MLK Hwy reopens at US 50

Mark Berman

11:40 A.M. UPDATE: State officials say all lanes have reopened.

11 A.M. UPDATE: State officials say the lanes are still closed.

10:30 A.M. UPDATE: The westbound lanes remain closed, according to Maryland highway officials.

9 A.M. UPDATE: Authorities say emergency officials have confirmed the death of one person at the scene of the accident on MLK Highway. The closure may last for hours while officials investigate.

According to spokesman Mark E. Brady, firefighters and paramedics responded to a vehicle crash about 8 a.m. and found an overturned vehicle fully engulfed in flames. After the fire was extinguished, one deceased person was discovered inside. No information is currently available on the victim, Brady said.

8:40 A.M. UPDATE:

-- The accident is blocking westbound Route 704/Martin Luther King Jr. Highway at U.S. 50. Eastbound lanes remain open.

For any drivers who need to head west (towards the Beltway and the District), some alternate routes: Take Annapolis Road (to the north of U.S. 50) or Landover Road (to the south of U.S. 50). Both of those routes hit the Beltway, if that's where you're going. Landover Road also reconnects with U.S. 50 and Route 704; on Annapolis Road, you'd need to take Veterans Parkway south to reconnect with U.S. 50.

8:20 A.M. UPDATE:

-- A fatal accident on Route 704/Martin Luther King Jr. Highway at U.S. 50 is slowing down traffic on the roadway (via the Prince George's Fire/EMS Department). This is just east of the Beltway. U.S 50 East is already backed up badly beyond that point, reports the Post's Michael Bolden.

7:50 A.M. UPDATE:

-- The accident on I-95 South at Pennsylvania Avenue has been cleared.

-- Backups are still sizable on I-95 South at Telegraph Road and I-66 East at the Beltway.

7:30 A.M. UPDATE:

-- Another Beltway accident, this time in Maryland. A collision on I-95 South at Pennsylvania Avenue is only blocking the shoulder, but it could cause congestion.

-- The accident on I-95 South/the Beltway at Telegraph Road is still blocking the south right shoulder and causing backups.

-- I-66 East is very backed up leading to the Beltway.

7:05 A.M. UPDATE:

-- An accident on I-95 South/the Beltway at Telegraph Road could cause delays. The south right shoulder is blocked, and there are mild backups already.

-- I-395 North is jammed up at Seminary Road.

-- I-495 North continues to be sluggish near Gallows Road.

6:40 A.M. UPDATE:

-- The I-95 North exit ramp remains blocked at exit 161 (before Lorton).

-- I-495 North is starting to get backed up at Gallows Road.

6:10 A.M. UPDATE:

I-95 North drivers in Virginia, take note: A disabled vehicle is blocking the northbound exit ramp before Lorton (exit 161), so there could be delays as traffic begins to build this morning.

ORIGINAL POST:

Good morning, commuters! It's a quite one so far, but we're keeping tabs on the roads to see what might cause you consternation as you head out today. Keep checking back throughout the morning and we'll keep you posted on all of the biggest headaches out there. A pair of tips:

-- DC Water crews are working on a broken 8 inch water main on Michigan Avenue in Northeast between 12th Street and 13th Place. While people in the area might have a disruption in water service until the repairs are finished (they estimate they'll be done at 9 a.m.), there is not supposed to be any traffic impact. So if you know about the broken water main or see the crews, don't expect any road closures.

-- A reminder of the new 14th Street traffic pattern that went into effect this week. A barrier is blocking the center-left side of the southern half of the bridge. Before you get to the barrier, stay to the left for 14th Street and stay to the right for I-395.

-- Things have hopefully quieted down, but if you heard a loud buzzing overnight and were concerned, it was just a Norad exercise.
