Beck, Palin, Sharpton to party on the Mall
Our Readers Who Comment are throwing barbs at each other and the media as they contemplate the Glenn Beck rally to "restore honor to America," coming to the Mall Saturday on the same date that Martin Luther King Jr. made his extraordinary "I have a dream" speech.
Fox News and talk radio host Beck is organizing the rally and Sarah Palin will be there too. Readers have filed more than 450 comments, praising or damning each other's views and wondering what, if anything, Al Sharpton's nearby rally will produce. There are a number of predictions that the "leftist media" will report a much smaller number of attendees than actually appear. All in all it should be a great day to avoid the Mall.
As Amy Gardner writes, "...with just a few days before the Beck rally, basic questions linger, including how big it will be and whether the event, which Beck says is nonpolitical, will help or hurt Republicans in November. Also unanswered is whether Beck can pull off the connection to King without creating offense - or confrontation with another event the same day led by the Rev. Al Sharpton."
chilled was the first to comment and wrote, "Thank you, Mr. Beck for planning a civilized, polite and meaningful event in our nation's capital. I can't make it but will be there with you in spirit. I know you will be hit with many hateful comments from the leftists, but as you always do, you will turn the other cheek."
But thehamptons1 said, "I'm not sure the Beck event will necessarily show anything about the strength or weakness of the Tea Party movement. I think the strength of the Tea party has already been shown in some recent governor and primary elections... How many people can afford to go to Washington for an event like Beck's? For every ten that goes there's probably 50 that would like to go."
thelaw1 wrote, "Martin Luther King would be disappointed by all the liberal race baiters. He would not want to see any one spend so much effort dividing the nation by race, like today's Democrats and other extreme liberals are doing... Martin Luther King preached peace and tolerance. Opposition to Beck's rally is preaching hatred and division. The really funny thing is that the radical liberals fear conservatives more than our enemies. How did we get so far from the destination that King was trying to go?"
John648 said, "The speech delivered by MLK was historic. What Beck will deliver will be histrionic."
FauxReal wrote, "Glenn Beck is going to honor Dr King as a hero? Dr King stands for everything Glenn Beck hates. Let's take social justice..."
eezmamata asked, "The best liberal 'enemy' glenn beck could muster is Al Sharpton? I'll bet Beck is a little cheesed off at that. It's like, none of the liberals care or something, like a coal in his stocking. Where's the liberal outrage he so desperately needs?"
RedBear57 wrote, "God Bless the Tea Party for splintering the right. I hope they run candidates in every race."
On the one hand, Illinois4 said, "There is at least two things we can be absolutely certain about during the aftermath of the weekend rally. The Washington Post will go to almost any extreme to minimize the number of attendees and maximize their mischaracterization of what was said and accomplished..."
On the other hand, azjimn2son predicted that "If fifty people show up Fox News will still say it was 2 million."
anOPINIONATEDsob wrote, "From a dream to a nightmare as the morons gather to proclaim how much they love America while actively attempting to destroy the country with scantily disguised sedition and outright treasonous actions. No matter how bad Obama ends up doing, at least he is attempting to right a sinking ship whose hull was riddled with holes that have now resulted in the abandon ship command to be given."
janye1 said, "I didn't realize that the Honor of America needs to be 'restored.' "
Koom wrote, "Anyone getting their information and education in regards to politics , the Constitution , the Bill of rights and our founding fathers from Beck must have a brain the size of a pea , they should do themselves , their family and their country a favor and not vote . Beck is an enemy of the country , he's a totally destructive fountain of BS getting rich off the ignorant people in this country ."
agrossman1 wrote, "Of course Beck picked this day to hold his rally. It is a slap in the face to all people of good conscience and concern for humanity. Beck is the slickest of racist bigots. He would be funny except that some people pay attantion to him..."
MidwaySailor76 said, "I suspect a large part of "restoring honor" to America will include demonizing the left, despite the laughable claim that the rally will be 'non-political.' Not that we need to worry. I could be wrong, but I believe the Tea Party has a very specific shelf life, and its angry base will lose steam when there is a white president again."
We'll close with tarryh, who wrote, "I hope Mr. Beck has a good show and makes lotsa money. Break a leg for the holy spirit, Glenn."
