Standstill at 14th & U

Police and fire trucks have blocked off U Street in NW between 13th and 14th streets due to a hit and run accident at 14th Street, and traffic has ground to a halt near the major intersection on the 14th Street commuting corridor.

Traffic is being diverted to 13th, 15th or 16th streets northbound and 13th or 16th streets southbound.

Probably will end up being more than just a hit-and-run on this individual's record. A Hyundai SUV sped down U St. swerving to avoid cars before flying through a red light and plowing head-on into an SUV at 14th and U St. NW. The driver of the Hyundai bolted from the vehicle as police cars swarmed to the scene. The driver and a police officer on foot collided at the NE corner of the intersection, but the driver ran off into an alleyway on U St.
