bound to be some awkward moments when she goes to the well and finds it dry.

Obama never received a food stamp in his life. First, I don't think there are food stamps in Indonesia [where Obama lived until he was 10]. Second, if he was receiving food stamps while attending the prestigious Punahou School in Hawaii, then someone needs to start an investigation. I think the blogger forgets that Obama moved to Hawaii to live with his mother's family after Indonesia -- and there's nothing wrong with that at all. But please leave the false food stamp sob story where it belongs.

After reading all these comments, I have decided that it doesn't matter that we don't really know Barack Obama's legal name or nationality (see lawsuit in Federal Court in Philadelphia about which WaPo is dead silent); it doesn't matter that Obama can recite the Islamic call to prayer and calls it "the most beautiful sound on Earth at sunset" (see Nicholas Kristof interview March 2007); it doesn't matter that Obama traveled to Karachi for vacation during his college years with one of his three Pakistani roommates; it doesn't matter that Obama's preacher calls on G-d to "damn America" (see YouTube); it doesn't matter that in 2003 Obama was hanging out with PLO operatives, folks from Electronic Intifada and domestic terrorists from the Weathermen (see Peter Wallsten, LA Times April 10, 2008); it doesn't matter that Obama has private meetings with Hezbollah agents (see Debbie Schlussel); it doesn't matter that Obama's biggest supporter is "the man who broke the Bank of England" (see Google); and it doesn't matter that Obama took more money from Fannie and Freddie during his short stint in the Senate than anyone else in government, save Chris Dodd (see Open Secrets dot org).

All that matters is that Sarah Palin's housekeeping and babysitting situation is not conducive to her serving the country. Thanks for the "enlightenment."

The general level of ignorance regarding Alaska in these comments is staggering. The vast majority of the population is not so different than anywhere else in the country, though there are rural areas that make up a relatively small percentage of the population. We don't have to live in two room cabins with an outhouse, and we don't have to subsist and be pro hunters to have food on the table. Most of us go to the supermarkets just like the majority of the country, we have normal jobs not unlike anywhere else, and we are as much a part of the union as any other state. Most people around here hunt and fish for sport or for cheaper, higher quality, and fresher food than is available from the big box stores.

Alaska and Alaskans aren't so different as many people seem to think. Folks should not be so quick to ignorantly characterize and stereotype people and locations they know next to nothing about.

That said, Palin has proven herself to be a fantastic leader here. She has taken huge steps to cleaning up government and has done really good things for our economy. I won't claim that she is as intimately aware of the nuances of foreign policy as people who deal with those issues on a regular basis, but she is intelligent and far from clueless. If she were the governor of any other state people would not be hammering her so hard on foreign policy... there is this ludicrous perception that Alaska is so far removed from the rest of the world that we don't pay attention to what is going on internationally.

What about John McCain and the Keating Five. That worries me more because of the parralles of the current market crisis. I have not heard Fox News mention that one time. They have not done any hard hitting stories on the Republican candidate. The only "personality" ( I use that term loosely) that seems to even try is Greta Van Susteren and it is obvious she can't be neutral. The republicans are always yelling "they are in the Tank" but it is obvious who they are in the tank for. I don't want to call any republican a redneck or resort to name calling but sometimes your post defy logic. I happen to know a lot of rich elite republicans who don't give a damn about family values or American ideals. They just want to stay rich. I was told point blank by the stauchest republican I know " I don't give a damn about abortion, gay marriage or gun control but the Republican Party will make sure that I stay rich." If Biden or Obama had been covered in the media the way that Palin has there would be no end to the outrage the left would display. Most of the post and even news articles that I have read shows hate not for the policy of Palin but of Palin herself.

As for ACORN it's employees (or volunteers) has been connected to voter fraud and it was all on the democratic side. Then the democrats in congress wanted to give this organization 20% of any profits that were espected be made from the bailout. ACORN even forced the banks and loan institutions to give morgages they could not qualify for contributing to the current mess.

Obama (the democratic left) even had a supporter who on Fox News who expressed support for the nationalizing the oil companies. The left is for more wealth distribution instead of impowering the "poor" to earn more wealth. ( I'm one of the economicly disadvantaged). We are the only nation in the west who could field an army if needed incase of war. The left has always in my view over the last 50 years cut our defense to the point in some cases that we could not have fought our way out of a wet paper sack. We cannot let that happen. I oppose Obama/Biden for their OVERALL policy and the way they would take this GREAT COUNTRY eventhough I might have some support of some of his plans

Right wingers are historically ignorant of how progress operates, mostly due to allowing their emotions to get in the way of understanding basic logic, so much so that their pride overtakes the ability to acquire even general wisdom.

They evaluate issues lazily and half-assed, and when their own policies ultimately reveal results -- everyone comes to discover that their vision was (and is always) short-sighted. They can't envision anything past tomorrow's lunchtime.
It wasn't always this way; all it takes is a review of their party's evolution over the past 52 years to understand it all. Their concept of what education is continues to follow an ethos from the Eisenhower era, and they follow it all as though the remainder of the world hasn't changed. More shamefully, they willingly allow unwise leaders to dictate their ideals. It's this type of ingrained egoist stance that causes them to remain 10 steps behind the rest of the world, and drag the nation along with them.

Time for them to step coddling their TV and incapability, and improve. Don't allow McCain & Palin to hold you back... as you did with Bush Sr. & Quayle. Stop looking for and falling for the "traditional" crap that gets you nowhere in the end. GET somewhere, right wingers. Bring something valuable to the nation. Or, remain ignorant and out of touch with the possibilities of a better future, always.

More likely he will use this knowledge for the betterment of the establishment, to further enslave the American people.

If people really want a future they will always vote "conservative" It they want someone else to pay there rent they will vote "liberal"

P's and VP's get briefed on any issues they will be dealing with. they are poster children for there parties in most cases.

The candidate who will buck tradition and protocol in the interest, and on the behalf of this republic and its people will be the best candidate.

Why is the so-called "liberal" MSM not concentrating more energy into digging up and publishing the transcripts of Sarah Palin's speeches to members of the Alaska Independence Party, (AIP), at their "national" conventions?

The LA Times' Mike Finnegan wrote, on Sept. 3, that Palin had addressed these secessionists, both as Mayor and as Governor.

Todd Palin was a member of that kooky fringe group for seven years; why isn't this fact being publicized more?

If Senator Obama's wife had been a member of a secessionist party, we'd never hear the end of it.

No, the MSM is not acting like "liberals" on this important point. On this issue, the media are acting as if they are intimidated or just plain lazy.

In my state, secessionist talk is taken rather seriously. New York State lost thousands of soldiers during the American Civil War; total military losses, on both sides, are estimated at some 618,000 souls. Many thousands suffered horrific wounds and mental trauma.

The Alaska Independence Party is an insult to the sacrifices that were made in order to preserve our union of states.

Sarah Palin's flirtation with secessionist views should factor into the debate, but sadly, the media has not made much of a fuss over this. Why not?

I challenge the Washington Post to find and publish the transcripts of Palin's speeches before the AIP.

I'm really tired of all these nasty comments about "trailer trash". I live in a 3 br 2 bath mobile home in a quiet, landscaped park. My home is paid for and I have no credit card debt. None of my family have ever been in jail and all their children are legitimate. We are every damn bit as good as people living in quarter million dollar homes who can't make their mortgage payments.

Liberal love, yes and thanks. I am a 62 yo grandmother, our household income is over $400,000 (not a lot, but OK) and yes I believe that people in my income bracket should pay more taxes, that every citizen should have access to education and health care.
Senator McCain’s plan to provide a $5,000 refund for health expenses ignores two important factors: 1. Many people are denied health insurance due to pre-existing conditions. 2. Those who need the most cannot even afford to pay the deductibles/coverage and given a choice of paying for a roof over their heads and food, they are forced to opt for the latter.
Early childhood education is the best prognosticator of employment and low crime. We invest in jails, yet we are not willing to be pro-active and invest in the children who our future.
And for all the fear mongers, HUSSEIN does not scare me any more than MCVEIN (remember Okalahoma?). Extremists of any persuasion are to be feared, and that also goes for Christians. By the way, SARAH is also a Muslim name.
Once again, thanks for referring to ME as a LIBERAL LOVER! May I refer to YOU as a conservative HATER?

