Why is Metro single-tracking through four stops when they have the ability to switch tracks in the middle at Reagan Airport?

Any idea why the red line to Shady Grove was backed up this morning? My train sat at NY Avenue for abotu 10 minutes and all they'd say was "Central told us to hold here until further notice." Nothing on the web site, but this made me later than I was already running (and they want to charge me more money for this delight starting next week?!). Ergh.
