7 A.M. UPDATE:
The New York Avenue lanes have reopened.
ORIGINAL POST:
WASA spokesman Alan R. Haymann said the road was expected to reopen by 5:30 a.m. The pipe was repaired about 1:30 a.m.
"It's a big hole," Haymann said.
Usually, the road would be covered by a steel plate, Haymann said. But the New York Avenue hole, about 25 feet long, needed to be repaired with asphalt.
Motorists can take an alternate route along Rhode Island Avenue.
The disruption created major backups throughout the day Wednesday.