I wonder if the Democrats would agree to some sort of separation? A dual government. So that we conservatives can govern our way, and the liberals can do it their way. We had a strong central government once; but we thought of a better way and crossed the pond to set up a small one. I think we're on the way back to Europe.

Actually, ewoh24, if you owned a business and were interviewing job applicants, you can't just ask them what you please. For example, if you asked the female applicant a completely different, more obtuse set of questions than the male applicants, you'd wind up speaking with the EEOC. In fact, your case would get even tougher when the EEOC found that you had asked about the female candidate's ability to do the job with 5 children and you didn't ask the same question of the males. Then, if there was a record of you making sexist remarks about females, if not the applicant herself, well let's just say you'd be looking at a hefty judgment.

Palin failed college not once, but twice and took 7 yrs just to get a 4yr degree.
Palin had an affair w/her husband's business partner 5yrs ago.

the only reason someone could possibly vote for this woman is
because they are racists beyond belief or they are super duper ignorant.

this woman is pure trailer park trash w/$

If you idiots think being a mayor of a small rural community in the backwoods qualifies you to possibly run this country you are so damn stupid even a cave would find this crazy.

this woman does not represent this country(just watch your tv)

The mainstream news media, Hollywood and the Democratic party, all far left liberals tore into Sarah Palin within hours of first hearing of her selection to run for VP. Knowing that these groups are smarter than the rest of us(at least they appear to think so) I believe they knew that the person to be picked would be an awful person even though they had no idea who that person would be.

Those who want our country to adopt the morals and patriotism of Hollywood will vote Democrat. If enough people follow that approach we can loose this wonderful country.

Please think for America before voting.

Go ahead idiot - explain it for the masses!!!"

Thats easy. The bill was a turkey that languished because even the Repubs though it stank. It was sunk with bipartisan support.

You are aware that it was introduced in Jan 2005????

(a) IN GENERAL- The Federal Home Loan Banks shall be exempt from compliance with--

(1) sections 13(e), 14(a), 14(c), and 17A of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, and related Commission regulations; and

(2) section 15 of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, and related Commission regulations, with respect to transactions in the capital stock of a Federal Home Loan Bank.

These are the facts:

1)The bill was an attempt to privatize regulatory agencies. Hence, Democratic resistance to it. Hence, even Republicans voting against it.

2) The bill did nothing to address fraud and tighten oversight. Hence, Democratic resistance to it. Hence, even Republicans voting against it.

Biden himself said that he is not the best choice. But then again, he was watching TV in 1929 with FDR! Is he really the smarter of the two VP candidates?

Sarah is only considered a drag on the party because she has been (wrongfully) shielded from the media. She was selected in part because of her 80% approval rating in her home state.

Much better than the 9% approval rating of the Democratic Congress and the 30% approval rating of the last 8 years--to which McCain has been compared.

Now, I must exhort all intelligent people to start having children and to educate them, as they have been educated. If we can't get rid of the ignorant people in this country, we need to outbreed them (a tough task), so we can ensure that the right candidate is always voted into White House.

I’m a senior independent voter. I vote just a little right of center, which polls show most Americans agree with. I am disgusted! I have never seen such vitriolic bashing of a candidate and double standard used by the liberal press and their owners and followers in my many years of watching politics in the United States. It has become obvious with anyone with half a brain that the press has lost all integrity in reporting. Most of the articles I read trashing Mrs. Palin coming from the left are written by idiots. There is no other description.

As for this presidential team, a person who opted for non-preferential treatment by his captors when he could have had it much easier – and a person who keeps and loves a Down-syndrome baby – this says something powerful about their character. We will find out if Mrs. Palin can hold her own in the debate and in the political turmoil in the weeks to follow – but at least give her the respect deserving of a vice-presidential candidate. No other candidate has been shown the one sided trash she has received in this election. The truth is, if she were a Democrat coming from Alaska there would be none of this.

Palin has a hard time answering simple questions because she is not answering them herself anymore. She is trying hard to remember what her coaches said, and what her handlers would tell her was the right answer and she has not had enough study time yet to remember all the answers. When McCain claims they are just "letting Sarah be Sarah" I almost fall out of my seat laughing at the ridiculousness of it. LOL

Posted by: Anonymous | October 2, 2008 12:27 PM | Report abuse

it is interesting that when Obama was first announced, the conservative side was up in arms about inexperience and age and everything and the democrat/liberal side was defending him saying anyone can lead, anyone can be president, he fits all the qualifications, experience doesn't matter as much as judgment and character, etc.

And now the table is turned. Palin is the "inexperienced VP," she's being judged based what she COULD end up being ("heartbeat away"), I'm being told that she's far too inexperienced and normal.

So what is it, guys. Do you want CHANGE (not the same politicians, not Washington, but rather an actual ordinary person) or do you want NO CHANGE (Obama and the same old, Yale/Harvard/Whatever lawyer, using the same campaign tactics, etc).

I just don't get the double standard. One promised to bring change to Washington and change the way it works - he turned out to be just using that as a slogan while continuing in exactly the same elitist way ("everyone we know are lawyers"), and yet when an ordinary person comes along that may not be a lawyer and may not be able to talk her way out of anything, but is an actual American that didn't get brainwashed at Harvard in how to argue both (meaning, all three...) sides of anything, she's accused of being stupid, ignorant, and fit to be mayor of moose? And she has the HIGHEST approval ratings of ANY governor? So I guess you guys must all think Alaskans are just as stupid as moose, since she's doing such a great job in Alaska. I suggest you go apologize to all the Alaskans.

*sigh* McCain is far from what I would have picked, Palin is far closer to what I think the government SHOULD be like. She's a normal person (which the elitist liberals hate about her), she's not trained in the art of never admitting you're wrong but always twisting what you and everyone else said so that it best fits the moment.

Disclaimer: I am a long-time Republican. That being said, it is amazing to me the vitriol that has flooded blogs like these. When did personal attacks substitute for logic or legitimate debate? It seems half of the people here can't distinguish between what Palin actually said or what Tina Fey said parodying Palin. For example, Palin never said "I can see Russia from my back yard," Fey did. Yet the bloggers propagate this false quote as gospel. Moreover, attacks about her looks or family choices are simply sexist and personal, as they were when made against Hillary Clinton. Point 2: Palin is vilified and labeled stupid because she attended several schools before finally getting a degree. Of course, Obama went to the nicest prep school in Hawaii [it's amazing that the same people who mocked Bush 43 as a silver-spooned, spoiled kid suddenly forget Obama's comfortable prep school, Ivy League upbringing and then mock Palin's somewhat pedestrian background], Occidental College, Columbia and Harvard Law. Being smart or even brilliant doesn't mean you'd be a great president. Jimmy Carter essentially was a nuclear physicist [Naval Academy degree and service on nuke submarines], but fair minded people would agree, at a minimum, that his presidency left a lot to be desired especially as to foreign policy. Bush 43 actually had a better GPA than Kerry at Yale, and I'll leave it at that even as a Republican. Obama may have been on Law Review at Harvard but that doesn't necessarily translate into being an effective president. Knowing what certain Supreme Court opinions say verbatim is great for your Con Law I exam, but is it really something you need to be able to quote for Katie Couric? It seems JFK was a U.S. Navy war hero -- does McCain get the same kudos for that? Reagan went to some obscure college in Illinois, was an actor and was a governor with no foreign policy experience whatsoever when elected. Clinton likewise was the governor of a somewhat less than large state and, again, had no foreign policy experience, and, fellow Republicans forgive me, was a decent president in some respects. If you really want the recent president with the most foreign policy experience prior to being president, look at Bush 41: envoy to China, U.N. Ambassador, CIA Director, Vice President -- and he was a good foreign policy president [not so good about the economy -- "read my lips"]. Just try to stick to the facts and lose some of the hate -- if you haven't noticed, times are tough and fighting and insulting each other isn't going to help anything. Let's just see how tonight's debate goes -- Palin will get whipped or maybe she won't, but next week, be sure to quote her and not the inevitable Tina Fey caricature to come Saturday night.

