At the intersection of 11th St. and Pennyslvania Ave. WMATA buses must turn left and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. Today Monday July 12, 2010 a WMATA bus driver FAILED to yield to pedestrians. Three pedestrians waited at the crosswalk for the walk signal, myself, and two women who were pushing large baby strollers filled with children for a local day care center. The bus driver accelerated to the maximum capability as the light turned green and continued to accelerate as he turned left without yielding to the pedestrians. None of us were able to reach the center of Pennsylvania avenue as he sped by behind us. I was in the lead and the two women with the baby strollers filled with children were behind me. Neither of them were much past the first southernmost right lane of Pennsylvania avenue as the bus driver sped by behind them. This is UNACCEPTABLE behavior on the part of the bus driver. He should be FIRED immediately. I demand that Metro supervisors observe this corner because Metro drivers at this intersection are continually failing to yield to pedestrians. There WILL be MORE fatalities at this intesection by WMATA bus drivers in the future. I demand that METRO contact me to tell me what actions they HAVE taken in regard to this behavior by WMATA drivers. I will forward a copy of this email to Dr. Gridlock also so this issue will not go away. It is clear that there is a culture of failure to yield to pedestrians at WMATA and that WMATA is not taking any actions to retrain bus drivers or protect public safety. This is an outrage. People will die.
