Metro asks for probe on sleeping driver

MetroAccess service to be scaled back

2:20 p.m. Update: Metro has asked MV Transportation, the contractor that oversees the 1,500 drivers in the MetroAccess system, to investigate whether the driver was on a break or was engaged in improper behavior, according to Metro spokesman Steven Taubenkibel.

MetroAccess provides about 7,700 trips a day for people with disabilities who are unable to use regular bus and rail service.

Original post: We received an e-mail with this video on Sunday. The vehicle pictured is a MetroAccess vehicle. MetroAccess is a transportation service for the disabled and it is operated by a contractor. The drivers are subcontractors and are not Metro employees.

Check back with The Post for more details.

Could it be that he was on his lunch break? Or, waiting for someone he just took to pick up a patron he took to a doctors appointment since he is a metroaccess driver?

I guess the cameraman/chump would rather this "METRO ACCESS" employee would be sleeping behind the wheel and hitting innocent people instead of cathing a few zzzzzzz. And how did he know that the air was on in the car? Don't remember him opening the door. I swear everyone has a cell phone or soem type of device that records. It really would been nice if the guy inside the car caught this creep and beat him while he taped on his own camera.

I regularly see a Metro Access van parked on my street with the driver asleep inside, van and a/c running. I've tried calling Metro to report this, but have gotten nowhere and didn't want to waste anymore time on it. Typically, this does not occur during a lunch hour.

You can tell the A/C is running because you can hear it cycle on and off and you see the condensation drips beneath the van. Plus the windows are rolled up and sometimes it's 90+.

What Gentrifiers can do with a camera.....This is wrong on so many fronts..

1. Not a METRO employee. Contractor.
2. Sometimes METRO Access has to wait to pick up the next person. It's been in the FREAKIN 90s ALL FREAKIN MONTH. Ofcourse he's gonna have on the A/C idiots.
3. Can we have the camera on you for your whole time at work to make sure you aren't checking your bank statements, Facebook, or reading the Post online??

Gentrifiers are the worst I tell you.....

So since you think you know everything. Can you tell me if this worker was at lunch or on a call? If he was at lunch he has every right to go to sleep " thats his time". Dose anyone tell you what to do? You really don't know what this worker was doing? And for your information no i'm NOT a Metro worker or Contractor. Are you? And if i feel like i want to read the post then thats what i'm going to do " JUST LIKE YOU". And if I'm at lunch i'm going to sit in my car with my windows up WITH THE AIR ON AND GO TO SLEEP. And if you want to take a picture of that I will let you use my phone.

Hope this gets investigated. there is a big difference between catching a few ZZZ's on your lunch break and sleeping on the job. Sure hope the driver is not sleeping off a hangover, and hopefully nobody was injured or put at risk.

No excuse letting the car run, burning gas (which METRO pays for), and pollution the atmosphere.

Don't be so quick to jump to negative conclusions. Metro Access drivers get paid based on the number of runs they make along with hours worked. Their shift can start in the wee hours of the morning, as early as 4:30 a.m. so they don't have a typical lunch time hour. Making a measly $13 per hour, don't begrudge them taking a nap if they are "waiting around" for the next fare to be called in. Many times their day is spent waiting...

Would you want someone to video tape you at your job? Never mind because you're probably a stripper. And yes I work for METRO, I'm writing this comment while I'm behind the wheel of the F U route.

A lot of people get confused by MetroAcess and the rest of Metro. MetroAcess drivers do not have a 'home' garage to go to when they are not picking up and transporting passengers. When they have dropped off a passenger they call in for the location of the next passenger they have to pick up. If there is a passenger nearby who is to be picked up a few minutes later the driver might be instructed to go there and wait.
If you saw a cab driver sleeping in his cab would you call him lazy? I know a driver who drives for MetroAcess and he says he hopes for a trip where he can take a break waiting for his passenger. Most of the time after he drops off a passenger he is sent to pick up someone else, sometimes two people who are going ion the same general direction.