Palin is going to wipe the floor with that moron you guys have in the VP slot. Seriously, the guy creeps out normal America. And every time the press churns the inexperience shtick, guess who defaults to the forward position on that issue? I mean, what are you people thinking? If she is not qualified, he certainly is not. There is a reason why Democrats universally wince when the words "community organizer" are mentioned no matter the context. It is because it is SAD that is all you have to describe his bona fides to be President!

THE MYTH: "She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her
predecessor and sold it on eBay. And made a profit!" — John McCain, at
a campaign stop in Wisconsin

THE FACTS: No one bought the jet online. It was eventually sold
through an aircraft broker — at a loss to taxpayers of nearly
$600,000.

THE MYTH: "I told the Congress 'Thanks, but no thanks' on that Bridge
to Nowhere." — Sarah Palin, convention speech

THE FACTS: Supported the infamous pork project in her 2006 run for
governor, even after Congress had killed the bridge; derided its
opponents as "spinmeisters." Reversed her stance a year later — but
kept the money, doling out the $223 million in federal funds to other
pork projects throughout the state.

THE MYTH: "We ... championed reform to end the abuses of earmark
spending by Congress." — Sarah Palin, convention speech

THE FACTS: As mayor, employed a lobbyist who also worked for Jack
Abramoff to secure $27 million in pork spending for Wasilla — more
than $4,000 per resident. In her two years as governor, requested $453
million in earmarks. Alaska ranks first in the nation for pork, raking
in seven times the national average.

THE MYTH: "I found ... someone who stopped government from wasting
taxpayers' money." — John McCain, introducing Palin

THE FACTS: Signature accomplishment as mayor: building a $15 million
hockey arena that plunged the city into debt. Broke ground on the
project without finalizing the city's purchase of the land; the
resulting fiasco cost Wasilla $1.3 million — roughly $200 per
resident.

THE MYTH: "Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not
solve all of America's energy problems — as if we didn't know that
already." — Sarah Palin, convention speech

THE FACTS: "I beg to disagree with any candidate who would say we
can't drill our way out of our problem." — Sarah Palin, July 2008

THE MYTH: "We began a nearly $40 billion natural-gas pipeline to help
lead America to energy independence." — Sarah Palin, convention speech

THE FACTS: With federal approval years away, not a single section of
the pipeline has been laid. State could end up paying the pipeline's
contractor $500 million — even if it never breaks ground on the
project.

THE MYTH: "She's from a small town with small-town values." — Fred
Thompson, convention speech

THE FACTS: Wasilla and the surrounding valley recently named the meth
capital of Alaska, with 42 meth labs busted in a single year.

THE MYTH: Palin has "taken on the political establishment in the
largest state of the union." — Fred Thompson, convention speech

THE FACTS: Served until 2005 as director of fundraising group
associated with indicted senator Ted Stevens.

THE MYTH: "She's fought oil companies." — John McCain, introducing Palin

THE FACTS: Collected $13,000 in campaign contributions from oil and
gas lobbyists, including Exxon, BP, Shell and Chevron. BP was a
sponsor of her inaugural ball.

THE MYTH: "She's been to Kuwait. She's been over there. She has been
with her troops. The National Guard that she commands, who have been
over there and had the experience." — John McCain, highlighting
Palin's national-security credentials

THE FACTS: Never had a passport before 2007, when she made a brief
photo-op trip to visit troops in Germany and Kuwait. Has never been to
Iraq, and has not met a single foreign head of state.

THE MYTH: "I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful
spending." — Sarah Palin, convention speech

THE FACTS: As governor, sought travel reimbursement for 312 nights she
spent in her own home.

Those of you who keep throwing in Hussein being Barack's middle name, please answer a question for me? Exactly which Hussein are you trying to link him to? There are millions of men and women who carry that name, so I am not sure what you are trying to say. Oh wait, are you trying to insinuate that he is a muslim? Oh, I see, he must have chose that name for himself then. No? Maybe it is a symbol of the way he was raised? By his white grandparents from Kansas, or his white mother who was an atheist? Oh wait, maybe you mean to say he is Arab becuase he has an Arabic name.....I thought his dad was from Kenya?

OHHHHH....now I get it!! You mean to connect him to Sadam Hussein, right? I guess Barack Obama must also believe in gassing people who oppose him, right? Maybe we should be worried. Thanks for pointing that out.

I can't believe the amount of hate I see in the posts from the readers. I see people who honest to God HATE Bush, republicans, Palin, McCain...anything that resembles something conservative. I'm a fairly moderate person and find certain policies from both candidates attractive; when I hear what I would consider to be my "intelligent" friends (liberal OR conservative) they talk about how much they HATE the other candidate. It makes me sick that we the people and our media have shaped politics this way.

For those liberals who honestly blame this economic situation entirely on Bush and his administration: let me remind you that the Democrats wanted more minorities to own homes (good on them...I agree). However, they went about it by pressuring Fannie Mae into buying sub-prime mortgages in 1999. Reference the NY Times if you have any doubt to the accuracy of this statement. That in turn caused more banks to lend to subprime borrowers, leading to skyrocketing home prices, and on and on.
My point is, don't be so quick to hate and blame one party or another. Though our methods may differ, each has honorable intentions (normally).

Palin: the perfect candidate for those who wish they were running the world, even though they know nothing about the world at large, know nothing about anything outside of their community or have ever wanted to learn or read about it, the perfect candidate for women who want to feel more important than they are (yes being a mom and having a job is important, but it is not running the most powerful nation in the world), for men who want a vice-president (or future president)they feel like they could go out and down a sixpack with and kill some animals, and for religious people who feel like they should control everyone in the USA without regard for separation of Church and State. Palin is the perfect choice for voters who don;t know what is going on in the big world and for those who don't care about all of our serious problems that we are facing as a nation and internationally. Palin is the perfect choice for those who want another dumb person like George Bush to take over and cement our slide into the cesspool we are into our waists up to.

Like it or not, these debates, gaffes, and qualifications (or lack thereof) may mean absolutely nothing on Nov 4th. Diebold, the company that manufactures the electronic voting machines, has a firm grip on the voting results. And the Republicans have a firm grip on Diebold. It's baffling to me why no one is addressing this anymore, anywhere. Bush "won" the last election via Diebold. Just do a Youtube search for "voting machines, fraud, CNN". This is not some crackpot conspiracy theory made into a student film and posted on youtube. This was mainstream media, for about ten seconds. Love or hate Palin, McCain, or Obama - it won't change the fundamental reality that we've allowed politicians to strip us of a fair, verifiable voting system. Just months ago, the Republicans blocked a Bill that would have required a paper-trail, a receipt system that would allow verification of electronic votes. They claimed it was "too costly" and "too close to the election to be practical."
There was no uproar, no protest, and little notice. No one seems to be aware this is going on. Instead, we focus on some babe who can shoot a Moose, or a bitter old politician who unconvincingly spouts what he feels he has to in order to become President, or the "missing qualifications" of the new kid on the block. Just watch. To our stunned amazement, the Republicans will steal this again. The media will suppose it really WAS close after all. And the country will shrug, just as it did four years ago. That will be the end of the American Empire.

McCain is a gambler, both in the casino and in politics. He detests Mitt Romney, and his party would not have liked it if he had added Lieberman or Ridge to the ticket. So, without during a thorough vetting, he rolled the dice and picked Palin. She has thrown them off message before they ever got on message, and McCain squandered the months while Obama and Hilary were still slugging it out. Now he has the gall to go on Fox News and respond the question of why Obama is ahead, "Life is not fair". He did not "suspend" his campaign. Every single McCain office in the country was running full steam ahead while he was in Washington. He took a chance trying to cash in on the economic crisis, and lost. Now he is in Iowa, where Obama is 20 points ahead, which promped an Iowa Republican to respond to a question about McCain strategy, "What strategy?". Old, white men have been running this country since inception, and now a black man has a chance at the highest office in the land, and you don't think life is fair? McCain is one of those guys who has sat around in Washington for decades, waiting for his turn to be President. He is a good Senator, but not very organized or strategic. If he had not been so busy getting in his own way, maybe he would not have gambled away his last chance to be President. Considering the mammoth incompetence of the McCain team and the desperate gambits that have come up snake eyes, what would really be unfair is if McCain ends winning just because he is white and Obama is black.

Well after reading all of the story on Sarah and all of the responses that followed, all I can say is WOW! She's the one. They call Obama the one, but it isn't true, she's the one. A real pistol packing momma from the big north country. I was amazed to see all of those dead animals on the family walls. I think that I need to get busy and fix up my place.

People say that Sarah is just misunderstood and that if we give her some time, say 4 or 8 years, that we'll all come to love her as much as the people at Fox and the RNC, oh and let's not forget John McCain, after all he picked her.

With her vast knowledge of the Supreme Court, all of the magazines and books that she says she reads, her iron grip on foreign policy, especially Russia. I'm sure that Mr Putin is shaking in his boots about her being in charge of anything, and let's not forget that she and only she is the most knowledge person in american on energy, maybe even in the world. John really knows how to pick em' I mean the first major move as the Republican nominee and he picks her, Sarah Palin.

And don't forget the most important item in a long list of items, that she's the most experienced person in American to be just one 72 year old heartbeat away from the most powerful job in the world. And we now know that she and John have a vision for American, and what a vision it is, where their right on every level and we're not and any level. And if we just follow their lead and never question any of their ideas or positions that we'll all live in a world that is as wonderful as their minds,

After all, they are legends in their own minds. It seems that they both have plans to fix American and if we elect them on Nov 4th then and only then will they tell us what those plans are, now that's putting country first, and the blame needs to go on all those other people that don't see that John has the vision to fix American and the rest of just can't see it. But I'm sure that he has a plan to fix those kind of people too!

Again all I can say is WOW, four more years of the same wonderful bliss that we've had for the last eight years, what more could a country ask for but that. We are truly blessed beyond words, I'm sure that we can get an amen from Rev. Muthie, when he stops hunting for witches that is.

I started reading this long list of hypocritical and insanely partisan smears looking for facts - any facts - that would indicate that Sarah is less qualified to be president than Barak. I stopped reading after the first 50 or so, because there were zero facts explicating this ostensible distinction.

The truth of the matter is that no president in history could be judged qualified if any significant knowledge of all of the subject matter that will cross his desk were a qualification for the job.

The job of president is that of an executive, which means that all presidents learn on the job and that any with any sense must rely on the information, opinions, and explanations of experts in many fields. Except for Obama's pissing away $110,000,000 into the Chicago political sewer through ACORN, Sarah has substantially more exectuive experience than he. Of course, that fact is lost on mindless ideologues.

To pretend that any candidate is prepared to be president is duplicitous. For Obama supporters to pretend otherwise is both hypocritical and duplicitous. For the WP to support these mindless Democrat drones spewing the party talking points is as indicitive of its bias as Gwen Ifill's publicly demonstrated bias while failing to recuse herself from moderating the v.p. "debate".

If it weren't so serious, the spewage of this gaggle of drones could simply be dismissed as the sewage it is. Too bad, so sad.

Clinton should never have forced all these banks to give loans to people who couldn't pay for them in the first place, now we have to bail out more ultra rich bankers!

lets just start a third party and get rid of one of these two. anyone remember the whigs? democratic-republicans?

I personally think the dems got to go. not one qualified candidate since truman.

Why is a question gotcha if one cannot recall a single newspaper they read?
Why every question becomes a gotcha question when it stumps her?
Just translate it into plain English, she does not have the answers. Pretending to know things and read newspapers she does not read is not going to help. Lying outright to win an election is not the best way to create trust with voters.

Posted by: cmn | October 2, 2008 12:13 PM | Report abuse

Quick question to all the conservatives here who are so proud of Sarah. Do you really want elect someone to be VP just because they are just like you? Do you think you could run this country well? Just because she seems nice and like an everyman doesn't mean she is right for the job.

Here is an analogy I heard the other day.

A child (let's say your child) is extremely sick and has recently fallen into a seemingly terrible state of health.

There is an Ivy League educated doctor, who has spent several years at the finest schools working with other intellectually curious individuals.

Then there is a doctor that is a nice guy. He or she is just like you. They spent some time at a medical school, but they bounced around a lot, not sure of what they wanted to do. They don't really study that much because they lack intellectual curiosity, but hey, they seem like some one you could have a beer and a laugh with.

Who do you want to be taking care of your child?

Ultimately what I'm trying to get at is this. Just because the person seems likeable and ordinary doesn't mean they should be in office. As a matter of fact, the people in charge of this country should be extra-ordinary.

What is the one group with a lower approval rating than Bush? Congress, 100% of our Presidential canidates, and 50% of our VP Canidates come from that group. None of the Senate canidates have shown any "TRUE" leadership in the Senate.

That is why we have such a fasination with Palin - she is something different. I think it points to a deeper desire with in America for canidates that do not have among their qualifications for President: Member of Congress, Lawyer, Big State Governor, etc.

That's why Palin is so exciting to a large number of people - she is not what we have been getting. I think the Republicans are making a mistake by holding her back and keeping her removed from the Media. If they felt she was a strong enough choice for VP they should let her loose and take their chances.

I also beleive that we are becoming TOO focused on the Office of President and not enough on Congress. A strong, independant, accountable congress would have been able to act as a check to Bush and moderate some of his extreme actions. Someone suggested voting out all of the incumbants in Congress and starting fresh - that is not a bad idea.

Anyone can be President, all you need to be is born here and of a certain age. That is the only qualification that matters in a government by the people and for the people.

Chris-

I know you're the oh so typical liberal "genius" but maybe you can explain why the Iraq Liberation Act (which specifically called for the removal of Saddam and the establishment of a democratic form of government) was signed by HillBilly Clinton in - yes believe it or not moron 1998. Was he in on the "oil scam" too?

Go ahead and enlighten us.

And when you finish with that one maybe you can explain why Clinton, Dodd and, your boy Obama took a total of $390,000 in campaign "contributions" from the Freddie/Fannie fan club at the exact same time they were voting against S. 190 which would have brought oversight to any organization (including Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae) involved in secondary subprime lending.

Go ahead idiot - explain it for the masses!!!

We await you feeble, mindless, banal, drivel.

What can I say, the a*holes that write the garbage about her are the village idiots that will be crying foul when the empty suit gets elected. You pseudo-intellectuals deserve what you will get. Palin is being maligned because she is a Republican. That is fact. All of the other garbage is from the useless know-it-alls that will bring this country to it's knee's, which I'm sure would be quite alright with them. They really think that this freedom of expression is a god-given right, not one fought for by men and women whose shoes they couldn't shine. Lemmings! Hey Repubs, get ready to see your chances for the White House officially end tonight. Palin will be exposed and the McCain camp will look foolish for picking such an unqualified imbecile. The bump was nice while it lasted, huh? Get ready for your gulp of reality that Obama will be your next president and no amount of fear-mongering and voting fraud will stop it this time.

I have no doubt that Sarah Palin is intelligent, but how can you explain that she can not even give an answer to the names of the papers she read. That is a simple question that could of been answered with about three or four words. I think her problem is that she is familiar with the laws of Alaska and anything outside of that is unknown. I am Republican and I will not vote this year because I cannot see myself voting for the McCain/Palin ticket, she is pathetic.
I donot know how anyone in there right mind can say she would be a good Vice President or President. It is beyond me. It is scary!

The comments of people deriding Palin only show their own arrogance and ignorance of our history. Two of our greatest presidents had similar humble backgrounds, George Washington was a farmer, and Abraham Lincoln was raised by uneducated farmers in a one room log cabin. Yet both men led our nation through its two greatest crises

Never wanting to kick someone while they're down ... I will do anyway.

If you watched Palin's interviews at all, you would see a person who is flailing away to put out some answers and trying to look like she grasps the issues when in reality she is just buying time and trying to get out of each interview alive. This has to be tough for her and I can't imagine she feels good about her performances. It was especially intriguing to watch her second interview with Katie Couric where John McCain had to accompany her. McCain tried to pass off her slip on attacking Al Qaida in Pakistan as "gotcha journalism". I'm not sure I know what gotcha journalism is. What I do know is that she was asked a question by a voter and basically gave an answer that was identical to Barack Obama's position and contradictory to her running mate. Maybe that is a gotcha. Where I come from that is called a boneheaded mistake. Perhaps Palin would be more comfortable as Obama's running mate since she already agrees with him on some issues?

Posted by: Graham | October 2, 2008 12:07 PM | Report abuse

The thing that frustrates me most. We consistently hear.

"Palin is a very smart, charismatic and accomplished woman." It has been said so much, that it is actually now fact.

But is it? Do any of the people who say this actually know her?

However, from the people who have worked with her they seem to imply that she was "at the right spot at the right time", manipulative, partisan, filled with hate and focused on revenge.

Add to that, based on the FACTS that have come front and center from the interviews, totally uninformed and unqualified.

Posted by: Gus | October 2, 2008 12:07 PM | Report abuse

There's no way I can vote for McCain at this point or his running mate. This is a crucial time for the country and we can't afford to have a president who likes to gamble with other peoples lives, jobs, and finances.

I'm also amazed how my fellow citizens on both sides repeat the one liners and sound bites almost verbatim from the candidates.

I beg all of you to stop bickering and take some time to delve in and read the policy papers, voting records and other documentation on all four candidates from multiple sources. I'm so tired of hearing and reading all these sound bites that seem lifted right from each candidates own ads and websites.

If you really take time to read and understand each candidate you may find like this republican that there's no way you can vote for McCain.

Oh and by the way, these folks that try to dilute the facts by saying Obama is this religion or that is very un-American. This country was founded on freedom of religion and to use a religion against a man as a way to deride him (he's a Christian) is so very un-American and repugnant.

In another time and another place they threw Christians to the lions and in another time and in many times and places they tried to exterminate the Hebrew people. In those times I am sure if you wanted to degrade someone you could call them the religion that was being mistreated but that doesn't make it true and it doesn't make it right.

Experience does not equal good leader.

-> Sarah Palin = some experience, little common sense, almost no world perception

-> John McCain = lots of experience, almost no common sense, distorted world perception

-> Joe Biden = lots of experience, little common sense, good world perception

-> Barack Obama = some experience, good common sense, good world perception

Obviously, experience is not the only thing that matters, and the people who keep bringing it up are only using this issue to make a point that belittles my intelligence. Please, find another bullet point for your argument, because you are losing voters on this one.

And even better, I think having someone who can spot a poor deal and has the kahoonas to say "this is garbage" would make one of the best presidents we've ever had - especially over someone superbly schooled in how to lie on TV.

I'd like to start by saying that the current trend of vicious attacks on the personal poltical beliefs of others is extremely troubling and a sign of the danger our country is in. We are far too polarized for our own good. We have come to regard views on politics not identical to our own as attacks on our own sense of reason and intelligence. Enough's enough people.

As for my own opinion, I just finished reading the excellent biography of John Adams (our nation's second president and a founding father) by David McCullough. Its frightening to me to look back and realize the great principles and achievements our government and nation were founded on were realized by some of the most ingenious and EDUCATED men (and women) in history. These people who began the expirement in democracy that is America used to translate their own copies of Cicero for crying our loud. Now look at us...we define 'experience' as how many years of foreign policy dealings one has. Please. How many years of that did Reagan have? Or Kennedy?

My point is this-experience should not just be considered as a definitive amount of time spent in government. It should take into account serious education, study and civil service. In this sense, the Obama-Biden ticket is far more experienced in my opinion than the McCain-Palin tandem. If the only experience we consider viable is how many years a candidate spent on the senate floor, then why do allow someone younger than the age of 70 to even be considered for the white house?

To Bud0, I believe there's a lot of truth in your post. It seems she can't even educate herself on issues that she knows she'll be asked about in the few interviews she's done.

Her qualifications consist of that she can identify with "Joe Six Pack"; if that were the only qualification needed to be VP, McCain must have had a hard time choosing a running mate.

To dcp, Palin has spent her entire career in Alaska. She grew up in Alaska, was mayor of a small Alaskan town, and became Governor of Alaska. She didn't even have a reason to get a passport until earlier this year. Obama spent his childhood in Indonesia and Hawaii, but he has spent his adult life educating himself on issues both national and global.

I think the most important thing brought about by the Palin controversy is that it shows very poor judgement on McCain's part. He had many options for a VP choice, but decided to choose Palin in order to snag a few Hillary supporters. She just doesn't have the knowledge, mindset, or prowess needed to act on the national, let alone global, level.

Palin and McCain are the wrong people for the country right now.

They are both so hopelessly out of touch.

Their campaign has been mean-spirited and trivial.

Every time the McCain-Palin campaign is faced with a challenge, they respond with a lie about their own records, they attack Obama, or they throw a radical and dramatic hissyfit in order to change the rules in the middle of the game.

Last week, McCain tried to cancel his debate because of the economy. This week, they are trying to disrupt the debate by accusing the moderator (who they chose!) of discrimination... before the debate even took place (which, is itself discrimination... to accuse someone of wrongdoing because of their beliefs or race).

But a U.S. President cannot cry foul when he doesn't like the cards that are being dealt. In most cases, the President is the leader of the free world... so there is nobody to cry to. You just play the cards in you've been dealt... and you play them smart.

McCain is a dice player, whose future is determined by chance. Obama seems more like a poker player, whose future is determined by a combination of chance, character, and calculation.

Needless to say, I'll take Obama.

In response to Dave From Minnesota, who wrote:

-- "Was Obama ever asked about his experience or his background? "

-Yes. Obama ran for state office in Illinois, then the U.S. Senate, he's been on campaigning for president for two years and ran an intense primary campaign against a strong and established candidate, Hillary Clinton. During the course of that, his experience and background has been throughly examined.-

Running for President, doesn't qualify you for President.

Obama has had little political leadership experience and is now running for President. Was he mayor of a city, governer of a state or even leader of the house in his state government? Did he even lead his local scout troop? NO.

Just what qualifies him? He's actually running for President, not VP and Palin is far more qualified than he is. McCain's qualifications are more than Biden and Obama, put together.

At least Clinton has credentials. It seems Obama's credentials are that he's part black and has no political background to use against him.

Thank You DCP - two great points there!

It is amazing the attacks I am witnessing against McCain and Palin and how far biased folks will go to forgive Obama and Biden for far more blunders than those made by either McCain or Palin.

Obama learned one thing in the Senate - I call it Politi-Speak, he is a talker and not a doer... Biden had both voted FOR
Alaska's "Bridge to nowhere" and Owes a huge more favors both political and corporate than Obama owes Ted Turner for his influence over the obvious media bias, which is filtering down to the people that are oblivious to the manipulation.

My vote is for the Governor with the MOST
FAVORABLE RATING in the USA for 2008 and Hillary 2012!

Do yourselves a favor and WATCH the debate and let that influence you - not the media's biased slant towards Obama, to make your voting decision... Then you can have a clear conscious and make a real difference for the US over the next twelve years...

Sarah Palin is the Rosie Ruiz of 2008. For those who may not remember Rosie Ruiz, she "won" the Boston Marathon of 1980 by "finishing" first. It turns out that she did not actually run the entire race, but cut in front after taking some transportation to the finish line. In competitive events, like politics, we usually like our competitors to run the whole race.....Perhaps Sarah Palin would like to take the Bridge to Nowhere to the finish line.

It is interesting to hear all the comments on Palin's lack of understanding on foreign policies as "Pakistan"yet the writer seems to expond that she is fully qualified to judge that with her extensive foriegn policy background. I can't understand how Democrats try to make little of Palin while they have Nancy Polusi running her mouth. Let's forget about Dems and Reps because there is way too much party politics going on today. Let's make all offices, both state local and federal 6 year terms and you may only hold office once, period. Congress is trying to limit the golden parachutes from wall street, but they feel one term min of 2 years qualifies them for life long retirement benefits? It took both parties voting for these things to happen. The Dems have had control of congress for the last 2 years, have things gotten better?worse? It is time to call a spade a shovel.

It scares me that Palin thinks "joe 6-pack" should finally have a place in our government. The connotation by itself reeks of "redneck, unintellectual, lower blue-collar" types, which by themselves can be wonderful individuals, BUT...this type of individual is NOT who I want leading my country! I want the very best of the best (unfortunately, always a debatable point in an election year) for my leaders..educated..refined...thinkers. Gads, not Joe-6-pack! Sorry Joe.

Ridiculous to hear all you pathetic left-wing nutjobs talk about Palin as if she's some idiot, all the while you sing the praises of a man who's major "experience" is being a community organizer...yippee. What major decisions has Obama ever had to make in his life? Why do you somehow act as if Palin is so incapable of running the White House, if something should happen to McCain, yet think the radical, most liberal senator in Congress, is the perfect choice to run the country. Do you actually realize how close we are to complete catastrophic failure if Obama gets elected and gets his wishes? You goofballs obviously didn't take Economics 101 and think somehow, this moron is going to straighten things out by raising the capital gains tax (will completely create more offshore investing), raising taxes on the highest tax payers (who ultimately create the jobs and pay the most portion of the IRS revenues), and trying to socialize our healthcare system, which has failed in every socialized system put in place. It's funny to me how people in the country quickly forget (or fail to overlook) that the highest growth in jobs and the lowest unemployment rates between that idiot Bill Clinton and our current president go to the very latter and not you're poster child for greatness (wow, what ignorance). The highest amount of revenues taken in by the IRS came from the tax CUTS of this administration. It happened with Reagan too. Research it. Look at the facts. Yes, we do need change, but not SOCIALISM as change. I don't agree with Bush on a lot of issues, but he is a far cry better than what most of the uninformed people on the left side seem to think. Funny, how the double-standard of the democrats works: black man who's a democrat: ok, black man who's a conservative: sellout or clone, etc.. RIDICULOUS. The democrats have been promising to save the minorities all of these years and save public education and save social security and all the entitlements and LOOK.....they're in worse shape than ever. Failing schools, more and more people on welfare, an influx of irresponsibility, and yet you fools will keep voting them in. Democrat-controlled Congress for the past two years and what have they accomplished? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Don't take my word for it...look at the facts. Oh, take a look at there approval rating too why you're at it: it's around 8%. 8% is low, in case you didn't know.

How could she possibly be a drag on the ticket-?

Oh, just maybe every time she farts it stays in the press for a week.

I am surprised you don't have some scum bag search her trash for tampons in an attempt to claim she has PMS.

On the other hand - there is not one mention of Rezko talking to prosecutors about his involvement in influence peddling which has every chance in the world to drag Obama into it. No; we wouldn't want to mention a possibility of a corrupt politician from an area known for corrupt politicians for the last hundred years being bought and paid for with organized crime money - especially if his name is Obamoron.

Kind of smacks how there was not a word in the press about John Edwards affair behind his dying wife’s back until late in the primary process after he was otherwise eliminated and the news had been known for months by the media.

And Palin is a drag for what? The real reason is she has more experience than your stinking Presidential candidate you shill and you have to attack her for your boy so he gets all those female votes and you know it. That's why she has been berated.

And of course those pillars of womens rights, NOW, say nothing exactly as they did when slick willie was shoving his slick willie down a 20 years throat in the oval office.

NOW - that's "change" we can believe in.

Is it just me or is no one holding Gov. Palin to the same standards as any other VP nominee in history? Titles to every pre VP debate article start with "Expectations low for Palin". Really, my expectations are extremely high! As a government official who is running for VP (or any office) and trying to win my vote and the votes of so many Americans, I should expect brilliance, and if I don't get it then she failed miserably. Not mediocre, not "held her own", but destroyed the competition on the issues that were relevant and thought provoking. Joe Biden is sometimes seen as a cut throat that may come across as "condescending" or a "know it all", I say shame on the American people for wanting anything else...or putting up with anything less.

Honestly, BB?
George Washington led our country after having led a group of colonists and a few French troops and defeating the most powerful army on the globe. Then detested the very idea of becoming president, and hated every minute of it, but did it because it was his duty.
Abraham Lincoln read every book he could get his hands on. Travelled up and down the Mississippi river to explore the country and learn as much as possible. Became a powerful lawyer because of his immense desire to study the law and learn as much about politics and philosophy as possible. He served in the military, and defended an innocent "enemy." Served in the Illinois senate multiple times, and the US senate once(sound familiar yet?) Dreamed of travelling overseas.
Sarah Palin is neither of those people.

LOVELY SARAH, VP RUNNING MATE

WilliamBanzai7

Lovely Sarah VP running mate
Lovely Sarah, VP running mate

Lovely Sarah, McCain's Veep running mate,
Nothing can come between them.
When it gets dark just throw your smarts away.

Standing by a gallop meter,
When I caught a glimpse of Sarah,
Filling in an entry in her political phrase book.
In a Veep cap she looked much older,
And the gun across her shoulder
Made her look a little like a military gal.

Lovely Sarah VP running mate,
May I inquire discreetly,
When are you free to come debate with me?
(Sarah!)

Let her out and they tried to skin her.
Had a laugh and over dinner,
Told her we would really like to hear the issues again.
Got the bill and McCain paid it.
Interviewed her home and nearly nailed it,
Sitting on the sofa with a five kids and a moose.

Oh, lovely Sarah VP running mate,
The media's out to get you!
Give them a wink and make them think of you.

Sarah Palin on the Bailout:

"That's why I say, I, like every American I'm speaking with, we're ill about this position that we have been put in, where it is the taxpayers looking to bailout. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the healthcare reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the--oh, it's got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So, healthcare reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans. And trade, we have--we've got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive, scary thing, but one in five jobs being created in the trade sector today. We've got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that."

If you can vote for this woman who cannot even complete a sentence that hasn't been written out in advance, there is nothing that can be said other than you must hate america.

So now that that's out of the way, let's go to the "least qualified source of information in America," that being bloggers. Oh yeah, Journalism is dead so that puts columns and posts with responses like these below main street. In fact I am going to coin-phrase the term "gutter-level opinion biased pieces" (still not qualified in journalism which as we know, doesn't exist. I just figured since all the "loons" talk about her qualifications, we will put it in perspective that no one that writes these blogs, columns,or responds to them "is qualified" to make such statements. You know what they say, "opinions are like a^#holes and everyone's got one." LOL .... I for one was raised in Los Angeles. The smallest metro I lived in had 5 million people. That does not put her or anyone "out of step." Oh sure, we have better sewers, homeless people, and crime but, nothing special about the "big city" and certainly I have found more idiots in San Francisco (talk about the 9th Court and I will throw up in my mouth) than anywhere else. You see, I have lived with North Central California bias versus Southern California bias for some time. Sorry, mommy and daddy's $100K education doesn't make you smarter. It just gives you a platform to spew your propaganda and hatred wrapped in your nice shiny "change" banner. Kind of like a s**T sandwich on whole wheat. Palin wins either way. And one way or another, America will loose. Congress is horrible and only going to be even more so when more Dems are in power and the balance is gone from Washington. 94 Dems did not vote in the House for the bill they could have done without the Replubicans. I guess they needed to protect the 16 seats up for relection, 12 of Barney Franks stooges (Fannie/Freddie nightmare) and those that can say, "see, the presidents plan didn't work and I didn't support it). Playin' politics with the people. I can't wait to write a post election book about the truth and lies in the Democratic party. A heart beat away, She would make an outstandingly great president. She says it like it is ………. Iran watch your step. Listen to what Sarah Palin has to say and vote the McCain/ Palin ticket!

“The current war in Iraq as a messianic affair in which the United States could act out the will of the Lord.
our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God," "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

What you see in Iraq, basically, is a manifestation of what's going on in this unseen world called the spirit world. ... We need to think like Jesus thinks. We are in a time and a season of war, and we need to think like that. We need to develop that instinct. We need to develop as believers the instinct that we are at war, and that war is contending for your faith. ... Jesus called us to die. You're worried about getting hurt? He's called us to die. Listen, you know we can't even follow him unless you are willing to give up your life. ... I believe that Jesus himself operated from that position of war mode. Everyone say "war mode." Sarah Palin on foreign policy – Believe and VOTE McCain/ Palin.

The mud slinging between the liberals and the conservatives is a joke. Each believes they are 100% right and the other is an idiot.

Most comments I read shows how uninformed so many voters are by the ridiculous remarks and put downs. Does anyone take the time to research each of these candidates and see what they actually stand for?

I'm not saying who I intend to vote for but you can bet I've collected as much information as possible on each person and I will feel confident that my vote is for the right candidates.

I'm not adding any fuel for you uninformed people to throw more stupid comments out about your one-sided idiosyncrasies. If you intend to vote, then grow up first and act like you have some respect for this country.

Let's stick to the FACT rather than playing the spin game by asking "what would Cliton or Reagan say if they were asked about blah blah blah". The FACT is she was asked a few questions and she didn't come up with answers that can convince people she has the knowledge or credential to be the VP. PERIOD.

I went to high school with Sarah Palin, and let me tell you she's know genius. She was always the person who would do anything for attention. She would often create drama to attrack attention to herself. I hope for the sake of our country that she is not made the Vice President. My husband summed it up best..."Sarah from Wasilla? She's a dummy"

We're still confused as to how she was elected governor. Do people even care who they vote for?

Sad, bitter people got so scared about Palin, they now attack her for what should be admirable qualities. Self reliance becomes selfish, Down to earth becomes common, strong becomes arrogant and knowledgeable in Alaska becomes out of touch everywhere else.

A sad an pathetic world we live in where politics is attacking the other guy, not defending political opinion.

I guess that has something to do with the Democratic campaign, where political opinion is vague, blows with the wind, full of sound bites (that appear to be plagiarized from John Lennon songs) and generally lacks any substance.

Early on I understood that she lacked the experience to take on the job of President of the United States if McCain should die in office. But what I like about her (as a democrat) has nothing to do with underqualifications. She will got back to Alaska having learned about the press, the public, and that she was presented to the world and the world looked back at her. She is doing a good job in Alaska, she's just got into the big game. Give her time. You may be surprised when she's 55 and she breaks out of the frozen north, saavy and ready.

Very true what you said. Both these Presidents had very humble background but they had IMMENSE depth in their knowledge and world affairs. Sarah Palin has NONE.

And oh, Obama, IS ALSO from a VERY humble background and though he may not have the experience HE STILL IS VERY INTELLIGENT. He has GRADUATED from Harward College, for crying out loud!

I will vote for Obama because he is thinking in the RIGHT direction of progress.

The main job of VP is to provide rapid replacement of the President if he is incapacitated. It is apparent to all that Palin is not qualified for that.

That makes McCains choice irresponsible.

I was undecided about the candidates, not that happy with either McCain or Obama. But Obama's choice of Biden who is qualified to be VP and is a congruent choice contrasted against McCain's tactical and cynical choice of Palin "decided" me real f*in quick.

Palin is being irresponsible also.

She should have declined, but is so utterly unreflective and apparently clueless about her own limitations she can only be described as a fool -no matter what her native intelligence and no matter what her intentions are. She is a narcissist.

I keep seeing a rationalization from the McCain camp about why Palin is qualified: She understands the average person.

Excuse me??? I reject that is the case on it's face. More important than that is the primary qualification of a potential President is to understand the world and this nation. An undergraduate knowledge (at the least) of geography would help also. The fastest and shortest way to get to the USA from Moscow is a polar route, one of the thousands of things Palin seems oblivious about.

It amuses me to watch McCain spokes people and media commentators discuss what Palin has to do to in this debate to make it appear that she has understandings that she clearly does not. The whole pre-debate discussion has been about what ploys Palin needs to use to fool people into thinking she is qualified.

Putting America above personal political ambition-??? On that count McCain and Palin both have failed miserably.

Anyone considering voting Republican with Sarah Palin, i.e., the little token, on the ticket...consider youself really really stupid. Only someone REALLY stupid could even consider this token in a skirt....she has CONTINUALLY embarrassed her party and women in general....sexist pigs like to claim she is "a victim" and "being picked on and attacked".....yeah sure, her OWN WORDS have put her out there as the biggest joke since Ross Perot's running mate. So, go ahead....vote for Palin (she's the ticket after all, McSame isn't the one really running)....and in about a year you will be hiding who you voted for, even more embarrassed than GW voters are now after she asks a foreign diplomat where he got the towel on his head because she "has some in her bathroom just like that". save the planet, vote Palin back to Alaska.

I would like for the issues to be discussed tonight, more than is Senator Biden being condescending or sexist, or is Govenor Palin more fluff than substance.
I would like to let both candidates speak clearly and openly about their concerns on foreign policy, the economy and the environment. One of these two will be a 'heart-beat away' from holding the most responsibility in the free world.
If a candidate cannot answer questions with specific, concise points in a debate why would we think that they would be capable of giving good advice and or taking responsibility if required.
I would like to hear both candidates response to this: "Is it a form of sexism to ask Govenor Palin the same questions as are asked of EVERY candidate in the primaries? And if so why or why not? Finally, Govenor Palin why do you not answer questions from the media? If you believe that the media is 'out to get you' then why not steer the direction of the conversation and convince the American public that you do have a good grasp on many, many issues and topics?"
To bad that willnever recieve the light of day.

I can't believe that anyone could possibly compare Bill Clinton when he was first elected with Sarah Palin, aside from the fact that they both were governors. Even if you dislike him, it's obvious that Clinton lives and breathes public policy and probably could've answered those questions from grade school on, based on his own interest in the issues and drive to learn more about them.
Aside from that, people on both sides are sure saying unsubstantiated, emotional and very mean things!

In response to Ray, who wrote,

"Was Obama ever asked about his experience or his background? "

Yes. Obama ran for state office in Illinois, then the U.S. Senate, he's been on campaigning for president for two years and ran an intense primary campaign against a strong and established candidate, Hillary Clinton. During the course of that, his experience and background has been throughly examined.

It hasn't made news, but I suspect he's been asked what he reads, what he thinks about the Supreme Court, whether he wears boxers or briefs -- All those substantial and non-substantial questions candidates for high office get asked along the campaign trail.

Palin is being asked those questions and her answers have been frighteningly empty. She's not being asked about substanitive questions about, for example, Supreme Court rulings because -- by her own admission -- she doesn't know of any other than Roe v. Wade. She's not being asked about critical foreign policy issues because she says her experience is based on watching planes fly over Alaska. She's not asked about tough policy issues in the news because -- again by her own words -- she doesn't read newspapers or news magazines.

If she's being treated any differently it's because what we've heard so far is so much less than anybody expects of a candidate for the White House. We're trying to find how low we can go on the qualifications scale.

The current crisis shows that nobody in congress should run for the top positions. Everybody in congress is responsible for the mess we are in and that also means Obama, Biden and McCain. That leaves one person, Palin, who is best out of the four to run for the top positions.

If Obama had selected this disaster of a VP and considered dropping them at this point, Republicans would jump all over it saying "See, he makes extremely bad decisions, typical inexperienced Democratic candidate, another reason not to elect him!" But when McCain (The Maverick) does it, you somehow create some justification, because he's Republican. You can't have it both ways. Last thing, if you were hiring these candidates to work for your company, Palin's education portion of her resume would be chuckled at, then placed in the circular file.

This is exactly the point, John McCain in his minute wisdom invited Palin onto his ticket. Meanwhile Obama who you imply came from no where, was nominated through a rigorous process of the democratic primary against a tough Clinton machine who was almost a foregone conclusion. I don't believe the hype of the media being against Palin, I believe she has made misstep after misstep and the handling of her has been sub-par. They should have trotted her through the republican propaganda machine then gone to the news anchors for interviews. Your complaining about Palin getting an unfair ride is exaggerated. We've had a few years to vette Obama, McCain & Biden. Only a few moments to do so with Palin and I don't believe she is fairing well for McCains decision.

She has yet to demonstrate she has even a clue - she can't name any Supreme Court decisions aside from Roe v. She's not qualified. Period. She may be good at whatever she does in Alaska, but on the national level, she's a disaster.

I can't wait for the debate. All Biden has to do is stand there and smile, because as soon as she opens her mouth, she's going to bury herself and the Republican ticket.

A grave mistake was already committed by electing someone like George Bush, alas! for two terms. The results are for all of us to see.

Don't do another mistake by making this a big election on small things

Even if you don't like either of the candidte, need of the hour is to choose a lesser evil.

Sarah Palin did not have a baby last March. Her daughter Bristol Palin did.

Sarah Palin did not spike the "Bridge to Nowhere" until it became obvious that the bill wouldn't survive – and then kept over $200 million of federal money.

Sarah Palin is an undereducated, misogynistic female in an underpopulated state (not that I think Alaska should have more people) which has fewer people than any of the seventeen largest American cities.

She wants to tout herself as being for reform and change, and against business as usual; well, let's look at the figures. During her six-year term as mayor of Wasilla (whoo-hoo!), the town's indebtedness soared from about $1.4 million to almost $24 million.

Sarah Palin posed with a caribou she had evidently just shot. I wonder how she'd feel if the situation were reversed. Blood was running out of its mouth...real sporting, there, Sarah, with your high-powered rifle and no doubt the latest telescopic sight.

Sarah Palin fired the Alaska Commissioner of Public Safety, Walt Monegan, because he wouldn't fire the trooper who was going through a messy divorce with Palin's sister. Accusations against Michael Wooten notwithstanding, she abused her power as governor. Of course, these charges (stemming from incidents well in the past) weren't brought until last summer. Interesting timing, isn't it? It's kind of like all the bimboes who waited until Schwarzenegger ran for governor in CA to say, "Ooh, that big meanie touched me there and there and there...!"

Sarah Palin is a hypocritical, ambitious political animal. Of course, that's just my opinion...

McSame did not choose Palin, he wanted Lieberman, the Dem convert who worked with him on creating the 9/11 commission. The GOP wanted Palin and McSame, the 'maverick', folded to their wishes. SHE, and the political folly that followed her, are the result of McSame's spineless acquiescence to his party. As for her qualifications I'm not privy, but her views...
- She's a creationist who wants to blend public education with religion
- She's in support of abstinence only education, which is proven to be ineffective
- She believes human activity has little or nothing to do with global climate change
- She has already blatantly lied to us, "I told the Congress 'thanks but no thanks'..."
Enough flag waving folks, think critically.

Talk about cherry picking. In addition to Hawaii and Indonesia you should include Los Angeles (2 yrs - Occidental College) New York (4 yrs - Columbia University) and Illinois to date.

Palin hasn't spent her whole life in Alaska, she was born in Idaho and moved to Alaska as an infant. She left Alaska for 1 semester in Hawaii and 2-3 years in Idaho finishing her college education before returning to Alaska.

Seems to me that Obama has a bit more experience with a wider spread of Americans than Palin, plus some international stuff thrown in. This is bad?

I have to admit that it is scary to see such an unqualified person like Obama be chosen for the 1st highest rank in the US gov. What are Liberal thinking!

I'm wondering what Bill Clinton's response would have been in 1991 if he had been asked about famous Supreme Court rulings besides Roe vs. Wade, or the Reagan Doctrine?

If he had been able to answer either in any detail, it most likely would have meant he had been prepped well. As Governer of Arkansas, neither of those questions would have come up very often, if at all.

Biden and Obama are lawyers. If you think the Constitution should be changed to only allow lawyers to run for President, then I guess I can see the criticism of Palin not being able to think of one in that situation.

But, isn't it more important to know how she views these cases, rather than how well she's memorized them? I've heard a lot about how Palin governed Alaska as a practical centrist, not imposing any sort of extreme conservative agenda, let alone anything close to a theocracy, as some libs seem to be implying.

JohnC, there you neocons go again. Ifill's book is not a gush job for Obama. It's an analysis of an interesting and unique phenomenon in which he clearly plays a leading role. If you had any experience listening to her reporting, you would know better. You could hardly do better if what you want is intelligent fairness. But, oh dear, she also happens to be black. That's really your problem, isn't it?

Posted by: Anonymous | October 2, 2008 11:28 AM | Report abuse

I think Palin is a fine candidate for her state, on a national stage not so much. People tend to forget that we are voting for the Executive Leadership of our Nation. Just because you "like" someone as a person does not necessarily merit that they should be in control of your life (which is essentially what this is).

Push the issues, ask more questions about what policies she plans to support, and ask why she thinks the way she does. This is the most important VP debate in American History, and we need to analyze the candidates and who they stand up for.

My lot is with Obama and Bidden.

Posted by: Holman | October 2, 2008 11:28 AM | Report abuse

Obama qualified for President? No way! Sarah Palin is more qualified to be President that Obama who is utterly clueless on economic affairs, international affairs and business. Sadly, Obama represents Hollywood's immoral values and he would be a disaster should he be elected President. Unfortunately the uneducated and less-than-intelligent masses will vote for him because all they see or hear in the news is pro-Obama, anti-McCain trash.

OK, Obama is not a communist or a muslim (Although his ideals would tell differently). The fact is that he has less experience in public office than Palin, who "wasn't even elected". The dems would have been lucky to get someone as qualified as president. But instead they got an empty suit, lousy junior senator with views left of Barbara Boxer!! If you think the economy is bad now, just wait until we're taxed into a depression from extreme public spending!

McCain's pig-in-a-poke sales job, re: Sarah Palin, just isn't working. We caught a glimpse or two of the "pig" and we shall get another peek tonight. Other than the lipstick and outsized ego, Palin does not at all resemble the lovable Miss Piggy; Palin is Cruella De Vil, minus the smarts.

McCain foolishly bought this pig-in-a-poke, thinking that he could resell the porker to a gullible electorate. As it turns out, most voters, other than the GOP theocrats, are too savvy to fall for this grand deecption.

you folks are missing the purpose of Palin's candidacy.

She is appealing ONLY to Hunter Joe Six Pack and to the WHITE FUNDAMENTALISTS who are rabidly anti-civil rights for women.

If she picks up a 2% bounce in Virginia and NC and Ohio for the ticket, she did her job.

She is not on the ticket because she would actually serve well as President. She is on the ticket to get some women to vote for the ticket and to get some hunters to vote for the ticket.

Once the election is over, if the Dems win, she will lose Bush lawyers and will lose the trial that awaits her for abuse of power and the trial that awaits her for ordering her staff to use Yahoo to avoid Freedom of Information requests.

What a mess of hogwash. Her lack of experience, but sharp learning curve are a plus. Her lack of knowledge about the Washington elite may make it easier for her to stay an outsider. Her immediate need is a crash course, but in an administration that happens very quickly except to people like Jimmy Carter which every Democvrat seems to still admire.

It's obvious that the reader of the Palin article will want the article to point in the direction they believe. If the reader is anti-Palin, the article was a complete failure becuase it did not attack and expose every fault. If the reader is pro-Palin, the article did not show all of her strong attributes that they believe she has.

Whatever happened to factual reporting and allowing the reader to learn rather than opinionated columns that are meant to bring readers into the same mindset as the author?

If the best defense of Palin, someone running for the second-highest elected office in the most powerful nation in the world, is: "nobody can find anything positive to say about her qualifications," then how does not saying anything positive about her qualifications constitute bias?

When you support the unsupportable, don’t expect to have an easy time with those tasked with delivering facts. Golly, doesn’t that sound like the last few years here in America?

Posted by: mobedda | October 2, 2008 10:51 AM | Report abuse

The thing about Palin is that - like George Bush - she's not actually stupid, but is probably slightly above average intelligence (though way below the average Presidential candidate's intelligence).

Like Bush, her problem is ignorance and incuriosity. She could have learned the things she's been revealed as not knowing, but she never bothered. She's never even bothered to marshall the mental discipline necessary to construct proper sentences.

Why not? Because she can't bring herself to care about these issues. The only issue in her world is Sarah Palin, and how wonderful and popular she is. This whole thing is another beauty contest to her. Foreign countries, the economy, and probably even her "family values" politics, are just props on the stage during the swimsuit competition.

I'll bet she doesn't even believe all that creationism and witchcraft stuff. She just does whatever's necessary to fit in and be popular, she always has.

The best proof is the Couric Supreme Court question. Just a few months ago, Palin was holding press conference condemning the Supreme Court and expressing her heartfelt sympathy for her fellow Alaskans who'd had their Exxon Valdez compensation slashed. It was a huge issue in Alaska.

Yet when asked to name a Supreme Court decision she disagreed with, she couldn't think of any. It's because she never actually gave a damn. The Valdez thing never really penetrated her consciousness, except as: "remember to act sympathetic at the press conference". That done, and her flank covered, she forgot all about it.

She still hasn't grasped the idea that as VP she might need to actually understand, say, Pakistan. She just needs to crib enough notes to get through an interview, so she can get elected. That's the whole deal to her, and to McCain it seems.
